Checked valve clearance last month. Exhaust gap from 1L to 4R is 0.0055, 0.0055, 0.0045, 0.0055, 0.0055, 0.0055. 0.0060, 0.0045 inch. Specification is 0.0079 to 0.0102 inch. Clearly the exhaust gap was set to the intake specification (0.0035 to 0.0067 inch) at the factory. Intake valve clearance was in specification 0.0035, 0.0035, 0.0055, 0.0055, 0.0055. 0.0065, 0.0045, 0.0055 inch. My FZ10 was manufactured May 2016. I am interested to know if someone else discovers the same trouble. Ride on.

It looks to me like most of them tightened up just a bit. I've seen many bikes in the past with tight valves, I'm curious how many miles you have?

13,300 miles. Confident valves were set wrong at the factory. Some of my intake valves are tight, but not out of specification. All the exhaust valves were out of specification - way out. However, exhaust valves would have all been in specification by intake valve tolerance. Hence my conclusion that my exhaust valves were set to intake valve specifications. Thank you for the input. Never seen a valve tolerance close to this bad. Ride on.

theestate Did you adjust clearance and if so how was it compared to a standard valvetrain with no rocker arms?

Replaced all shims on the exhausts side. Replaced one on the intake side. I don't understand the second part of your question. Thank you for the input.

Just an FYI, looks like the cp4 is like the R6 motor in that the exhausts tighten pretty significantly once you add lots of miles. At 26k miles, all of my exhaust valves were tight, all the intake valves were within spec. I would be looking to do a valve check in the 22k mile neighborhood, the tightest valve for me was .08mm, which is cutting it too close in my book.

Damn, a valve could have been burned with those clearances, no? And being that freaking tight at basically half the check interval also leads me to believe they were set wrong at the factory. At least I hope so; otherwise we all would have to check them at 13K miles as well. Hey Theestate, couple of questions: Is your bike a 2017 US market one? I'm suspecting you're in Europe, since my 2017 was built in June 2017, which is over a year from yours, so yours should be a 2016, meaning not in the US. Inquiring minds want to know. He he. And finally, did you have to remove the cams for valve adjustment? Curious how hard (or easy) is to adjust valves on this bike. Thanks man. JC

Interesting. Rare to see production span for over a year, but maybe because it was a new model here (although not in Europe). Thank you for your reply. And glad you checked your valves early; you'd have burned a valve before the official interval for sure. Hey, how easy is to check and adjust clearances on this bike? But maybe you didn't do the job yourself. If not, never mind. Take care.

Aside from actually tearing it apart and checking it, what are some tell tail signs that your valves are out of spec?

Getting the timing chain tensioner reloaded took me days - camshafts easy by comparison. (I have worked plenty with tensioners before but not like the FZ-10 tensioner.) 2017. Reside and purchased in Utah.

Yes , that´s why i suggest to check the valves every 20000 km instead of 40000 km like yamaha say...

Valve update. Checked valve clearance again during February. Eleven of 16 valves tight - 7 exhaust, 4 intake. Getting the timing chain tensioner back in requires dark magic and luck.

How many miles between valve jobs? And how did you set them the last time? The middle of the range? That's not good news, meaning Yamaha is recommending a too-long interval.

Valve check 13,284 miles and 21,189 miles. I don't follow the maintenance schedule but rather when I have time - which is during the winter. I set valve clearance as close as possible to the mean of the tolerance range.

My 1st valve check is coming up and I'm at close to 23K miles. I've done valve shimming before on a DRZ. Can you do a small write-up on how to do the CP4's valve clearance check, adjustment and shims sizes required? I've done the spark plugs on the bike so far and that's the deepest I've dug into the bike. Any other tips would be appreciated. Thank you
