Hey, THAT is what I need to feel confident about doing an OEM finish job. However, still don't feel confident about being able to cut the lines perfectly straight. Is it possible to use a ruler or something? Just looked at the part, and have a question how to handle the super tight angles at the outer edges of the openings, where you have 25 to 30 degree angles. How do you cut those??? Is it a good idea to cut leaving a small gap first, then cutting to the edge? Curious about your specific methods. It'd be very easy to damage the visible plastic while trying to cut the plastic flush with it. That's my main concern about the finishing job. Guess doing it from the inside, and using a bit of an angle, so it's not quite flush, so avoid scratching or damaging the visible surface, no? Sounds challenging but doable. I think that set of deburring tools should be all we need for a factory finish job. I really like being able to see the outer part of the sprocket to assess wear. Awesome mod . Finally, I only have a Stanley knife. But I really doubt it'd be good enough for the super tight corners. If somebody does the job with just that, please post so we don't have to buy an Xacto . Thanks. I’m using the tip of the utility knife and a rat tail file and small stone on my dremel tool to get in the corners I tried those, ended up taking small "pie" slices until the corner was thin enough for the narrow tip of the X-acto could slice around it.

Buttoned it up this morning. After a few Heineken...I was afraid I was going to cut myself last night. Thanks for the idea. I love that look and when I first saw the direction the OP was going, I was thinking why not cut out the windows instead. 10/10

I'd prefer it if it were a brushed aluminum finish like the rear sets.

Post pics of your final results, and if you're happy with them . I don't have a rat tail file, but will order one. It becomes handy sometimes. Could also order an Xacto, but maybe the Dremel is enough, and I do have one too. EDIT: My computer wasn't loading. Saw your pictures. Looks great. But upon close inspection, how good of a job did you do Clayton? I was going to order those deburring files, but if they're not necessary, could attempt to do the job without them. My problem is I doubt anybody here is as anal as myself, so hard to visualize with far away pics.

You’ll see a few small nicks if you get really close to it. But I’m happy with it!

....My problem is I doubt anybody here is as anal as myself... I'd happily take up the challenge of most anal-retentive board member. The trick, for me, is realizing the "f**k it point" (or as I've coined, the "FIP") in any project as compared to the complexity of the task. It's the point at which I've realized the finished product is as good as my skills (or lack thereof) will allow it to be. Beyond the FIP, if I keep trying to perfect it, I'll end up making it worse. To the point of this thread... I've still been casually trying to find a stainless mesh I could use to try and attach to the sprocket cover. So far it's all been too expensive or not stainless.

My unused 2017 R1 cover arrived today, cost me £22 ($28) from eBay. An hour with a Stanley knife and needle file and I’m well happy.

Hey, if you did a factory job, do you want to do mine? Ha ha. But with needle files, I doubt it looks factory, since files leave a 'hairy' mess behind, in my experience. And fine sand paper doesn't yield factory results either. That's why I plan to buy deburring tools instead, but want to hear your experience. So you bought a used cover to experiment on? That was pretty clever. Wonder how much they cost new. Shouldn't be too much more than that, no? It's just a piece of cheap plastic. Still haven't gathered the courage to perform surgery on mine .

Cheers dude. The list price new in the UK is £70 (around $85!) not sure what the US list is. The one I purchased was removed from a brand new bike which was converted to a track toy so it has had no use and was essentially new. To be honest it's not 'hairy' and I did also run some 400 paper over it and was hoping that if I run a naked flame across it that it would release the oils in the plastic and turn the finish more factory but it didn't;t pan out that way. Still I think it looks good but on CLOSE inspection you could probably see some marring to the finish but once wiped over with ACF50 if looks pretty good. For me at least. The upside of it is I still have my factory fresh original so nothing lost except for $28 and in my opinion it looks better than Gilles' efforts!

I was planning on trying out the same version. Might have to pick up some Heineken too. 😜
