I thought I saw a post on this subject, but don't find it now.
Has anyone tried using one of the various Y-Pipes but retaining the stock silencer?
I'm asking because I bought a Y-Pipe for $190, but I'm undecided on a silencer. Really I'm undecided on spending $500-600 on a silencer. I like several, but damn.
Anyway, I've been out of the country all week again, and my ECU arrives on Friday from 2WDW. It's only been flashed for stock exhaust (for now.) I'm in no rush to install the Y-Pipe and have it flashed again.
Depending on what I do for a silencer, I'll not change anything until my next business trip in a couple weeks. I hate having a disabled bike in the garage.
Does anyone know any downsides of using the stock silencer with no CAT?

I think it is a clean look for the bike and unrestricts that flow. Plus they sound killer with the just a stock can!!

Nice. Comparatively, it's a good value. It appears to come with a composite clamp. That's added value for the price.
No specs are listed, but I'd have to assume it's much lighter than the stock can. After hearing those videos you posted, that's my only remaining consideration.
The stock can sounds great without the CAT, and apparently Nels' tune works well in that state. Obviously, a silencer alone has little effect on power anyway (unless it's overly restrictive.)
Thanks for the help. You really narrowed my focus on this.

No problem. Glad to help.
It seams the stock can really is a straight through can anyway so no real restriction or weight there. Its just that heavy bulky cat.

So, if you put in the y pipe with stock muffler, what else needs to be done and what's the best way to do it?

Other than weight reduction and sound there is very little dyno'd increase in HP/TQ from the removal of the stock exhaust and CAT with a tune. Unless one is doing a custom map specifically for their bike, the gains do not justify the cost for normal street use and the occasional track day. (imho) Changing the exhaust is simple, relatively cheap and is easy weight reduction. Give Nels a call on this one.....

Two-Wheels Dyno Works. They are a vendor here and that is their dyno video up top with a decat and stock can.
They bumped the bike with that set up to 147hp and they derestrict the bike. They can also disable the servo for Exup and AIS after you remove cat and put on smog blocks. This eliminates the need to get any adaptors to eliminate the bike from throwing codes. Flash takes care of that. Plus they can bump up the fan to come on sooner to help the bike temps.

So, if you put in the y pipe with stock muffler, what else needs to be done and what's the best way to do it? This part I know! First things first. Parts. When buying a Y-Pipe (decat, midpipe.), make sure that it fits the OEM silencer. Not all do. Check that it has bung plugs for the O2 sensor locations. Depending on the flash or dyno work, you may need a servo-buddy. Electrical device to fool the ECU into thinking the EXUP system is still in place. (Not required with 2wheelDynoWorks flash.)) Blockoff plates kit. Preparation. Remove the ECU Remove the O2 sensor Barnes from the bike. Remove the silencer. Remove the EXUP servo and cables/ pulleys. Remove the CAT. These are all very easy once your looking at them. There's a thread in the ECU and sensor removal in the tech section. I think there's one for the EXUP removal too. Next, install blockoff plates and remove the smog garbage. More complex than the other stuff, but not too bad. You can also simply plug a hose behind the radiator and not do the complex plate install and smog removal. The result is identical for the engine, but retains the weight of the smog junk. Send your ECU to 2wheelDynoWorks for flashing. Install the Y-Pipe where that CAT used to reside. Install the silencer of your choice. Maintain self control of your right hand.

Nels is the owner of 2wheeldynoworks and is the guru tuner of FZ's. I know he helped Flashtunes develop their tune for the FZ-10 that all tuners now use for their baseline tune, because we found the test bikes for both Nels and Flashtune to use for their R&D. Nels is also the premiere tuner for the FZ-07, FZ-09 and FJ-09 as well as many other bikes. He is very good to members of our forums.

I'd like to use the stock silencer but remove the CAT. Where can I get the y-pipe to do this?
Thanks.
