Purchased genuine Yamaha rear carrier for my MT-10. Spoke with the guys from parts and advised it was an easy install.....Just bolt it in. Well, um, yeh.....it wasn't that straight forward. Found 4 push clips in almost the exact location where this thing bolts in on the underside but they didn't line up. Thought I was just going to remove them and screw this thing in place. But what I discovered is you need to take off the side rear panels. Then underneath hiding behind the plastic...the holes I couldn't find !!!. Where's the hole?
It reminded me of an all time favourite wipeout clip - def worth watching And then on the underside of the rear panels you'l discover that X marks the spot. Then with a 27mm drill bit (circular cutter) drill the X spot(s) (2 each per panel). Then Re-install left and right panels. Now install Rear carrier. And if you purchased the pillion backrest for the 50l top box you'l need a 4-4.5mm bit to make holes in order to attach it. Open the top box and remove the silly safety sticker which covers the important marks you need to drill and make 3 holes where X marks the spot. And voila....

I have the same setup on mine. The steps above are accurate. I had the same issue locating the holes for the rear rack, however I was able to find the instructions I needed somewhere online. This post will be a big help for anyone doing this install. Thanks for sharing!

What is your overall review on the backrest with your passenger on longer rides?

Yeah that’s a nope for me. I was considering a top box all be it the smaller one, but after seeing you have to hack up all that, no thanks.

The SW Motech racks bolt straight on, no cutting of bodywork required, 10 min install. Dont bother with the OEM stuff.

Thanks for the post thread cameo, what's the size for the four screws to bolt the genuine yamaha rear carrier please? It’s been a while....off the top of my head, no idea. If I find the size I’ll edit. What is your overall review on the backrest with your passenger on longer rides? Also curious? We’ve put some 40, 000 km’s on our bike with this setup and it’s been brilliant. The boot can store up to two helmets which is awesome and the backrest is a godsend for the wife. You can also key the top box to operate using your bikes own key. We recently just got back from a 5 day tour from Sydney to Gloucester to Tamworth to Harrington to Singleton to Sydney to Blue Mountains and back to Sydney, some 2,500 - 3,000 km’s and both still loving it. As far as we are concerned the OEM setup here with rear carrier, top box and comfort seat is the best. Sure you need to make four holes in two fairings but it’s easy once you know how, hence the above instructions. Yamaha have made provisions for this setup and the rear carrier is also interchangeable between the MT09 & MT10. The wife feels way more comfortable with the backrest in place and I can’t remember the last time I rode it without it installed. We go pretty hard on our rides and we both love hitting the twisties, anything from the old pac to the Oxley to the natio to thunderbolt way (NSW - Australia).. this setup feels tight never once interfering with our enjoyment of the ride. If anything we likely wouldn’t have put anywhere near as many km’s on this thing without the functionality this setup affords us. With enough room for us to get away for 4/5 nights at a time and enough comfort to put 3-4 hours on the road without stopping, it seems the only thing holding us back is the fuel and maybe our age Often at times fuel stops really get on my nerves but you can’t have everything right, though with this simple setup it feels like we do. Smiles per hour over mileage at least until we hit 50 and then sadly we may need to move on. Fingers crossed Yam have an MT10 Tracer lined up for 2021. ps. We often ride with another couple, they have a tracer 900 GT and are also using the same top box. My wife is 5”5 and my buds misses is prolly 5”10. They both give our rigs a big thumbs up !!!

Thank you for this, much appreciated. I just bought an MT10 and will be transferring over my MT09 OEM rack. ballmead. I am looking to get a 10, selling my 09 .. I have a rear carrier i have taken off the 09 , shown as genuine Yamaha with a marking 1RC on the underside together with the tuning forks Yamaha logo. Is this the same as the one you have and did you fit it directly onto your 10 from the 09 ? I will try to attach a few photos of my carrier if you wouldn't mind taking a look and letting me know. Thanks

That is a terrible design.
I bought the SHAD and it bolts right up in a few minutes, no cutting or removing of anything.

Just wanted to add to this, though it's perhaps a bit late - you can absolutely install the SW Motech rack **AND** the SHAD hard bag system together. You'll need to whip up a few spacers to fill in gaps, but 1/2" nuts were happy to do it. Can take pics if anyone is interested.
45000km on this setup with zero issues and it's now the most practical motorcycle I've ever owned.
