I wonder if anyone has this same issue or phenomenon as I do. Around town the MPG is in the 20's or even lower but on the highway around 6k RPM in 6th gear going 75-90 MPH my MPG gauge bounces from 42-50. Sometimes it even briefly shows 99.9, 65, and some other crazy numbers but then goes back to the 42-50. Is my gauge malfunctioning or could I really be getting that great of MPG? (no the 99 or 65 obviously)

Live mpg can fluctuate quite a bit. If you're coasting downhill you can get really high instantaneous mpg. You are getting around 65mpg at that moment but as soon as you roll back on the throttle it goes down. In the end the highs and lows are averaged for the avg mpg display.
IMO it's only useful to read live mpg at constant speed and constant throttle. You can figure at X speed on flat ground you get Y mpg. It can also be fun to hammer on it and see how low you can get it.

I have found my last three sport rides have yielded pretty poor mileage. My fuel light comes on at about 90 miles my last three rides. Granted, I am womping on it pretty hard, and I am no slim chicken. At 6'4" and 270 pounds, ripping around the Paso Robles back roads, I get about 90 miles and then I need fuel.
I replaced my '09 R1 with the FZ and have not had a single regret.
Wish list: Larger fuel tank. However, I can happily live with what I have got.
Wouldn't mind putting an R1 engine in the FZ, though. I miss shifting out of 1st at over 100 mph.

Dunno if this thread is still alive or not but I was pretty surprised how much the Mt likes to drink, she's basically an alcoholic. That being said I went on a long ride a few days ago, was about 400kms. My first fill up since the start of the ride was at 190kms and at that stage I had already been on reserve for a bit, filled up and 14.6litres went in (17 litre tank). This was a mixture of 2nd and 3rd gear mountain roads and open roads where I did quite a few open throttle pulls. Bike is still in break in and hasn't had the first service but everyone's sais fuel economy gets a bit better as it breaks in. Will see after the first service.

I've been tracking my mileage ever since I bought my FZ-10 last summer, and I only get about 25 mpg in STD mode. I track real-world mpg using a fuel tracker app and actual numbers from my receipt at the pumps. I love everything about this bike except the frequent trips to the gas station and the premium fuel requirement...especially here in Canada where premium gas is about $1.7/litre ($6.44/US gallon) in Canadian pesos. I get to about 150-160 km (93-100 miles) before the reserve light stars flashing...pretty bad.

Crazy. Mine is showing 38-40 when traveling 70ish on the highway. Went 115 miles and put about 3 gallons back in. That was on a straight highway ride though. Anything slower and it drinks the fuel.

Yep. I just did 1500mi in 5 days and the fuel economy was best from 55 to 70ish for me. My avg is now something like 34.5 mpg, but being back in the suburbs will destroy that.

One thing that still makes me laugh out loud is when the ECO light goes on when riding. I as well didn't buy this bike worrying about MPG but do think it's funny to even bother with that on the display. It's kind of like having a light that should say Current gas consumption: "Best you can hope for" or "Down right terrible".

(38mpg) I ride country roads and usually keep the speed around 90km/h. I've only filled up 3 times, but it's been consistent at 6.2. My first tank was on track to get to 260kms if I let it run dry. I filled up after 221kms, and put in 13.8 liters

As I am about to take a 3k mile trip on my 17 FZ10 i figured i would see what others were getting for MPG or KPG. weird it is so spread out " going to turn key now have never checked the avg indicator "
currently 4,673 miles on the clock factory tire's for a few day's yet. Ave indicator say's 31.7 not sure if that's based off trip 1 count or not though. as Trip 1 I reset every time i fill up. Best miles per tank 138 the light came on while riding upright. Worst 62 miles never got over 4th carving corners that day.
25-30 mph in 3rd I get 30-32 mpg on indicator 45-50 mph in 5th I get 30-34 mpg on indicator 60-65 mph in 6th I get 32-36 mpg on indicator ( head on tank elbows in I got it to hold 37 mpg on level road for a mile ) ( had to test it lol ) 75-80 mph in 6th I get 32-34 mpg on indicator ( arm on the tank I noticed it goes to 34-38 mpg )
that being said town hopping little shenanigans between I average 110 miles to the light and at next station seems to take 3.8-4.1 gallons of fuel.
factory mapping yet no secondary fuel management system but some work done to intake and exhaust flow rate.

I think that's roughly 160 miles

Some encouraging figures here. He he. Another big difference is altitude; at my 4K', shouldn't have trouble getting a safe 140 miles, which would be fine. I was disappointed at 100/120, but 140/150 should be safe enough to buy this bike .

I recently did a 400 mile trip and my bike seemed to click over to a half a tank at the 80 to 90 mile mark. This was with me being very conservative on the throttle. My bike has the 2wheeldynoworks flash and hindle 3/4 exhaust. Cant tell you how far I could have went on the whole tank because we were stopping every 100 miles for fuel and a break. Now when I start riding more aggressively this all changes. My low fuel light usually starts flashing at a 100 to 110 miles.

I recently did a 400 mile trip and my bike seemed to click over to a half a tank at the 80 to 90 mile mark... For all the bikes I've owned, as far as what the gauge indicates, it seemed like that first half-tank lasted a really long time, and then the 2nd half drops quickly. I think the FZ-10's gauge is pretty awful in this regard. My 600RR's gauge had 8 bars when full; I'd be at 4 bars left by the time I hit about 80 miles and then at about 130 miles by the time the bottom bar would start flashing. On the FZ-10, the 4 total bars are a bit pointless. I rolled into work this morning with about 87 miles on my tank and the gauge shows a half-tank. I have a 28 mile commute home and that bottom bar will be flashing by the time I hit 105-107. So I'm supposed to believe I burned through approximately a half tank of gas in 17-20 miles; just doesn't make sense to me. A little more granularity in the fuel gauge would've been nice. On this bike, I learned pretty quick to just keep an eye on the mileage and not the gas gauge.

The fuel gauge on these bikes is schizophrenic and pretty worthless. I just keep an eye on the trip meter and when it gets to around 100-110 I know I will be hitting reserve in about 10 minutes and time to start looking for a gas station. No big deal for me, but I would like to know the reasoning why the gauge was made to not move until half the tank is empty. The prior FZ1 had six bars and they dropped pretty consistently as the fuel was used, why our system is the way it is is one of the sweet mysteries of life.

The issue is most tanks are a lot wider at the top than at the bottom, and the cheap-a$$ manufacturers just put a straight gauge, meaning when gauge is at half the tank's height it shows half on the gauge, but it has a lot less than that. Like many, my strategy is to use the trip-meter as a general gauge.
