Hello all, I'm not too happy with the front brakes, considering swapping up to an R1 master cylinder as I have heard good things about them. I see there's a kit available from a vendor from this site but I feel like I can get a used one and save myself a ton of money. With having to get new decent mirrors and levers, we're looking at $600+ upgrade.
Has anyone done this swap yet and can answer a few questions?
1. Do I need any additional parts besides the master cylinder and the reservoir? Like would I need new banjo bolts or anything like that? 2. ***If*** I decided to use the stock brake lines, it looks like I would have to twist the end at least 90 degrees to fit. Would the lines reach and would the stock lines fit? 3. Would the R1 master work with the brake switch of the FZ-10? Any issues with cruise control?
Appreciate any similar input about a Brembo swap.
Thanks!
UPDATE: I did eventually do the swap. Went with an R1 master, Brembo reservoir with a ladybird mount, got brake lines from stoltec (I think they were +5 inches), and modified the brake switch since the brake light was coming on late. I basically clipped some of the plastic off the internals of the switch which fixed the late brake light issue. Stoltec detailed this in his thread about the swap. Wasn't easy but I wouldn't say it was hard. Obviously replacing brake lines is usually a PITA and the issue with the brake switch was a bit time consuming, but well worth it in time and cost.
EXCELLENT mod. Definitely the best I've done on the bike. Braking is extremely responsive but probably more important was that it is CONSISTENT. What was most unusual about the stock FZ10 master cylinder was the inconsistency. Like sometimes I felt like that bike could brake just as good as anything else I'd ever ridden, and then other times it was spongey and seemed to require a lot of force to get it stopped. Going into a turn, you had no idea what you were about to get so you had this nervousness of trail braking the bike into the corner. Even coming to a stop sign on a few occasions, there were times where despite not even going fast, I had to all the sudden grab a fistful of break because my initial brake pressure turned out to be underwhelming.
I guess it might be a little outdated since you can just get the radial off the MT-10 SP and its probably an easier swap. Maybe a bit more expensive but if you eliminate the cost of having to buy new brake lines, it probably evens out. I don't know anything about that swap so I'm not sure but whether you swap with an R1 master, the universal brembo master, or the MT10SP brembo master, it is a GREAT upgrade.

Have you tried changing the brake pads first? I would start there and then see if you need more.

Try new pads. It makes all the difference.

RedAndBlack 1. Not sure about 1 & 2. I fit the R1 master with Spiegler brake lines at the same time.3. Would the R1 master work with the brake switch of the FZ-10? Any issues with cruise control? Yes, the brake switch of the FZ10 bolts right onto the R1 master. No real issues with cruise control. Mine is a bit sensitive though. If I have cruise on and ride over a hard bump the movement of the lever can disengage the cruise. I'm going to adjust the brake switch plunger or its contact point on the lever to require more movement of the lever to disengage cruise. I have Evotech levers, not OEM.You do not need to spend $600 on this upgrade.2015+ R1 brake master is $83 (partshark.com) OEM or aftermarket brake lever $40-60 Handlebar mirror adapters are $5-10 ( bikemaster.com/replacement-parts/control/handlebar-mirror-adapters-for-lever-brackets.html) I used the T2 for the mirror and the T3 and a piece of angle bracket to mount the brake fluid reservoir. R1 or R6 OEM fluid reservoirs are around $20 used on eBay. I tried and had awful experiences with the Chinese Rizoma knockoff reservoirs, so I would recommend OEM. Misc parts about $20 - the hose from the reservoir to the master, hose clamps, other hardware You could do it this way and have a huge chunk of that $600 left over for brake lines, pads, whatever.

Others have it pretty covered but I'll throw in my $0.02. Stock lines will not work, you're gonna have a pretty good kink in the line going and I don't think it'll even be long enough at that point. Just get the SS lines while you're at it, it'll come with new banjo bolts that will fit as well. Stock ones will fit in the R1 master if you find a kit without the banjos which is unlikely..
It's a common thing to do to replace the MC on the r1 to something better (they have more choices due to no cc switch), so look on eBay for gently used parts. I got the whole mc and lever mint condition for under $100. Reservoir you can go oem but I went with a brembo reservoir, mounts clean and has all the tubing and hardware you'll need. I also picked up their truck mirror mount which comes left hand or right hand thread. Stock right mirror is left hand thread so whatever mirror adaptor you use, be sure to get left hand thread OR buy a left side mirror which is right hand thread and swap the internal bolt to the right mirror so you can use it with a right hand thread mount.
If it weren't for the cruise control switch, we could rock the Brembo RCS master. That unit is the tits!! But it's pretty impossible to make the cruise control / brake switch work with any other master than the R1's.

Thanks for the feedback.
If I get Steel Braided Brake Lines, would they be sufficient or would they be setup for the stock master and not reach. Would I have to get the fitament for the R1?

RedAndBlack If you get Spiegler lines from Stoltec Moto they will fit with both the stock master and the R1 master.

Smanz is right, the kit has some plastic tooling that lets you rotate the banjo. Allows perfect alignment for either master. I tried the lines before I got the master and the lines worked fine for both.

I got a buddy that might sell me the master from a part off bike and says he will throw the brake lines in for free. Would the R1 lines work on FZ-10? Or would the lengths not be the same?

No, the R-1 Lines wouldn't work. We can do a set of the Fren Tubo lines to work with the R-1 Master (or better yet a Brembo 19 RCS). The only advantage to the R-1 master is keeping the way the Brake switch activates the Cruise and Brake light with a step between the two functions (not a big deal at all), and you will lose the function of turning off the cruise with rolling the throttle forward. The Fren Tubo lines work great, and are a better layout than the Spiegler, keeping the hard line past the motor where it's subjected to more heat and you don't want the lines absorbing heat. (and the hard lines are as solid a line as you can get=no expansion).

Yes I have done the R1 master cylinder swap. It stops the way it should have. The master cylinder and Radial mounted lever make a Huge Difference and you will definitely be glad you did the swap. I found a 2015-2016 master cylinder on eBay and did the swap Cheapbon my 2019 MT10. Plus I Did EBC Double HH pads. The Bitch Stops NOW
