Well, as said...
My 2018 MT-10 exploded on the highway a couple of weeks ago. Everything was completely normal, it was <2000km from the last oil change and general check (and new tyres) at around 52000km ODO. It exploded while I was passing a car, accelerating from around 170km/h to around 200km/h on 5th gear, definitely not high revs. I haven't opened it up because I've been recommended not to, since everything will be broken amd paying for that just to have a picture of exactly what happened wouldn't be worth the effort, especially since we all here know what happened. I can only say that a piece the size of a 2€ coin (hehe, European here of course) from just up from the oil filter was thrown at my foot, followed by fucking hot oil and flames. The bike started vibrating a lot and I just moved out of the way and proceeded to stare at my deceased baby fro the next hour or so until the tow truck arrived.
Now I'm seriously thinking about swapping in an R1 engine with its ECU and everything else I may need and I definitely need info about that. I'm guessing is doable but I'm not sure what am I going to need in order to successfully do this heart transplant.
I definitely don't want to get rid of my Vicky, since she and I have travelled and lived across Europe and there's still plenty of world out there that she deserves to see.
What are your opinions on the matter?
PS: it's my first post, let me find out how to post a picture in here and I'll show you the open wounds!

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that your bike grenaded.
Pics might help although I imagine most "punctures" in the engine are usually pretty catostrophic and not often worth the time and money to try to repair. Guessing from your description and the oil likely igniting on the exhaust and what I've seen a few times, I imagine a broken piston punched a hole through the oil pan.
So yea, you might be in the right mindset of an engine swap particularly if you could do it yourself. But if you're going to go that route or going to part the bike out, might be worth your time to pull the exhaust and oil pan off and take a look at what caused the puncture and how bad it looks as far as how many loose parts and metal chunks. It sounds like you rode the engine to the stop instead of hitting the kill switch though so you might've done some real damage letting that bike run through the vibrations.
I wouldn't know the first thing about trying to swap to an R1 engine but obviously there a lot more you parts that you would have to swap out. Things like the speedometer. So it'll obviously be a lot more expensive than putting in another MT 10 engine.
Otherwise, part it out or roll it down the block and dump it and take your chances with insurance.

Hi! Thank you for the reply!
Yeah, I'm 100% sure the engine can't be saved. I've seen other threads of people having exactly the same sudden death.
The insurance is out of the question because it's not going to cover it and the bike is no longer on warranty either.
I can't find a gen1 engine from a crashed MT10 anywhere here in Spain nor in Germany nor on an European level. I did find though a gen2 in Germany and another one from an R1 in northern Spain, that's why I'm giving it some thoughts about the swapping.
It'll be done on a workshop, not by me (I have no idea about mechanics beyond what's normal for the average user) which will end up being around the 30% of the total cost.
What I would love to know if it's possible to swap it if I bring in the R1 engine with its ECU, cables, controls on the handlebar and the screen with the tacho?
Is there anyone in here that has done it before?

The R1 I found is a 2019 R1 (not M), 11000km ODO, that was rear-ended, so its engine, screen/tacho, and everything else I (guess I) may need should be in good shape. I may get all I need or even the entire crashed bike for around 2000/2500€ (still waiting for the owner to reply).
I've been told though that maybe some pieces that no one would have thought about may be crucial for the swap, like air box or even suspension (due to ECU and control computer trying to find sensors that are not there anymore).
If I go this way, I'll definitely share every step here because it's been very difficult so far to find info about this topic anywhere.

Sorry to hear about the bike. However, I'm super interested to see if the R1 to MT-10 swap can actually be done. Kudos to you!

Is there anyone in here that has done it before? Maybe a couple here, but several MT owners globally have performed this swap almost since the bike's release.
