After using Arai's top signature models for 20 + years (and getting sick of the poor quality and high price) I tried the HJC RPHA 10 and have been using it for a few years now. Really happy with this helmet. Better than any Arai I have ever owned. Stoked to try out the new RPHA-11 Awesome! You should see the RPHA 11 Pro... improvement just about everywhere! They removed the Snell rating and stuck with ECE only so the helmet is crazy lightweight now.

I am the HJC and Shoei rep for Mn, Iowa, and the Dakota's so I'm biased I raced in a Shoei X-Fourteen this Summer but commute in a Shoei GT-Air normally. I also tried the new HJC RPHA 11 Pro and love the helmet.. it's not quiet at all (I wear earplugs) but it's crazy light and very well vented. The crazy thing is that while the X-Fourteen and GT Air feel heavier in the hand they feel about the same weight on the head. This is due to the fact that Shoei spends so much time wind-tunnel testing their shells.. they really do nail the aerodynamics!

Arai RX7 Edward Colin (retired by age)
Shoei RF-1000 solid yellow (retired by age)
Arai Corsair RX7 Tommy Gun, high definition orange shade for cloudy day rides (present)
Shoei RF-1200 solid white dark smoke shade for sunny day rides (present)
Have had great experience with both brands. Great construction, quality, fit and finish.
Also, experienced once a broken side cover with the Arai and service experience was superb.
Like very much the Shoei RF, since its very light and quiet with good ventilation.

I have several because I seem to never get rid of them, and I rarely find one that I love.. My all time favorite is an Arai XD-C that I bought from Mr. Arai at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show in 2005. Last year I replaced the entire padding, added new vents and side plates. It worked great on the BMW, but the beak will be a literal pain in the neck on the FZ.
My Icon Alliance Dark will be the standard for now.

I wear an HJC RPHA-10 in the Lorenzo graffiti livery, good helmet. Not particularly cheap at $500 but quality is certainly as good as Arai or Shoei.

Cool helmet. HJC has come a long way over the years. I've always liked them, but they used to be heavier than most. Their latest mid priced helmets are really nice.

I have a Nexx X-T1 with internal visor. Good, relatively small, light weight helmet. The rubberized exterior always looks nice and doesn't scratch up like some of the glossy ones.

That helmet is awesome! I just got the Ghost Carbon version of that from my brother tonight and it seems like a great design! I'll get to try it out in a few days.

My Icon Alliance Dark will be the standard for now. 2005 is a bit past the 5 year expiration. They really do get brittle over time. This is a common understanding, but not what most people think it is. Fiber reinforced plastics (FRP or "composite") is extremely strong and has a very long life. I work on composite aircraft parts that were built in the 70's and 80's. This material holds up very well. These are the same composites used in higher end helmets. The dangerous conditions for these materials is UV radiation (protected by paint), excessive heat, and drops that might cause micro cracks in the resin. The helmet components that become brittle and less effective are the styrofoam-type inner shock shell. The trick to protecting these areas is to always store helmets in climate controlled areas with no extremes in humidity. Being that I rotate several helmets, I often have 5-year-old helmets that look new.
