Hi all! I finally got my dream bike! A brand new 2017 that has been sitting in the showroom floor for 5 years. The dealer refreshed most fluids except the engine oil, should i change the oil? I already put 130 miles on her and saw she’s also leaking some fork oil from sitting so long but the dealer said they’ll take care of it.
Other than that she is amazing and couldnt be happier!

Welcome to the forum and congrats!!!!
I think there's usually a concern with bikes that sit of condensation build up in the oil. I've also read that condensation will burn off pretty quick in an engine but I've never read anything about a bike that's sitting for 5 years. Oil typically has a shelf life of about 5 years.
This is a good question, I'm not sure what I would do if it were me. I mean you're presumably going to do an oil change at 600 miles so I think it should be ok. My frugal side would probably win and I'd just change the oil when it's due, maybe a little earlier.

My curiosity is piqued. How much did they sell a brand new 5 year old motorcycle?

Hmm well I am definitely changing it at the or a bit below the 600 mile mark, i’ll just keep taking it easy til then.

I would have changed it not just for oil sake but what that much time has done to the paper oil filter after that much time soaked in oil. I bought my jetboat seadoo and my kids raptor they both sat around 4 to 5 yrs both like new but I went trough all the fluids. Glad I did the raptor oil filter started breaking down luckily I only heard it start and I bought it
Not trying to scare you and I'm sure your filter is fine but oil change is cheap so why take a chance on your new toy. You will get the most engine break in metal partials with in 200 mile thats when I do my first on new motors especially I usually do the switch from dimo to synthetic at that point.

I bought mine back in April from the original owner with a bunch of mods and like 50 miles! He had flushed the fluids as he was a mechanic at UPS. Felt like I bought a new bike. Congrats! With it being indoors, there won't be a condensation issue.

You know what thats exactly what im going to do and change it before i hit the 200 mile mark (currently at 130) due to the degradation of the synthetic oil additives that break down over time, i appreciate the info and input!
