Gents, I'm back on the fence about trading my 2019 KTM 1290 Superduke R - for an MT-10 SP (or non-SP). Prefer the colors of the SP, but a local dealer has a Raven Black for $11,898 + tax/reg. The SP I am looking at is 2023 model for $18,748 OTD. Just wondering how everyone is enjoying their FZ / MT-10s over the past few years? From Oct 2021.. fz10.org/thread/4208/fence-2019-ktm-sdr-2021

2 year owner here MT-10, Non-sp. - I paid about 16.5k OTD. (Purchased in Rhode Island, registered in New Jersey) Besides my bike being in a shop for about 170 (non consecutive) days and having to contact a lemon lawyer -
It's actually been great. In terms of reliability, there was one issue which my local dealership failed to diagnose in a reasonable time.
I have 12k miles. I average about 36MPG. I left everything completely stock. No flashing, no exhaust, etc. I got the Yamaha luggage rack, top case, and a puig touring screen. I love it.
I have no regrets whatsoever. It's a ton of fun to rip baby power wheelies.
I don't like that a lot of diagnostics require Yamaha-specific tools/software, but that's just how things go nowadays.

I was going to buy a 23' super duke r until I talked with the KTM techs at work. They see a lot of issues with ktm street bikes, mostly electrical issues. The MT was my second choice and I can honestly say I have zero regrets in my decision. My otd price was a bit better than the above mentioned but I work for a powersports dealer. I have about 10,500 miles and they have been 100% problem free, just miles of smiles.I have done a few upgrades: bar end mirrors, asv shorty levers, Yamaha comfort seat, SP belly pan, Leo Vince' mid-pipe and slip on, and a 2 wheel dyno works reflash. I have spent more than 6 hours in the seat during a day of riding, minus the fuel stops. Been on multiple charity rides and regular rides for fun every weekend, weather permitting. I find the MT to be extremely versatile, it is decent for long rides, ripping through some twisties and the occasional stop light drag.
Not to get too personal but the bike has also improved my marriage, after 28 years and teenage twins, things were getting a bit stale. Ever since my wife's first ride, she's been hooked and now shares my passion for riding...mostly just on the MT though. She doesn't seem to have as much fun on my comuter/daily ride, Honda ST1300 aka "grandpa bike".

Appreciate the feedback. My 2019 SDR hasn't had any electrical issues, which I am thankful for. It does have a big of nagging behavior when things are disconnected.
For example- when I ride trackdays, I remove the fancy Rizoma turn signals, disconnect tail light etc. Even in track mode, the dash flashes messages and hazard signals every 10 to 30 seconds. It is in Track Mode and has to be the dumbest bit of logic built into the bike.. Minor gripe, but I even emailed KTM to see if they knew how to silence the alarms going off. No idea though.
So far things I've had go faulty on my 2019 with 10K miles on it:
-Front Brake switch (probably corrosion - have the part, need to install).
-Oil Temp Sensor/Filler neck (have the part- need to replace). Oil temp reads higher than ambient, low oil pressure alert on occasion.
-Taillight fell off the other day. There are two plastic mounting bosses that are known to get brittle and crack. I dremeled them down, used epoxy with two metal screws and made mounting studs with a 1/4" fuel hose for damper. Held for a few months but they eventually broke the other day and low and behold I had a dangling tail light as I entered the highway.
That's actually what reignited my interest in the MT-10 again. I have a replacement in the mail, but TBH, kind of pissed about the $250 spend on a bike that has never been dropped.
Got an approval for the full amount of the MT-10 SP with a good APR and waiting to hear what kind of wash I'm going to receive on the KTM trade-in. It's paid off and would be a better financial move to hang onto it. My logic is steering me towards the reduced maintenance cost of a Japanese bike (with good plastic qualities!), new bike, zero miles, 1yr warranty, and getting to play/test fancy new semi-active suspension.
Will update this thread with pics if I go through with the deal.

I've had my FZ-10 from new, purchased in October 2016. It only has about 17,500 miles on it but it has been rock solid with just minimal maintenance. Everything is still tight, no seeps or leaks of oil or coolant anywhere, just did its annual oil/filter change and gave it a good lookover while laying on the ground. The cruise control is acting up a little, though, about half the time it will just flash and not engage, then if I turn off the engine it will be ok. It might be due to the brake switch recall that I haven't had done yet, maybe next spring when I have a chance. In my experience it is very hard to beat the reliability of a Japanese motorcycle.

I have owned my 2018 SP for about 30,000km and 3 1/2 years(bought with 12000km, now has 42000km). One ride on a demo bike had me hooked, the CP4 engine is a unique gem. The only issue I have experienced was the brake microswitch corrosion which stopped the cruise control working and was fixed under recall. I had the bike reflashed and that was money very well spent, the stock MT is good but the flashed version is fabulous. I tried a Leovince midpipe to go with my Akra end can but it was too loud for my tastes and I refitted the stock cat. The sound from the Akra is deep and melow anyway. I really like the ride position, handling and brakes, but I am not completely sold on the semi-active front suspension which just seems a bit jolting on sharp bumps. I have the comfort seat, heated grips, mirror extenders and a small windscreen and will happily do 600km days. If you are a sport-touring sort of rider you can get around 17km/L on open and twisty roads but weirdly the fuel use increases at slower speeds. A bigger fuel tank would be nice but I can get 240km fairly easily. My bike is still on the original chain and sprockets and brake pads. It does have the Yamaha "tick" but has been unchanged since I got it; it is a feature, not a bug. It is also suprisingly gentle on tyres and my last Road6 lasted over 10,000km (the same tyre gets 6-8000km on my other bikes with similar use). I had an expert check the valve clearances at 40,000km (all just in spec) otherwise I do my own servicing. The MT is a very versatile bike that is excellent at all the things that I do with my bikes, and every ride brings smiles.

I have a '17 FZ10 with 12342 miles. I kept it stock for a few years as a commuter/track bike then decided to mod when I got my 1190 Adventure for commuting. 2WDW re-flash, Driven rear sets, Yosh 3/4, Pro Taper woods low bars, Motion Pro throttle tube. The re-flash made it a beast. I ride my 1190 so often because it's comfortable, has great wind protection, heated grips, etc. So now I find the FZ-10 a little too racy for street riding. I'm working towards making my FZ-10 a little more comfortable and considering sending my CPU back to 2WDW for a mellower, more streetable reflash. My suspension is set up for the track as well, so softening it up a bit for the street will help.
Reliability has been typical of Yamaha, no issues at all. IMHO the most reliable bike made. Yes, better than or at least equal to Honda. And I have owned several of both.
I owned an '07 KTM 990SD, ridden several different SD's over the years including the new 990SD. They are all great, I'm a big fan of KTM's. It comes down to personal preference.
In general terms, I find the Yamaha's a little more street worthy, user friendly and confidence inspiring. The KTM's are more "Race Ready" and rewarding when pushed at the track or hard street riding. Both are great choices, it's just up to what you prefer.

I've had my 2017 FZ-10 for almost 4 years now. It has 33,000 miles on it and I haven't had a problem. Its got a full tune and is making 160 to the wheel and it loves it.

2017 as well. All good here. I get on her quit a bit in the canyons and mountain roads. So far she's put up with all my shit.
Trying to be objective, there have been reports on here about engine failures but it remains to be seen if it's a thing or this falls in the natural statistics of a certain small percentage of everything with an engine is going to catastrophically fail for seemingly no reason.

I have a 2018 model for 3 years now ...done about 15000 miles including 3 trips to the Alps. Bike has been faultless and is super on the mountain passes and twisty roads. Upgraded the suspension with Maxton shock and fork conversion so it really handles well.
ECU has been flashed using Woolwich software so its smoother and stronger than stock.
Very underrated bike in my opinion especially after a few tweaks.

I have a 2019, all stock, with 46000 miles. 100% trouble free, just tires and normal service. Great bike, power, handling and it’s comfortable for long rides (comfort seat).

Appreciate all the responses. I've lined up a new 2023 MT-10 SP for $14,500 (+ tax/reg). Dealer is offering top dollar on the Superduke trade, and I think I'm going to make the switch to the MT-10.
Good friend is attempting to sway me into keeping the Superduke for it's raw power and sex appeal, but I framed it as a cost saving endeavor - switching to a bike with better reliability and lower maintenance costs long-term.
Plus if I want another Euro bike, it's going to be a 2025 SDR Evo or Ducati V4 Street Fighter / Aprilia Tuono V4.

$14.5 for a new SP?! Without your trade-in? In what part of the world does this exist?

Sales rep has been great to work with and said he thinks Yamaha made too many SP versions - they sent him three and with Get Out and Ride through September 30, $2K off.

Didn't I sell you a set of gold levers once for the fz09? Back in like... 2015-ish? Exchanged at Cook's corner?

It sounds vaguely familiar, but I don't think I ever had a set of gold levers on the FZ09. I tend to rock the stockers til I drop 'er when it comes to levers. Sold that bike with 50K miles, only drop was making a 5-point u-turn in the dirt after stopping with the boys for a cold one on the way back from World Superbike at Laguna Seca. Naturally, our LAPD riding buddy asked me if I had anything to drink..

I had your phone number in my contacts for a long time, maybe it was an fz09.org Ortega hwy ride meetup, or there was a Kawasaki focus group thing that a bunch of us went to once. I dunno haha it was probably close to 10 years ago. Small world though anyway. Anxious to hear what you think about the 10 SP. Which dealership are you buying from?

I bought my 19 new in the fall of 202 and in the last 4 years have put over 16k miles on it with zero issues other than the factory battery needing to be replaced last year, and that was only because it quit wanting to fire the bike up on those 30ºF mornings lol.
I've got a Hindle 3.4 exhaust with a 2WDW ECU flash, AIS block-off plates and a ton of other little mods and it's been mint. The comfort seat was a welcome upgrade as well - Yamaha has never been known for comfy factory seats.
My headlights are starting to crack but that seems to be a gen 1 issue so far. They crack from the inside so it's not from external damage at all. I've yet to see any second gen headlight issues so far though but it's only been a couple years.

Success! Added a 2023 MT-10 SP to the stable last week. I only had a day to make the drive between the Mrs work schedule and childcare. Rented a truck the day prior and left at 1:30am on a 6hour drive to K&B Motorsports in Petaluma, CA. Dealership was great to work with and paperwork took all of 10 minutes. Had the bike loaded by about 10am and 6 hours to drive back home. I've put about 40 miles on the MT-10 with my limited riding time. It's a quick bike in stock form, very smooth. It doesn't punch you in the nads off the line like the Superduke, but that mid-range surge north of 4K RPMs is pretty intoxicating. Keeping both bikes in the stable for now as they both serve different purposes. Planning a Graves Cat-Elim exhaust and VCyclenut ECU flash in a couple thousand miles. David has been a pleasure to work with in the past and he gets a good price on Graves products. Ran his tune for 50K trouble-free miles on my FZ-09 and I am sure his MT-10 ECU flash will not disappoint.
