My first change is coming up and the dealer is a ridiculous price. So what say you hive. Yamalube synthetic, other, some home brew mix from your uncle Bob? What filter do you use?
Can't have a forum without a oil/filter discussion.

Do it yourself. Use any quality brand oil that gives you a warm fuzzy feeling along with a good oil filter. Keep your receipts for any warranty issues down the road. Use a new washer on the drain plug every time. Check tightness on all of the FZ-10 fasteners with a torque wrench every time you change oil. Follow maintenance schedules.

I went with Yamalube An filter solely for the reason that they offer that 100,000 mile warranty or whatever.

Was using Rotella on the last bike, but Yamalube oil and filter this time. Main reason, Yamalube warranty extension. I've got the extended warranty program as well, so they can't pin anything on the lube/filter I use. The additional 20 year 100k mile warranty will be worth it if I keep the bike. Not sure if you'd be able to transfer the Yamalube account to another person, but that would be a nice re-sale point. Would like to see them add the ability to download the log history as well, would make it easier and more convenient then having to keep my own in Excel.
**Edit: Also, the dealer pretty much said that as long as you follow the checks outlined in the manual you should be good doing things yourself. Just when it get's time for the valve checks you may want to consider taking it in to your local, or desirable dealer. So the monies you save doing the stuff yourself could be used on the more expensive maintenance checks/services.
Also, I like to do oil changes myself. I will however, take it in about every 3rd change to have them tighten things up and check closer than myself to look at ware/tare and see what they say.

Yamalube with Yamaha filter. I did it myself like I did all bikes, cars and snowblower. Sadly, they gave me the wrong washer for the drain plug at the dealership. Newbie mistake... I did not installed it.

You have to officially sign up for the warranty, which has a time limit from the purchase date. It doesn't happen automatically when buying the bike.

From the Terms and Conditions of the Yamalube Advantage Program: "VALID REGISTRATION for this Warranty must be completed at/before the first scheduled maintenanceof a Qualified Product as specified in the applicable Owner’s Manual for the Qualified Product, with anallowance of ten percent (10%) over the mileage interval, hours of operation interval, or time intervalprovided, through submission of a registration form via www.yamalubeadvantage.com. Duringregistration, the owner of the Qualified Product must fill in all required information, answer qualifyingquestions, report any/all oil changes performed prior to registration, and submit the number of mileswith respect to the Qualified Product."Further reading into the TaC it seems that the warranty is transferable. You just need to make sure you have the service records/receipts available if they want to audit you. Now to add images of the receipts to my Excel spreadsheet.
