My unused 2017 R1 cover arrived today, cost me £22 ($28) from eBay. An hour with a Stanley knife and needle file and I’m well happy. If you click on my piccy then click again once opened in IBB you can see it close up. It is pretty clean.

It is, I spent twice the time and mine isn’t close to that clean... but good enough and I might find some time to buff it up 👍

That plastic is thick but as soon as the Stanley knife starts to cut through it goes well with constant pressure. I will add though, that before I started I drilled the corners of all the shaped sections so I didn't have to try and be too anal when radiusing the corners. I think I used an 8mm drill in my battery drill after putting a small pilot drill through. Exactly what I did. Worked out awesome

Hey guys, finished up one out of the 5 holes (pic below), and left it close to perfect (good enough, even for my anal standards), since I was experimenting how to do it, and nicked the interior surface a couple of times, but sanded them down close enough that it'll be completely unnoticeable, unless I get to an inch of it with a flashlight. If you run your finger, you can't feel there was plastic there before; it's smooth all around. The exterior surface is absolutely perfect, so good news there. The only thing bothering me is after sanding the plastic smooth, the color is now gray, not black. THAT would be noticeable, and want to correct it. Any suggestions? Tried one area with a black Sharpie, but it won't look good IMO. Could be a last resort, but prefer some other way, like with those products to bring plastic (like bumpers) back to black. Took me a while to do the first hole, experimenting with different methods. I obviously used a drill bit on a Dremel to drill all around each piece, then cut it with a Stanley blade. What I'll use on the other 4 is a Dremel grinding bit that looks like a Torx bit. After that, a couple of jeweler's needle files (round and straight), and finally 400-grit sand paper. The other 4 cavities should come out even better, since I already know how to do the job. I'm not striving for perfection since it's not needed, but if I find a way to bring the black back, it should look factory when I'm done. Should finish it next week. Hope everybody had a great weekend.

Nice job. How about heating it up with a heat gun to release the oils in the plastic. It works on old car bumpers. Check out YouTube.

Finally finished this stupid project. Ha ha. The first hole as posted above wasn't good enough, so sanded it again with tools until smooth and straight . Yesterday finally finished the last hole, without screwing up the project. Ha ha. Looks like factory, but I know it wouldn't be noticeable even quite a bit worse than mine, but I like to challenge myself. Ha ha. Anyway, my bike is done. The only thing left to buy are ramps, and finish my truck platform by painting it with a anti-skid coating, like RustOleum Restore 10X, or similar, ready for the riding season. Well it bout time! Looks awesome!!!!
