Hello All! Thanks for stopping by and reading this important thread regarding the safety of you and your beautiful pleasure making machine, the Yamaha FZ-10. The plan for this thread is to keep a rolling list of all recalls, both soft and hard. This list will be locked from commenting, but will be open to submissions by everyone participating in the tech tips forum. We like to enjoy freedom in our forums, but we feel this list should be monitored and only contain relevant comments/list items pertaining to recalls. As this will be a community contributed list, we will attempt to have the most up-to-date info, but cannot guarantee 100% up-to-date accuracy due to very limited information available/provided for soft recalls.
All that said let's get into it. What is the difference between a hard and soft recall?Soft Recall - A recall bulletin that has been communicated to the Yamaha Certified dealership as a repairable/modifiable action item on your particular motorcycle. The dealership may or may not expectingly communicate this recall to you. Aside from what they "should and shouldn't do" convo, it comes down to business practices and dealerships sometimes do their own thing. A soft recall could range from a small item as placing double sided body fairing tape in a certain spot, to something as serious as a valve setting or ECU flash. Soft recalls can be hard recalls that have not yet been posted, by Yamaha, in a public bulletin fashion. A typical soft recall experience at the dealership: On my last dealer visit they told me there was a recall on the bike. It was for the kick stand kill switch. I didn't have it done at the time because they had to order a tool to fix it. I've checked yamahamotorsports.com recall list and it doesn't seem to be there. Hard Recall - A recall bulletin that has been explicitly expressed to the public in some fashion. Yamaha usually notifies their consumers by mailer. They also have a running list of their own which can be found here: www.yamahamotorsports.com/motorsports/pages/yamaha-factory-modification-campaigns
I experienced a soft recall, how do I contribute to the list? First, we ask that you please use the search function of the FZ10 forum to make sure that someone hasn't already requested the same addition. Chances are they have submitted their contribution, but a) they do not have all of the pertinent information or b) it may have been over looked. Keep in mind if you do find one, post in the thread and it should bring it back up to the top of the thread list for a re-discussion on the submission.
So what pertinent info you talkin' 'bout?
We want to make sure we post with as accurate info as possible. This is so that if you need to discuss any concern with your dealership of choice you are prepared for an informed conversation. Being accurate will also help inform anyone looking at the list without diving into the threads that request the modification of the list. Usually when recall work is done, the work order for the tech performing the work contains brief descriptions of the recall info such as the Bulletin #, and what work is being done. If not, you can simply ask the service writer for the info and they should be able to provide it to you. Usually the info is on the work order you sign before and after they perform the work on your motorcycle. So this is what we're looking for:In the Thread subject line please start the subject line as ***Recall Notice then add whether it's Hard or Soft then the major system it covers. Then follow the template:--------------------------------------- Type: (Hard or Soft)Recall: (A brief title of the recall)Bulletin: (The bulletin # if possible)Description: (A description taken from the published Yamaha bulletin, personal experience, or tech information from service department of Yamaha dealer. This would include the solution or work needed to be performed. Any documentation you can find from Yamamha would be greatly appreciated in this section)--------------------------------------- Example submission below:
SUBJECT: ***Recall Notice (Soft) - Side Stand Switch Fault Code Type: Soft Recall: Side Stand Switch Fault Code - P1601 Bulletin: #M2016-006 Description: Kick stand switch fault code thrown when ignition is slowly turned on. It's usually indicated by the ABS staying lit for a 5-15 seconds after start. I was able to get the tech bulletin please see images below: <pic1> <pic2> --------------------------------- Finally.... whewSince I've come across one personally, as well as others in the Forum already, I'll start off with the first known recall. I've also created a submission thread to search for and use if needed. If anyone has any comments or concerns please either PM me or any other moderators in regards to this information.

Type: Soft Recall: Side Stand Switch Fault Code - P1601 Bulletin: #M2016-006 Description: Kick stand switch fault code thrown when ignition is slowly turned on. It's usually indicated by the ABS staying lit for a 5-15 seconds after start. It doesn't seem to serious because the dealer let me go without getting it done. They had to order a part to complete an ECU flash to fix the issue. I was able to get the tech bulletin please see images below:
