Current ride is a 2019 KTM 1290 Superduke R, fitted with all the bits. ODO 8,000 miles. Full stage 3 monster. I call it the Meat Hammer. One to two track days a year, mostly use it to run errands on my lunch break. All of my riding buddies are into other hobbies these days. Before the KTM, had a 2015 FZ-09 that I racked up 50K miles on. Really loved that CP3! My dealer has two 2021 MT-10 in the sexy blue/silver color that are giving me a hard on. Got my KTM converted back to full stock in case I decide to trade her in. Newer bike, cheaper maintenance than the KTM, insurance is up a tad on the MT. Gonna have to dump about $3K into Graves full exhaust + Vcyclenut ECU tune.. and misc cosmetic upgrades. My wife really wants to buy a house, but it's bookoo expensive right now

Get the MT10 and buy my Graves exhaust for $1k. You won't regret it! I appreciate it! I'm gonna have to go full Titanium on the next system. Had it on my FZ09 and the Ti headers allowing for thinner tube diameter had a great "rin-tin-tin" sound.
I have a similar Graves 3/4 system on my SDR and it sounds great, but I'm not fond of the steel header to Titanium mid-pipe coloring going on.

While I love the MT-10 if you already have the super duke not sure why you wanna trade it in, seems like a huge waste of money IMO.

While I love the MT-10 if you already have the super duke not sure why you wanna trade it in, seems like a huge waste of money IMO. There are a few reasons. I appreciate the objectivity as I've been battling it in my own logic I'm ahead of the loan on the SDR and owe less on it than trade-in value. I can pickup a 2021 MT-10, two years newer than the SDR and have it payed off in the same duration. I thought I would be a huge fan of the keyless system and I'm not. The RFID fob is (expensive &) slippery as hell and I've resorted to keeping it in my backpack to prevent it sliding out of a pocket during rides. It's range is short and any cellphone or beer can interference seems to cause an issue starting the ignition. I have to pull it completely out of my bag sometimes to get the bike to turn on. I added the Performance & Track Pack before my last track day. Found out the Quickshifter is built-in to the bike and you need the Performance Pack license to activate it, which is B.S. IMO. That said, it's not as slick as I'm accustomed to on the inline 4 motors. It doesn't just bang through the gears like the FZ-09 or the S1000RR I've ridden with QS. The ignition cut during shifts is way longer than it needs to be and I can shift faster feathering the clutch down the straights. Even in Track Mode, when you disconnect all the lights, the dash will bitch at you to no avail about lights being disconnected. Really annoying when you're trying to tow around a racetrack. My mechanic is certified KTM and he and I both can't find a solution to this. Longevity and Maintenance. OEM DID Chain was spitting O-rings at 5-6K miles. Replaced the set before an upcoming trackday to avoid any issues passing tech inspection. I have a lift in my garage and do pretty well to clean/lube in between rides. My mechanic said it's the norm for a bike with that much torque and most of his 1290 customers eat their chains under 10K unless they're highway mileage gobblers. I change my oil every 2000 miles, it's about $160-$170 if you run the recommended Motorex 10W-50, change the filter and two screens. My experience with most Japanese bikes- they'll run almost any 10w-40/50 and a filter is $10 I like replacing tires and am happy to see anything over 1500-2000 miles on a rear. The last three rears have all spun on the rim. Just leads me to accept the motor is putting down more grunt than can actually be used. It sure is fun though. Single side swingarm "looks" cool. Had to buy a special rear stand of course, and it's a bit of a pain in the arse to get that rear up, compared to swingarm spools IMO.

I was not thinking about the maintenance and reliability costs associated with the KTM so yeah that would make a difference in purchase decision.
I track my FZ-10 a lot and its a great track bike until you start pushing really hard.
Its very easy to get track ready. Pull the rear light harness connector underneath the seat and bam your are done. No jacked up lights or electronics getting pissy with you. Mirrors come off with the twist of a wrist.
In stock tune the bike is fun but after removing the cat and getting a proper tune this thing is a wheelie beast!
Only things holding me back on track are: Brake pads dont offer great bite. They stop fine but just dont give you a lot of confidence. Rearsets need to be a tad higher for more lean angle. It scares the crap out of me when I scrape the pegs on ground. Need better rubber. I'm running Bridgestone S22's but my skill has gone up quite a bit this year and now I'm outriding the tire so maybe RS11's next? I still need to ride my bike on the street.
But back to you, if you wont take a bath on the KTM and you are not happy I say go for it!

Keep in mind this isn't an inline 4. It acts more like a Vtwin/vfour with the cross plane crank. It's a bit rough on take off due to that. I'm tiring of the sound with an Akra cat delete midpipe as it's quite loud and "flatulent" at speed. I have a stock muffler, not sure if there's an aftermarket one that would help. They are supposedly about to redesign it/update date it, so I would think you should wait a bit. Maintenance is too easy to do yourself on Jap bikes, so definitely a lot cheaper there!

I recently switched from SDR (2015) to MT10 (2018). The SDR is an amazing machine, runs very smooth with tons of torque to have fun BUT I just missed my MT09 (The bike I had before the SDR) so much so I had to switch MT 10 instead. Here are some of the reasons : 1. SDR is a bit longer than the MT10, therefore It is not as agile as the MT10. 2. Vibration. SDR's V-TWIN engine vibrates a lot (not sure about the newer ones ) , MT10 is definitely smoother in this sense. 3. Parts. I am in Canada so ordering parts or waiting for parts have been a pain. Again SDR is still an incredible machine.
