Hello all,
Just joined after searching the web for others with FZ/MT-10's with blown motors....
Me: 2017 MT-10, 5000 miles.
Last night, cruising on the freeway with my group (60-75mph) I feel a quick change in the motor sound/harmonics and then massive vibration and my oil light comes on. Was able to get her off to the side of the road, shut down leave the key in "on" so the fans stayed on an gave her a minute to cool off. I remember the temp was at 175 when I shut her off. Started her up and of course heard stuff clattering around in the motor so shut her down and called a tow.
Just that morning I had her serviced at the dealer, oil change (Yamalube synthetic etc) everything went over. So of course I am thinking oil drain plug missing or any number of things a service tech could forget. Checking the oil in the side of the road the spyglass showed her full of clean oil, no burnt smells etc. No oil leaking on the ground etc.
I will be calling the place where I had it serviced to see what they say and then calling the dealer. I am still under warranty. Only mods are an exhaust and some turn signals etc but no tune or motor mods etc...
I'll update the forums here as I hear more.
Ride safe-

That is distressing, this is the second motor to fail in the last week on this forum. Keep us posted on the diagnosis. And welcome.

Damn, that's 2 on here in the last few weeks.
I'm confused. You say you had it serviced at the dealer, then you say you're going to call where you had it serviced at then calling the dealer?

I bought it from a particular Yamaha dealer (wont name them here) but their service dept is a mess, so I had it serviced at another Yamaha dealer with service dept that has it's ducks in a bit more of a row. That's who is am calling (the better dealers service dept).

It's good that you had it serviced at a dealer using OEM parts. There should be zero issues with them covering the repairs under warranty.

Geez, two now? The other is an '18. This one a '17, so even worse, since ALL could be affected. Anyway, what's the build date on yours? Hopefully a very early build, for some piece of mind for the rest of us . Keep us posted what happened. But yes, when something like this happens right after a dealer visit, you can't help it but to be skeptical. Good luck.

Well, that totally blows. Very sorry you are having to deal with that! That certainly takes all the fun out of the experience. So glad you were able to get it pulled over.
So, I wonder if there are more instances of engine failure out there? If it’s happened twice in the past couple weeks to members on this board with low-mileage machines, there are likely a couple other cases too.
It will be nice to know what Yamaha discovers.

Got it towed over to the dealer. Head mechanic said he's going to call Yamaha and advise them of the issue and ask for their guidance first and then begin to dig into the motor. Will report more as I hear.

keep us posted on what you hear. This is why I like to do all my own services -- who knows what they could have messed up without telling you or even potentially knowing. best of luck. if you had it serviced at a dealer it should be good, but i wonder if they'll give you flak for servicing at 5k miles instead of 4k (unless you're in europe).

I’m with you on that one achrista. Sorry to hear about your motor sortasapien. I’m glad to hear you were able to get off of the road safely. I’m interested in knowing the manufacturing date as well. Hopefully your dealer can get you back up and running again before too long.

Ditto, no one touches my shit. I keep records and receipts of all my oil services on my bikes. My FZ is out of warranty so it's more for re-selling purposes but my new bike (tracer 900 gt ) if something goes wrong I have them for that warranty. Literally just finished servicing all 3 of my bikes 10 minutes ago too! However, I honestly doubt there is anything they could have done to cause a catastrophic failure of the engine. The only thing that comes to mind is if he drained the oil, forgot to fill it, ran it without oil for a minute or so, caught his mistake, filled it and sent it. That's plausible, but how can you prove it?

Forgot to comment on the DIY subject. NOBODY touches my vehicles unless I absolutely have no choice (which is rarely). In fact, just did my own recall on my new F-150, which consisted of covering with aluminum tape the carpet filler (in the middle of the carpet) below the seatbelt tensioner, to prevent a fire when it goes off. Watched the Ford video, and did it much better, with zero scratches, scuffs, broken tabs, new rattles, time lost, etc. Also eliminated 2 pesky rattles after carefully checking for loose stuff under there. And that's exactly what I like the most of doing my own DIY: I check and clean everything around, and I know for a fact if something happens it wasn't due to negligence, like wrong oil, too much oil, forgetting to put oil initially, too much torque on drain plug/filter, bike dropped, etc.

Based on you saying the engine restarted and the fact you had a oil change in the morning, wondering if your oil filter failed.
Of course the bad news would be the engine would need to be torn down to remove all the debris.
Hopefully Yamaha will fix it right or send a new engine. Good Luck!

Sorry to hear this and don't want to jack the thread, but do you guys think Yami would not cover this if the OP had a pipe and ECU flash? My bike's one year warranty runs out in Feb, and I may buy the 4 year YES based on these 2 motors poping, but don't want to waste it if not covered. I guess I could also put the stock pipe back on and flash the bike to stock if I had an issue...

I guess I could also put the stock pipe back on and flash the bike to stock if I had an issue... They have to comply with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (US only). Essentially, unless a consumer alteration or specific use of a product actually caused the failure they can't deny your claim. So if you use a different brand of oil that complies with the manufacturer's spec you are covered if you have a failure. But if you race your bike that is outside of its intended purpose, they would deny you. A simple slip-on exhaust that didn't touch the catalytic converter or ECU would most likely be ok, a 3/4 system with cat/EXUP valve delete would be more problematic, and a flash would certainly be questioned although one could argue that it didn't actually cause the failure, but then you are fighting with a company that has more funds than the typical buyer. Good luck with that. Most people realize that once you flash the ECU your warranty on the engine/transmission is null and void. If you can't accept that then don't do the mods. I'm not sure how sophisticated the ECU's are in our bikes but car ECU's leave a tell tale trail if it has been monkeyed around with so you just can't set it back to stock and roll the car in and say 'it's stock, it failed, fix it'.
I have the Y.E.S extended warranty but I didn't buy it thinking about the engine blowing up, I was more concerned with the electronics failing long term (ECU, cruise, ABS, etc). If you go that route buy it online (eBay) from an authorized Yamaha dealer, will be cheaper than if you just roll into your local dealer and want to buy it. Simple purchase and you get the credentials direct from Yamaha. www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Yamaha-4-year-extended-warranty-motorcycles-YES/250462210568?hash=item3a50b60a08:g:uG8AAOxyM1VRY5td:rk:10:pf:0

An ECU flash is actually a federal offense, but we all know that doesn't get enforced. However, if you have any engine issue with or having had a tune, good luck convincing a jury that messing with the ECU had nothing to do with that. Another fact: Messing with the ECU is irreversible. Yes, you can flash it back, but Yamaha corporate would know right away the electronic seal was broken before authorizing engine warranty work (same with cars). Notice I didn't say dealers, because they can't typically detect tampering, but manufacturers always ask to download the ECU before authorizing any warranty work, and that's where it shows. Finally, Magnuson-Moss is waaaay overhyped. Nobody is going to fight for you there. You'd have to hire your own lawyer, fight the manufacturer, and unless you win, you'd be all of that money out. That's why it's stupid to me to mess with the ECU while under warranty. In addition, messing wih the cats is also a federal offense, so I'd bet my house no jury would ever award anything to people messing with them. Like Evitzee said, mess with them only if you're willing to pay out of pocket if your engine fails. MM would only help if you have a mechanically stock bike, have all maintenance done by the book and documented, have the money to pay a lawyer initially (*), and you honestly weren't negligent for the failure... but it'd be unlikely any manufacturer would fight you with those conditions in the first place. But if they do, you'd probably win and recover everything. I put an astherisk because some lawyers would not charge you unless they win, but no good lawyer would take your case unless all of those conditions are met. The bad news is if you win, without having paid their fees, they'd keep almost everything. Much easier to just deal with the manufacturer, but need to meet their conditions first. To me, that is a no-brainer, especially now, that we know of TWO bikes which blew their engines. I might also buy an extended warranty. Need to look into that.

Thanks, well, I guess I'll save the $ and pass on the extended warranty...

Quick update, spoke to the dealer, they called Yamaha who gave them the go ahead to start tearing into the bike. Will advise.
In the meantime, just bought a BMW S1000RR. 130 on the BMW feels like 85 on the MT. Gotta love that wind!
