Hi! Just got my first mt 10 a couple of weeks ago. A used one. MY18 23000 kms on the odo. Rode it home 600kms from the dealer and had a blast. Bike runs awsome. Never noticed any wierd sounds during inspection and testride. But then I always went at highway speeds with plugs in and the bike is dead quiet. After a few days at home i started to notice a loud ticking noice when engine braking at low speeds. The sound comes and goes. Its quiet when cold and not always present when hot. The bike runs great and there arent any ticking when gunning it. Sound is most present on the left side of engine.
Decided to take the bike for annual inspection and asked the guy if he thought the sound was normal and he did not. But he seemed pretty inexperienced. And when he came back from the testride the bike had a check engine light. Cant tell there is anything wrong. Rode it home 10kms through the city no problems. Orderd a obd adapter straight away but its not here yet.
Took the bike for a testride tonight to see if i could feel anything and to take a video of the ticking. Only thing abnormal is that the bike stalled when i started it for the first time.
Im posting 2 videos of the bike running. Is this normal?
Taking it to a yamaha dealer tomorow to see if they can read the codes.

If you have come from a non-ticking bike then the MT can be a little concerning. I bought mine with 12,000km three years ago, and noticed the tick on the test ride, but had also read that this was a "characteristic" of these CP4 engines. My bike is now at 43,000k and the tick is not any worse but it does come and go, and sometimes is more obvious than at other times. Mine is more apparent from the left side than the right which would tend to rule out the cam drive, and the valve clearances were recently checked by a proper mechanic and were all within spec at 40k. My suggestion is just to carry on and ride the thing. I also like to stay on top of oil and filter changes to keep internal wear and tear to a minimum, and I always allow a bit of warm up before riding off, and never abuse the bike until properly warm.

That sounds *EXACTLY* like my '18. To a tee.
Replaced with a manual CCT, same tick. Checked valve lash and it's in spec. Loudest from left side, gets louder when it warms up. People will claim that it's a faulty CCT, or noisy injectors, but I think the most reasonable explanation I have heard is that it's a characteristic of the cam finger followers.

Thank you for the replies! Ive decided to just enjoy the bike and maybe getting a linkpipe and remap. The yamaha tech said they all sound more or less like this. Also the check engine light was caused by a wrongly installed rear abs sensor.

It's the cam chain and it's normal. Automatic cam chain tensioners will cause what sounds like this rattle in between adjustments. It'll go away when the cam chain "grabs" it's next adjustment before the cycle eventually repeats itself. Nothing to be worried about. Completely normal in how auto cam chain tensioners were designed so the cam chain is one less thing we would constantly have to adjust. People might try to convince you to get a manual CCT but then you will be required to manually adjust your CCT occasionally.

The sound is normal and will always be more noticable if the fuel tank is 1/2 or lower. This is because the fuel tank acts as an amplifier (just like the hollow body of a guitar).

This is brilliant, I hadn't paid attention to why my bike seemed a lot tickier than other times. But for sure, OP, it's normal. Mine sounds exactly like that, maybe a bit louder (videos are always kinda tough to convey that though). Just is what it is. My CP2 based bikes did this too - both an MT07 and Tenere 700 - but not nearly as much as this one. Even the CP3 based Tracer did to an extent. So, in my experience, it's just a Yamaha thing, and particularly in this case an MT10 thing. Do modern R1's do this? I've only ridden a pre-crossplane R1, so can't compare. |

I've found mine is loudest between 70-90C, and quiets right down when it's right hotter, which is just the excuse I use to ride it hard all the time. |
