So instead of starting a new thread, I’ll ask some of you….which gen and why? Not to start ragging on someone’s choice, rather what makes it more amenable to you. I had to sell my ‘20, and now have a chance to get one again, but I’m struggling with choosing which. Give me some reasons. Seems like a good thread to pose this question, but if it’s not, just erase it. Cheers I’ve ridden both (although several months apart) but only owned a new gen. I feel like they are fairly similar in terms of how the engine behaves. Despite the new gen having a different sprocket size, it still wants to wheelie like crazy depending on your traction control settings and I average much higher mpg than the old gen (maybe putting the same sprocket size on the old gen might fix that). i love the TFT display, both clutchless up and downshifts. I recently got the OE grip warmers, they work a lot better than the previous Yamaha heated grips and have much more precise settings (through the TFT). however if you don’t care about the added tech, styling, or want to save money, the old gen is not to be discarded

- Scrolling through displays 1,2,3,4 is counterintuitive (for me) with the scroll wheel. At first it might seem like it makes sense to go from display 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 by scrolling up (ascending order). But I always, instinctively, scroll the opposite way. Probably because in the settings, they show 1 on top of 2 on top of 3 on top of 4 like this: 1 2 3 4 So I always want to scroll down to go from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4. Fix: I customized my displays in the opposite order so when scrolling down or up goes on the display I want (4,3,2,1) I actually ended up understanding the way Yamaha set this up. Going up on the scroll wheel causes the menu to go down as if we swipe up on a touch screen to scroll down. I got used to it now and it doesn’t bother me anymore

I actually have some of the features you mention on my tracer, including scrolling, tft, heated grips, etc. Do you think the fueling is light years better? Honestly, that’s about the only thing I think would really sway me. But I’m still going back and forth. Thankfully there’s no rush. Really appreciate your answer. 👍

What do you mean by fueling? Gas consumption? I don’t know if it’s a lot better because I never had the previous gen, I just rode it a couple times so it’s hard to compare. From what I’ve read though, the old gen seems a lot more thirsty. By no mean the new gen is a gas efficient bike and can definitely use a lot of gas at WOT, but it’s very easy to get 36-37 mpg on my daily commute

Sorry no, fueling means throttle control. Don’t care about mpg’s. Wrong bike for that kind of stuff. No worries. Appreciate your input.

Oh i see. I was going to say, no one should by this bike for mpg lol
Throttle feels smoother that the previous gen. And definitely a lot smoother than my old mt09 too. It’s not perfect but definitely better
in my area Yamaha has demo ride once a year. Ideally you should check if it’s the same in your area so you could try one and see for yourself if it’s worth getting the new gen over the old gen

Can I add my 2 pennth? Inserting the key is a fiddle due to clutch cable going across the housing. The clutch cable rubs on one of the forks and makes a noise. The ECU is a pain to remove to get it flashed. No auto cancel on indicators. My old street triple 765 (18 plate) had this. My battle-ax s22 rear has lasted 1400 miles. And no I don't do burnouts. Lack of aftermarket parts. I've decat,d and put a 3/4 Akro system on, but can't find any carbon anywhere. Having said all that, when I'm on it and riding, I love it.

As to the OP's comment on the scroll wheel, I agree, easy to scroll when wanting it to press in. I foumd that I get better results if I position my thumb on the lower part of the wheel, then it will press and not scroll.

2023 here:
-Weird but the heels of my Sidis hit the passenger pegs. Mostly my left heel. At least I think that's what I'm hitting.
-Ticky tick engine noise most noticeable at low speeds and idling at stops
-Original seat was pretty bad but optional comfort seat more or less resolved that. (Tag on the back that says "COMFORT" is funny)
-Fuel guage: full, full, full, full...HALF TANK
-Default fork and shock settings were bone rattling on bad pavement- easily adjusted
-Still trying to figure out mode/select/scroll wheel functions, love the flexibility and customization potential but there's a lot going on. I leave it in B mode and call it good.
-Warmed up to front end looks, cyan wheels still not totally in love with. Subjective I know.
Pretty minor nits to pick on an otherwise amazing bike!

22 model
1. You covered the scroller button crap... it would be better to have two separate buttons for enter and cancel, with the scroller.
2. The seat, definitely bad. I feel like the comfort seat should be original and a more comfy comfort seat as option..
3. Very cheap and ugly looking brake fluid cup towering way too high up.... looks Redneck-ish...
4. Fuel consumption is really bad. I get that it drinks alot when pulling, but I have tried to get it to be more economical. (Gas, in Norway, is crazy expensive 2-3 usd/LITER a gallon is about 4l? 8-12 usd/gallon...).
5. Its built with cheap plastic and useless mirrors... unless you buy extenders, (still not very good rearview), it's alot of gymnastics to see anything..
6. Maybe its just me, but I'd like to lower my elbows and relax as much as possible. Now, i get tired, stiff and dull aches in my shoulders, my wrists are constantly pointing max inward.. basically the steering bar is...
Think its ALL I have an issue with the 22 mt10.

This is kind of funny. I had a Tracer 900GT, which was stolen yesterday. Plan is for a MT10 to replace it, but if I where to put a list of my Tracer gripes up, it'd be pretty much exactly this.
Heels on the passenger pegs with the balls of my feet on the main legs. Stupid scroll wheel that sends a up or down instead of clicking (or immediately before clicking). Ticky noisy engine. Damn fuel gauge that reads full/half/quarter/eighth and I swear "half" is actually more like a third of a tank left for how fast the rest goes down.
Well. At least I know what I'm getting into.

Sorry that you bike was ripped off and can imagine how that felt. I feel you on the fuel gauge as that is one of my gripes. I got used to the CCT noise coming and going, it’s a Yamaha thing. I have a 2020 so no scroll wheel, but I have it on my MT07 and yes that is a poor design imo. So a pretty small list for my gripes, just the fuel gage. Oh and the hard OEM seat.

Yeah, it sucks, but... eh. I'd been waffling about trading it in for an MT10 for years anyways. Never did because I couldn't really justify the expense just to have more go-fast, given the CP3 is certainly no slouch. But now, as it's gone and I need to replace it.... But yeah, while these things are annoying, they're not really a huge deal. It's pretty rare that I have any need to interact with the scroll wheel outside of turning heated grips on and off, and the fuel gauge is inconvenient but whatever. None of them impact my fun actually riding. Should be 4 more days till my insurance is sorted, then it's MT10 time. There's 4 nice black 2023's and a 2022 near me (and a few cyan ones, but... I don't want to spend that much time cleaning wheels) and I'm eyeballing them daily.

I have the orange wheels on the 10, they show everything. My MT-07 is the cyan, same issue. Have to say tho they look great when clean rolling down the road. 👍

Was on prior Yamaha's I've owned as well (also had an 07 too, and a Tenere 700 and Tracer 900GT)... Every time I looked long and hard at those colour schemes, particularly the cyan 07 - what was it, ice storm? whatever - it was gorgeous. But... Well, I know how dirty my wheels get, and how I generally don't really bother to clean them at all. It'd look *so bad* with weeks/months of daily riding grime. I mean, realistically, while I do around 20k a year, I wash my bikes maybe two, three times a year and never get into the nitty gritty, just a basic hose down/soapy wipe/hose down. They'd practically never look good for me. Even the dark blue on the Raven Black SP is going to be a test for me

Totally understand I get 3-4 k a riding season here and wash them once a month. But wipe down the wheels more often. It’s a pita, but the price ya gotta pay for bling bling wheels.
