Shortly after picking up my FZ-10, my wife took a look at the seat and was concerned she wouldn't even fit on it. I recently had her sit on the bike with me just to see if her fears were true and sadly they were. Just sitting still in the garage she felt like she was going to either fall off the back or I'd have to wear her like a backpack. She said the thing that was uncomfortable for her was the extra hump in the middle of the seat. She's about 5'7"-5'8", and slender so it's not really a weight/size thing for her other than I guess the combination of her height and the location of the passenger pegs possibly forces her to sit further back. I'm the same height but not so slender but I always sit right up on the tank so she has as much room as she can get. I know the passenger pegs are a common source of discomfort for passengers but I want to address the seat problem before even concerning myself with the passenger pegs.
So.. my question being: has anyone done 2-up riding with the original seat and then swapped to either the Yamaha comfort seat or the Seat Concepts seat? I'm curious if the removal of the hump and a bit of reshaping of the seat helped, hurt, or did nothing for passenger comfort.
I love taking rides with my wife but it's going to suck if I can't enjoy riding with her because the seat is just not big enough for her. It's kind of sad she preferred the passenger seat of my CBR600RR over the FZ-10.

I switched to a Seat Concepts right away. The wife doesn't complain at all, but I have not gone on any longer distance rides yet.

It's kind of sad she preferred the passenger seat of my CBR600RR over the FZ-10. Me and the wife have put at least 10 out of the 15,000km's on my bike 2-up'ing whenever we can. Our heights are very similar to yours. We found the standard seat to cause discomfort on anything over 30-45 mins, humps and bumps in the road were also very annoying and noticeable. The comfort seat was our first add-on and worth every cent. I can ride all day without feeling discomfort and she can go a couple of hours before needing a stretch. We've often ridden 3-500km's a day without feeling like we have to quit. We are both in our mid 40's. It is thicker though...so it raises you higher off the ground. The stock seat was the perfect riding height for me, the comfort seat causes me to lean more when I come to a stop. When pillion'ing it's less of an issue as the extra weight lowers the bike. At 10,000km's I purchased and installed the rear carrier with top box. I picked up the backrest option for the top box as well. You can checkout my setup here... fz10.org/thread/1577/mt-10-rear-carrier-installWe've since put another 5000km's on the bike with this setup and it is perfect for us and it takes half a second to remove when not needed. Now she's so comfortable I often worry she's fallen asleep. Top box is great for that pillow, blanket and bottle of wine after a long ride. The top box/backrest option helps both you and your passenger feel secure, safe and comfortable. I Couldn't go back to the stock seat anymore and the quick shifters also been brilliant for us both(smooth up Gearing).

Thanks very much for the detailed response. Good to know the comfort seat may help. Also, sounds like you got a nice extra benefit of the quickshifter. I really hadn't considered one just because it seemed like it really was only beneficial for track or more aggressive riding than I'd be doing.

My fiancé and I ride 2-up all the time. The comfort seat is significantly more comfortable to her. I also installed longer passenger foot peg brackets from the FJ-09 and as well as lower foot pegs to give her more leg room. A OEM top case with a back rest was also installed. Needless to say she now enjoys riding for longer periods of time than with the stock setup.

Not sure I could go back now. We ride somewhat aggressively but even when we don’t I still make use of the QS.

I was also thinking of just getting like and old cruiser for us to ride instead but not sure.

An old cruiser would probably be more comfortable for a passenger.
