As we all know there is NO facility on the FZ-10 for holding a helmet; this is a situation that has evolved over the last 20-30 years. Those old enough to remember bikes in the 70’s and 80’s, the seats used to be hinged and they almost all had one or two hooks under the seat to hold a helmet. Then the seats became contoured, lost the hinges, and over time lost the hooks under the seat. Why this simple facility was dumped is a mystery. But even sport/touring machines lost this feature…..dumb.
So here we are with the FZ-10 that holds some facility as a light sport touring rig…..cruise control, accessory tank bags, saddle bags, windscreens, etc, but no helmet lock. A fellow owner made a good effort to fabricate a helmet hook for under the seat use, but the FZ-10’s seat lock is UNDER the seat which makes it a hassle to use it as everytime you want to lock your helmet you have to reach under the seat to use the key to remove the seat. Not very convenient.
Fortunately there is a way around this, unfortunately it is not a solution that is readily available on the US market. But the internet is our friend. There is a Japanese website called WebB!ke (japan.webike.net/) which is a treasure trove of motorcycle stuff that is unknown to the US market. It is worth looking at for gear (mostly Japanese) that is for the local Japanese domestic market.
So I found a helmet lock made for the FZ1 and FZ-08, it fits on the passenger footpeg mount, a quick measurement showed it would also fit on the FZ-10. So I ordered it, paid for it via Paypal, and in three days it was in my hands, total cost $47.62 including the Express shipping. Here are a few pics of what it looks like:
You can use this with or without the passenger peg bracket in place. I’ve removed the brackets and use the Evotech footpeg blanks, but the lock fits perfectly with this setup. Now I have a simple, effective, looks like stock helmet lock. When needed it is a snap to lock the helmet, no fuss, no muss.
Now when I stop at a restaurant or some other place I don’t have to schlep the helmet along with me.
Here is the link to the part:

There is also another configuration that has an actual Yamaha part number (same lock, just a different mounting bracket) that will also fit the FZ-10. It is a little bit more but serves the same function. I actually used this lock on my FZ1, it is the same locking unit but with a different mounting bracket. I prefer the one I got for the FZ-10 but this one will work as well, just depends on your preference.

This kind of lock should be standard for all bikes, fortunately we can add it at a reasonable cost.

Thanks for the link! Ordered, worth mentioning there's a ~$8 (¥1000) coupon if you register.

So, this is going to sound dumb but I just got my FZ and don't know it very well yet. You say that the lock first with or without the passenger footpeg mount in place, but will this work if the footpeg itself is still installed? I really like the lock but don't plan on removing the passenger pegs. Thanks!

A few years back I bought these license plate mounted helmet locks. They have one bolt that goes through the plate and one small locating pin. It comes with a bracket to use but I drill a small hole in the plate to line it up. It has the added benefit of partially obscuring the plate numbers/letters just in case lol. Although a bike with bright green wheels kind of stands out. I bought them from twisted throttle. A bike shop in Rhode Island. A google search for "helmet guardian" will turn up results.

It would appear that the lock part is identical to the one I installed on my FZ-10 and FZ1 except the mounting brackets are different.
I'm not a fan of obscuring plates or plate numbers. Last week I was driving down I-37 to Corpus Christi, TX in my wife's Lexus SUV. Have had the vehicle since 2010 and it has a chrome license plate frame. All of a sudden I see flashing lights and a State Trooper pulls me over, I knew I wasn't speeding so was curious what the reason was. He comes up to the window and tells me the top half of 'TEXAS' on the plate is obscured and I was in violation. He checks insurance, registration, and the front plate, runs my license and issues me a warning. Hard to believe that he felt this was a worthwhile effort to put in. I think they fish a lot looking for expired/no insurance, expired license, expired registration, or maybe an outstanding arrest warrant.
Bikes, especially sport bikes, get lots of scrutiny. Two weeks ago I was fueling up at a Shell station and another trooper pulls up to the pump behind me but doesn't get out. I casually glanced back and I suspect he was running my plate. I finished up and went on my way. I often see guys putting their plate way up under their tail section where it is basically invisible, that is just asking for trouble.

Does the lock work on both left and right passenger pegs? Thinking of purchasing 2 to lock 2 helmets, or will 1 suffice for 2 helmets?

Don't think you could squeeze two helmets onto one lock. Lock can be installed on either side.

Just installed this on my MT10 with the passenger footpegs. Works and looks great. Thanks for the tip!
