Went in to my local shop today to pick up some synthetic oil and was shooting the sh*t with one of the track riders. I told him I was using a K&N Oil Filter. He proceeded to tell me that they are not permitted at the local track. After doing some research just now I see they had some issues 2 or 3 years ago with the welded nut giving way and blowing oil. I used them on my R6 without incident, but it only takes once.
Was planning on doing an oil change tonight. Has anyone had any recent experience with this? Thanks much.

Yes I got a bit of experience, haha. Had one blow up on a buddies bike right in front of me. The weld on the bolt head cracked. Luckily he was able to get it pulled over and didn't crash, despite us being on a spirited canyon ride. I think we got luckily that it happened on a relatively straight part of a road we were on. I was able to stay out of his oil and he was able to notice the smoke and get pulled over. K & N replaced his back tire and I think offered him a new filter but he declined that.
K & N recalled the affected filters. I'm sure you can easily find the recall via google and check if your filter is affected.
I had a K & N on both of my bikes as well as one filter of each in reserve. They were not part of the recall. I've continued to run the filters but I don't think I'm going to continue running K & N after my next oil change. That left too bad of a taste in my mouth. But otherwise, the filters have been fine.
I did hear of some race orgs not allowing K & N filters anymore. I don't think any track day orgs went that far, at least around here. But I could see that possibly became a thing.
I would check directly with the track org. Might be something they've since rescinded. I mean K & N clearly fixed the problem or got rid of that bad batch of filters. I mean if it were a widespread thing, we'd still be hearing about it and it's been a couple years since I've heard about the last failure.

I read they are leaky and of the last 3 bikes and 12 -15 filters, the only one that leaked was K&N.

Ok so I thought it maybe appropriate to bring up my filter check at this point instead or bringing up the thread I originally posted the reusable filter I'm using now. Ok so after exactly 2212 miles on this filter I'm sold 100%. I tried to take pics of every step of the way on how much crap it traped as I took it apart . I'll just post a few pics on what it caught in a short time that I've been running it. Another great aspect is the felling I get when cleaning it was something I did not realize until I did on how gratifying it was like when cleaning a reusable air filter and just as easy to do.

Also there is more crap in the oil when I removed the filter that I did not take a picture of yet that I let drain out that I caught in another jug that I will siphon off and see what's left in that as well. I'll just make up with the very little oil loss with new oil then change it all at the 4k oil intervals.
Finishing with just saying it's nice to know what your filter is actually doing instead of hoping the through aways are or will be made the same everytine you change it . I think know I'm guaranteed the same out come every time I filter change is all , that's something to think about sorry but I over think everything...

K&N Recall for KN-204 & KN-204C Year 2016. I think K&N now supplies KN-204-1 K&N OIL FILTER Yamaha MT-10, R1M & R6 which supersedes older version KN-204... www.knfilters.com/recallkn204

All of those affected filters have either been recalled or pulled from the market. It was an issue when K&N switched production to Thailand (that's where Yamaha OEM filters are made, too). The problem is fixed and I'd have no problem using a K&N, but a Yamaha filter is about the same price so I use a Yamaha.
