So the dealer that I purchased the bike from are complete idiots and or not to be trusted.
1. Bike delivered with tire pressure 10 lbs under specs. 2. Sell me the wrong oil change washer.
Now for number 3. I'm at 575 miles and I go to do the first oil change today. It starts with trying to loosen the drain plug screw. I can guarantee it was WELL OVER 17 ft/lbs but it released and then I was able to see that they put the cheapest Yamaha dino oil they had. Oil was clean and no noticble debris in it. Now I go to change the filer. The wrench doesn't budge it and starts slipping. The wrench is a little loose. I'm confused and I think do I have the wrong wrench. Then I check my Yamaha OEM replacement filter and it fits. I look at the filter on the bikes and the part number is different from the correct filter part number. It's a filter that will work, but won't work with my wrench. So off to the auto zone to get the proper wrench. Well the new wrench fits, but the filter won't budge. Then the new wrench starts to slip. The same gorilla that torqued the drain plug screw down did a number on the filter. I tried a strap wrench...no go. Now the screw driver comes out. It's a tight fit, but I'm able to get the screw driver through the filter. A mess ensues. It's tight and I can only get 1/3 turn. It takes me 1 1/4 turns to get it loose enough to get a tight turn by hand. The filter should be set for 12 ft/lb. Either their torque wrench was way off or they didn't use one. I'm betting the latter. 2 hrs later I'm finish. But what a waste of time, courtesy of my dealer. I'm done with them.
The bike loves the new synthetic oil and the gear changes are smoother.
And dealers wonder why people don't trust them and don't want to use them.
/end rant

Did you buy a used bike or new? If new, I don't understand how it would have the wrong filter. Why would the dealer replace the filter unless it was a demo unit with more than 600 miles? If a demo, you should have the dealer explain how you got it with the wrong filter.
If used, the previous owner may have installed it and the dealer didn't look at that from trade-in up until resale to you.
You're very lucky to get the filter off without damaging surrounding components.. Why do so many owners use a screwdriver? If I couldn't get it off, I'd schedule it with the dealer verifying they replaced the old filter with the correct part. Several FZ-09 owners on that forum punctured their oil coolers located behind the filter using a screwdriver.
And, your rant was definitely valid. What a pain.

I bought the bike used with 245 miles on it. It was owned for a week and turned in by original owner because it was too much bike for him. I got a killer deal.
Unless the bike comes shipped with a filter installed, they could have installed whatever Yamaha that fit. They also could have changed the oil before they sold it to me. I don't know and never asked about the latter.
Since the dealer is on my shit-list, I didn't want to deal with the 'not our fault' BS. My recourse is to not spend another dime with them.
Luckily there are other dealer choices around here. Warranty work is all I really care about.
I drained the oil and getting it back to dealer would have been a waste of new oil. The screw driver is easier than it appears. I could do a 'tech tip' on this one. Start with a stubby Phillip head and then move to intermediate Phillip head. I checked length against filter to make sure it wouldn't poke through the other side past 1/4". Not enough to hit anything. The problem is that the left starting angle only allows for 1/3 turn before handle has no room to move past case. Top hole allows stubby to move it 1/4 turn where the intermediate does a 1/3 of a turn again. At that point the strap wrench got it loose enough to take off by hand.
It's actually not hard to do. It's just messy. If I'd have know it was going to end up this way, I'd have saved myself an hour.

Ran into a tight filter myself on my first oil change. Used Channellock Grooved pliers to get the sum bitch off, took some supa grip. I also got the incorrect washer, they thought I was asking for a fairing bolt washer.... All in all I know an experienced parts man from a newbie, and I rolled the dice with the newbie. Went back and got the luck of the draw with the experienced parts man. I know the feel bro.

Dealers suck. I wish we could order from factory.
they pay peanuts, so the good techs quit and start their own shops. This is why i dont let dealers work on my bikes, unless I have a failure. And after 42 years of riding, i've never had an engine failure.
So, I never buy extended warranties. Plus I mod the hell out of my bikes and warranties usually don't apply anyways.

Bikes come from the factory with oil and filter already and ready to run out of the crate, just connect battery and add fuel. Yours come from the factory like that or they did oil change before u bought it since it was pre owned

Yours come from the factory like that or they did oil change before u bought it since it was pre owned I don't know. It had so few miles on it I didn't think about asking the question at the time of purchase. But it's neither here nor there at this point. I have the oil I want in and the factory torque specs in place. Next time will be a breeze. At least I learned how to use a screw driver on this filter setup and live to tell the tale.

Same for me about the oil filter and the wrong washer from the dealer for the oil pan plug. The plug torque was way out of specc too when I removed it.

I avoid dealers as much as possible. They don't touch my bikes unless the engine blows.
