Hey all, I know this has come up in the past but not many people talking or mentioning a cause or an issue. A new to me 17 FZ10 w/5k miles. I notice a significant whine or whining noise coming from the engine at higher gears, 4th-5th-6th gear at 45+ mph. Sounds like a turbo whining up/down. I don’t ride with ear plugs under my Arai so hear everything the bike is doing & every noise it’s making. It has a Yoshimura slip on with stock cat. Is this normal? Thanks!

Hm - my first thought is that it could be a bad wheel bearing, but you mentioned that it's coming from the engine? Based on my very limited mechanical knowledge, I've learned that whining noises could be from the timing chain or a bearing within the engine. I suppose one way to find out if it's a wheel bearing whine, whistle, or something internal to the engine - Give the engine some revs with your helmet off and at a standstill. Can you still hear the whining? At a standstill, maybe you can try to identify WHERE in the engine the whining may be coming from.
Funny enough - I was just looking at a video last night of a whining "rotor bearing" on an FZ8 last night. Does the whining sound similar to the one in this video? (hopefully not)
I was getting a different whining noise from my bike (seems more like a whistle honestly). I replaced the wheel bearings, didn't do anything. I ended up just leaving it. The bike is at 50k miles; I think it's just a whistle coming from somewhere.
Best of luck - hopefully it's just a whistle of some type and nothing to worry about.

Similar whine but no where near as pronounced. I’ve been watching a plethora of YouTube videos on the 10 and many seem to make the same whine, and seems to be just a ‘Yamaha thing’. My Tenere made a similar noise. I guess I didn’t think about it or it didn’t bother me on the Tenere since that’s a bullet proof motor, as where these are more high strung race engines with members having had detonation issues. So I’m more instinctively listening to every noise.
