Hello everyone! I would like to thank everyone in advance for reading and potentially responding to this thread! I am posting on this forum to hopefully receive insight insight on what my next bike should be. Now I know that this may be a bias place to post but anyone who purchased this bike while in my same situation would be able to offer the insight I'm looking for. I would not say I'm a experienced rider, but I've been riding for 3 years on like 5 different bikes. - Ninja 250
- KV 750
- XS 650
- Honda 1100 Phantom
- XB250
As you can notice, they are all bikes that are cheap and just get me riding. Now that I am in a position to purchase a new one, I would like to capitalize on that. I have narrowed my bike options to the naked bike class. FZ-09, 07, 10 (obviously). Fj-09, Duke 790, CB1000r, Monster 821 Stealth. As you can tell this is a broad arrangement of potential bikes.
I am just worried that my experience on these cheaper, slower, some even cruiser style bikes haven't set me up to safely use the MT-10. I see videos of people wheeling and flying down the interstate and while I've done my fair share of this, I don't want this crazy machine as my daily driver. I truly want the MT-10 but I don't want to be stuck on something that is to powerful to have fun with.
I am expecting a fast bike when buying the MT-10. I am just worried that I won't enjoy it being worried that I'm going to low slide it. That being said, I have never had a motorcycle that was fast enough for my taste. All of them never had that kick I was craving at the higher RPM's.
I would just like to know what everyone was thinking!

You will be fine on the 10 just dont ride it like an idiot. If you are from the states it is detuned from the factory and only puts like 135hp to the tire. When you have a good bit of experience riding it get it flashed and enjoy 150whp. It is a wheelie happy bike but its easy to not wheelie if you dont want to. For sure a lot more fun of a bike than the mt09. Having said that if you intend to use it as an ecery day bike the 9 has a good bit of power still and will get much better mpg and be cheaper on insurance. Even the mt09 will feel like a rocket ship coming from those bikes.

I've got an fz10, and my wife has the mt09. I love my 10, but in town the manners of her 09 are much better. I've never felt like I was missing the power while on the 09 either, I've got over 45 yrs of riding experience and have had many fast bikes. I'd recommend riding both of them if possible and choose what feels most comfortable to you.

That being said, would it be worth getting a used 09 then going to the 10? I kinda feel like I won't "appreciate" the power until I have consistently used the 09. I'm not apposed to this idea but i just know ill end up going to the 10 in the end anyway. Thanks!

If you put it in B mode the throttle is very tame, more so than a FZ-07 in my experience. I dont like that mode personally since it feels a bit sluggish (great for rain though, very gradual power increase). The FZ-09 is more fun to ride in the city, and ino way happyer to lift the wheel up during normal riding. The MT-10, while more powerful, manages the power better, and being a 4 cyl, has to spool up a little bit (5-6k rpm) to truely get going. The FJ-09 is absolutley a better choice if you are going to tour. All the upsides of the FZ09 and has cruise control like the 10. More fun and controled on gravel (the spool up of the 10 can throw you off), way better gas mileage. Dont expect that on the FZ-10, the mileage is so horrible gas stations will be your second home. The 10 is way more fun though at 40 mph+. It will make you feel like a bullet. In A mode you open the throttle and the power is immediate (like the 09 too, but way harder). You wont lowside with the traction control on. Youre very unlikely to flip it even in mode 2 (not sure of mode 1, dont feel like experimenting with less traction control just yet). I was originally going to buy the FJ-09, went to the dealer with cash in hand, then i saw that they had a rental fz-10 (season rented to one person) with 5k miles on it for the same price. Went for a test ride and took it home with me. B mode with TC3 will be close to the bikes youve ridden. Once you get comfortable, go for Standard mode with TC-2, thats when youll get to feel what a big bike feels like and when you are ready to unleash the beast, A mode with TC-2 If you ride around country roads and highways a lot, get the 10. If you stunt or ride slower speeds, get the MT-09, if you tour, get the FJ. Go rent a FZ10 and a FZ/FJ09 for 3 days or so each id say. Decide yourself. With the right power mode and TC mode, the only noob mistake youll really make is get too exited when accelerating, keeping the throttle open for too long. Both the 09 and 10 will power wheelie way past 60mph. Compared to other bikes ive ridden, the FZs have the most immediate power delivery. Even when compared to the Z900, the FJ-09 with less Hp and Torque was way more fun since it wasnt as controlled. This is in a good way, it doesnt give you over confidence as the Z900 does, i was scraping pegs within 4 hours of riding it and pulled a wheelie when exiting a turn without even feeling scared. Thats why i pulled it off my "bikes go get" list. The FZ diciplines me more.

As others have pointed out, the FZ-10 bodes well for some due to it's electronics package. In this regard alone, I would recommend it over the FZ09. The FZ09 is a handful. So is the FZ10, but due to the electronics, it is tamed power.
With that being said, it is still a very advanced bike for a very particular crowd in my opinion. The FZ-10 is basically a naked R1. There is an infamous video out there of a guy driving one of these off of a cliff. I mean it was definitely rider error, but he clearly was in over his head trying to harness such a bike in the Canyons with so much power and torque. Also, I don't know what bad advice he got from whoever cause he had the electronics turned down pretty low. I don't care what anybody else says here, in my opinion, the FZ10 falls into the class of SuperSports. 1000cc+ machines that only a decade ago, you would've only seen the most advanced of riders on.
And don't just rely on the electronics. In respect to thefinn, I do not share his same opinion that the TC will make it so that you can't lowside. This is a big, somewhat heavy, advanced bike. And it does not have the mechanical braking components that a bike of its caliber probably should.
Otherwise, its a great machine. Extremely capable in both the Canyons and on the track with just minimum aftermarket additions. It's a fairly comfortable bike and the stuff like cruise control would make it a pleasure to tour and commute on. But the gas mileage makes those two a little hard to justify the bike solely for those purposes.

It's a fairly comfortable bike and the stuff like cruise control would make it a pleasure to tour and commute on. Good luck! Maybe i worded it a bit wrong. What i meant is that it wont put you in much more trouble than other big bikes. The 10 definitely isnt a starter bike, but with 3 years of experience with some medium powered bikes, i think he would be allright. Ofcause the 10 is a powerful machine, it absolutley needs to be respected and the rider has to know how to ride well within his limits. No 1000cc, triple or even 600cc should be ridden by someone who cant confidentally ride a motorcycle and be smooth on the throttle, and most importantly, someone who cant keep himself from pushing limits. I see the electronics as a firewall in a computer. It can save you from minor errors but if you are oblivious to risks and are in way over your head, your computer/bike/health will be destroyed anyways. That being said, there is no safe way to use anywhere close to the bikes full potential on public streets. I havent pinned the throttle more than once since i got it, and that was on a highway run with no traffic whatsoever.

My 5c worth, I don't think the 10 would be suitable for a newbie rider. I have been riding litre bikes for 20 years and whilst I don't find it intimidating, it is the most hardcore bike I have ridden. My 175rwhp K3 1000 Gixer with a +2 rear sprocket is the closest I can relate it to and that was scary. Sure in the softest power and TC mode it will be safe enough and a real hoot for a newish rider, the infinite front tyre mode ( ) is absolutely mental and it would take reactions and skill to stop you looping the bike as they can bite REAL quick. Technically the bike doesn't have wheelie control as it has no IMU like the R1 etc. Do yourself a favour and get an MT07 or MT09 first and ride it for a year or two before making the leap. Even the MT07 is a great bike. Do it on PCP and trade it in after 18 months. It's your money, and your life just as this is my opinion but IMHO the 10 is a lot of bike and I fear you wouldn't have the will power not to put it in full power mode if its sat at your finger tips and that could be disastrous. Good luck in your decision which ever way you go.

IMHO the 10 is a lot of bike and I fear you wouldn't have the will power not to put it in full power mode if its sat at your finger tips and that could be disastrous. Good luck in your decision which ever way you go. I 100% agree as a veteran of litre naked bikes the last 14 years. The MT10 is altogether a much more vicious beast than most. Caution and experience is required. Nothing at all wrong with the MT07 which sounds awesome with a pipe.

I have only been riding for a year and a half and picked up my MT-10 a couple months ago. Did I pick one up to soon in my riding career? To some people they may think yes. To me I think it was the best decision I could make when looking for a bike. 3 modes make it so you can have a linear learning curve with the power while still using the same bike. I've put 1500 miles on so far and I ride in the most aggressive mode as it is the best feeling to me. First 500 miles I rode in rain mode just to feel the bike out and keep myself contained when breakin it in. All it takes is a little throttle control and self containment and you will be alright. There is no need to be scared of it but it should be respected.

Good luck! Thats a great point. I totally agree with you too. This is defiantly a super sport machine in an upright position. I would also even consider the 09's and 07's super sports! They, like the 10, have that totally mean attitude in a different position and gearing. They are just obviously smaller engines. Now that being said. Just because it is a liter sports bike, doesn't mean a person has to use it like one. Hopefully I can use the bike without tearing it to shreds because the throttle is touchy. Reading all these comments, I don't think that will happen. But your point is received. This is a superbike and MUST be respected as such. Thank you! Do you have any advice to improve the braking? I saw other threads that put olins on...Is this something I should consider? Thank you so much!

More fun and controled on gravel (the spool up of the 10 can throw you off), way better gas mileage. Dont expect that on the FZ-10, the mileage is so horrible gas stations will be your second home. The 10 is way more fun though at 40 mph+. It will make you feel like a bullet. In A mode you open the throttle and the power is immediate (like the 09 too, but way harder). You wont lowside with the traction control on. Youre very unlikely to flip it even in mode 2 (not sure of mode 1, dont feel like experimenting with less traction control just yet). I was originally going to buy the FJ-09, went to the dealer with cash in hand, then i saw that they had a rental fz-10 (season rented to one person) with 5k miles on it for the same price. Went for a test ride and took it home with me. B mode with TC3 will be close to the bikes youve ridden. Once you get comfortable, go for Standard mode with TC-2, thats when youll get to feel what a big bike feels like and when you are ready to unleash the beast, A mode with TC-2 If you ride around country roads and highways a lot, get the 10. If you stunt or ride slower speeds, get the MT-09, if you tour, get the FJ. Go rent a FZ10 and a FZ/FJ09 for 3 days or so each id say. Decide yourself. With the right power mode and TC mode, the only noob mistake youll really make is get too exited when accelerating, keeping the throttle open for too long. Both the 09 and 10 will power wheelie way past 60mph. Compared to other bikes ive ridden, the FZs have the most immediate power delivery. Even when compared to the Z900, the FJ-09 with less Hp and Torque was way more fun since it wasnt as controlled. This is in a good way, it doesnt give you over confidence as the Z900 does, i was scraping pegs within 4 hours of riding it and pulled a wheelie when exiting a turn without even feeling scared. Thats why i pulled it off my "bikes go get" list. The FZ diciplines me more. That was very helpful, thank you for responding. Who is renting these machines? Dealer? Third party? Manufacture?

My 5c worth, I don't think the 10 would be suitable for a newbie rider. I have been riding litre bikes for 20 years and whilst I don't find it intimidating, it is the most hardcore bike I have ridden. My 175rwhp K3 1000 Gixer with a +2 rear sprocket is the closest I can relate it to and that was scary. Sure in the softest power and TC mode it will be safe enough and a real hoot for a newish rider, the infinite front tyre mode ( ) is absolutely mental and it would take reactions and skill to stop you looping the bike as they can bite REAL quick. Technically the bike doesn't have wheelie control as it has no IMU like the R1 etc. Do yourself a favour and get an MT07 or MT09 first and ride it for a year or two before making the leap. Even the MT07 is a great bike. Do it on PCP and trade it in after 18 months. It's your money, and your life just as this is my opinion but IMHO the 10 is a lot of bike and I fear you wouldn't have the will power not to put it in full power mode if its sat at your finger tips and that could be disastrous. Good luck in your decision which ever way you go. I wouldn't have asked if I didn't want to hear your opinion. I am well aware that this motorcycle may be too much for me and I am totally fine with you saying it just may be! I was worried that to 09 might be worse because of how light it was! If thats not the case I see the 09 as a slightly better option. I am sorry but I am unfamiliar with PCP. May you expand on this? Thank you!!

I have only been riding for a year and a half and picked up my MT-10 a couple months ago. Did I pick one up to soon in my riding career? To some people they may think yes. To me I think it was the best decision I could make when looking for a bike. 3 modes make it so you can have a linear learning curve with the power while still using the same bike. I've put 1500 miles on so far and I ride in the most aggressive mode as it is the best feeling to me. First 500 miles I rode in rain mode just to feel the bike out and keep myself contained when breakin it in. All it takes is a little throttle control and self containment and you will be alright. There is no need to be scared of it but it should be respected. May I ask what you rode before the 10? I had a 2016 Suzuki GSX-S750. Bike was amazing and I will seriously consider getting another at some point in time. Only reason I upgraded is because I have a buddy that is buying my GSXS.

Every time I ride my wife's mt09, I ask myself why I spent the extra money for the 10? Then I ride my 10 and say to myself this is why. Point being if you think you might be happier on the 09, then that probably should be the bike you get. Unless your racing or need the cruise control for traveling IMO the 09 is a better choice. The 09 has the D modes and TCS also. Even with a flash the extra torque the 10 puts out makes it a beast to control on City streets. The 09 never makes me nervous in 35 mph stoplight to stoplight traffic. The 10 makes me worry about hitting a bump and eating a bumper. But I think we have the nation's worst roads here in NM.
