The issue is most tanks are a lot wider at the top than at the bottom, and the cheap-a$$ manufacturers just put a straight gauge, meaning when gauge is at half the tank's height it shows half on the gauge, but it has a lot less than that. Like many, my strategy is to use the trip-meter as a general gauge. Thanks for that info, I (obviously) didn't know that. I've used the trip odometer for years, but always observed how useless the gauge tends to be on my bike.

I've used the trip odometer for years, but always observed how useless the gauge tends to be on my bike. I don't think the MT-10 tank is like that as I get 8.5-9 litres in if I fill up as it ticks over half way, and the right fuel goes in at each bar consumed after that. I think the problem is more that the fuel gauges work like this: 100-50% = first bar 50-33% = second bar 33-17% = third bar 0-17% = low fuel bar So as you can see the first half makes sense, disappearing once you consume half of your fuel. The illusion of fuel reserves being spent too quickly after that comes from a combination of having more granularity and each bar disappearing after ~16% of fuel usage instead of 50%, and that the last bar is actually the reserve so you only get 33% of fuel consumption before the low fuel light comes on. This is more a human perception problem than an inaccurate fuel gauge problem.

Just hit a personal best. 5.7 L/100kms! (42.3 US MPG). It was a 2 hour leisure ride after I installed my Hindle exhaust. Kept it around 90 km/h (55mph).
That's hand calculated too! That tank would have hit around 300 kms (186 miles) before it ran dry.

You have just about 1 gal left in the tank when the Trip meter starts.....plan your fuel stop accordingly. If you went 34.6 miles on reserve you were within a mile or two of running out. It is never a good idea to run the tank dry as the fuel pump needs to be submerged in fuel to keep it cool. If you run all the fuel out you can burn it out.

I dont know if this thread is dead or not. But ill post anyway.
Im just wondering if your mpg are the real time one or over time one. Because my L/100km is 5.4. If i google that in mpgs it said 43.5 mpgs. I live in Sweden though, so its a mild climate. Rarely over 30 °C which might help with
the mpgs. This is longer trips though and never take any busy streets in a city wich helps alot. Bike is stock aswell, just a akrapovic slipon. Is there anyone here getting close to this mpg?

My best was 5.5 L/100 kms. I usually just go out on country roads and take it easy, usually just 10-15 km/h over the speed limit. On those trips I see 5.5-6 L/100 kms on average. I could get 300kms to a full tank if I needed to

Might be able to squeez 300 km out but i dont want to run out of fuel. I do the same riding as you. At the moment im a learnerdriver aswell, got the a2 license not the A. So fuel consumption might go up once my father isnt riding along!

That's how I figured 300 kms if I really stretched it lol

It's currently late aug '22 and I'm paying $4.85 gal for premium for the big girl. That makes a day of "spirited" riding a little more than $10 a day. I could blow thru $40-50 no problem. I have a '21 mt09 also, almost new and stock. Just picked up that'18 mt10 for a screaming deal and put in enough miles now to know what a pig it is. Tough choice on which one I'm going to start building and keep. MT10 is cheap to get crazy hp, just a link pipe decat and flash and there you have it. Gonna be a tough call because they're both great bike but the cp4 has addicted me!

IME Hooligan riding is 30 mpg. A balanced riding session is 33-35mpg. Being cool is 38 mpg if you can keep it at around 4.5-5k rpm. This is on a decat/flashed bike. It’s better mpg if stock.

The FZ-10's fuel efficiency is pretty poor, but you don't buy a machine like this for fuel economy. If that is important to you then you can always buy a scooter, Yamaha makes the cute Vino Classic (50 cc) which gets 127 mpg, and it will save you $10,700 vs the FZ-10 to boot. Seriously, the only real hassle with the relatively poor fuel economy is the range, but that is manageable. My outings are usually 140 miles or so and that makes the fuel cost about $10 for the day. But considering the joy it gives that is pretty darn cheap entertainment. I just bought a '18 mt10 that was almost new. Ran about 6 tanks through it stock and got a low of 28 and a high of 32. I did a cat delete link pipe and flash and just filled it under the new conditions:25mpg. That's out screwing off getting on it reasonably hard at times like we all do. That fill up just cost me $20 so price of admission has gone up a little. I live in liberal Washington state, we have the second highest gas tax in the nation next to California. My '03 Honda Accord will get like 31mpg cruising at 80mph with the a/c on the highway for comparison. Yeah, you don't buy a mt10 for the fuel economy, it HAS to be one of the worst!

Money ain’t sheeeeeeert for the amount of grinning I get with this fun machine. Worth every penny IMO. It’s meant to pull wheelies and go faster than posted speed limits.

I dropped a tooth on the rear sprocket and went to a 520 chain. It got me about 3-4 mpg.

We rode to Gold Beach for lunch! There is an awesome Thai restaurant there! Rode over and back. So happy with the new Fuel range on the MT-10. I am going to strap a fuel can on the back and go until she stops! Then get a good idea of my range! Still over 170 is great!

When I'm really hammering it which is most of the time, I get about 25. 30 possible but absolutely no way 35-40mpg. Guys that say they're getting that much are either lying of they're ridding it like grandma.I've got a new gen '21 mt09 that I can ride really hard and still get 35. Get 40-45 on the mt09 just going with the flow. At $5+ gal for premium up here in Washington state it does add up but what a sweet engine. Actually the engines in both bikes are brilliant. Mt09 is still bone stock so the will go down just slightly after it gets an exhaust and flash.
