Due to the thirst of these machines, I'm just wondering if anyone has come up with a good way to carry a decent amount of gas (Very minimum a half gallon) on these bikes that's semi-inconspicuous. I was thinking about the MSR bottles and mounting them somewhere tucked away, but I haven't fully thought out this plan yet. Are there any products/methods anyone out there is using that fits this bill?
Thanks

I'm thinking a couple of the aluminum cans mounted underneath the fender, but I have no idea if that can work until I can get to my bike and check it out.

interested to see what you do, am thinking of a rack and 5 litre plastic can for when I tour Europe, will be loaded with luggage so don't care what it looks like
think any metal container has to be able to breathe, maybe fit one like a NOS bottle?

I think I may be able to swing (2) 30 oz bottles. They don't need venting apparently. Look up MSR I think that's what I'm going to use. I'm just looking for some "Oh sh*t" fuel in case I get caught out in the middle of nowhere. Sad thing is, with the thirst of this bike that still only gets me roughly 13-15 miles, but that's better than nothing!

What I do is top off the tank to the top (but not the top of the neck though) if I'm riding, which affords 1/4 to 1/3 gal more. Fuel level will start dropping right away, so no big deal. But if you're going to park the bike under the sun right after filling it like that, it's obviously not a good idea. The good news is our bikes don't have a charcoal canister, so the worst case scenario is a little fuel would drip down the bike thru the vent drain hose. When riding an unknown route with no gas stations, it also helps to ride at a slower pace, to make sure you'll make it to the next station (or back to the same, like in my case). That's what I did. I had about 30 miles to spare, so next time I won't have the concern of running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere anymore. That time I got a darn CEL, so it added stress to the trip. Ha ha. But after the bike restarted fine, I suspected it was related to the EXUP valve (which it was).

I have a Shad hard bag setup and I can actually fit a gallon can in the side bag. I am glad that I have a close proximity to gas stations though most places I go

But after the bike restarted fine, I suspected it was related to the EXUP valve (which it was). This is a good tip! I currently do the same. I make sure the bike is upright when filling and top it off. I have noticed almost every morning I've ridden to work recently there has been fuel dripping out of the relief hose, but that happened even with a half tank which I thought was weird. It must just be that big of a pressure difference from being cool in the morning vs. in the sun in the afternoon. The problem I was trying to avoid specifically was getting caught out which with this thirsty bike can happen even if I top it off haha. I wouldn't really expect it to happen, but when taking a new route I want to be extra careful (better than waiting hours for AAA). What I ended up doing was using the bag I have to hold (on the outside) 2 30oz MSR cans. With the bag I have it actually works out well as there is almost a dedicated space for them. I'll try to get some pictures.

The SW Motec rear aluminum rack or another rear rack along with a Rotopax fuel container and mount would be the easiest way to carry extra fuel, Rotopax makes several different sized containers. The only other thing is to keep the bike topped offf anytime you stop, that’s what I try to do, the bike is comfortable but range is limited by the way it consumes fuel, 27-30 mpg is about all I can get out of mine with a flash and 3/4 exhaust. My normal Sunday loop which is about 250 miles takes a full tank from home and 2 fuel stops, my other bike a Tiger 800, makes the same loop with one stop, ridden hard it get 38-40 mpg, but the fun factor is higher on the FZ10.

I keep am MSR cylinder in the saddlebag, especially on longer rides. It's come in handy when I've spotted a few fellow riders pushing their bikes.

With the gas prices here in Cali, I should charge.

No one has any photos yet?
I really don't have room to spare in a top case or side bag. Was hoping someone came up with an external mount of some kind.
Inside the passenger pegs?

If you have a top case then you might consider doing something like what I've done on other bikes of mine. It's probably a little too "utilitarian" for the FZ/MT-10 but... Here is a couple of pics of my XT-250 setup. I don't normally have the red tank on top, I just add that if I'm going to really be out in the wild. Usually the MSR bottle gives me enough peace of mind. So far I've only had to use it twice, both times to help people in cars who'd run out of gas.

Those bottles are nice. How much do they hold? They look small, but even if they only hold 1/2-gal, we could carry 1 on each side with nice, integrated brackets . They could be attached to the passenger peg mount bolts. That'd be a nice project for somebody. He he.

But the bike it's on gets right at 70 mpg. So I can get down the road another 15 or so miles on that bike with just one fuel bottle. A couple of them on these bikes at 30 mpg... 30*.23*2 = 13.8 miles... You could extend your range over 10 miles with 2 of these bottles. I'm sure you could do the math. Just trying to be helpful by throwing the numbers out there.

Thanks for your input. So basically 1/4-gal. times 2. If you ride leisurely, the bike easily gets 40 mpg, so about 20 miles of extra range. Not too shabby. And those small bottles wouldn't look too bad at each side. But again, we need special brackets .
