I had my bike into a dealer for the brake light switch recall on Friday. As they were logging the bike in, the service manager asked when I had fitted the Gilles levers (they were on the bike when I got it) as he has seen these cause clutch cable damage. To be fair, I have found the clutch feel to be quite poor (bike had done 12000km when I got it), I lubed everything up well but as this is the first cable clutch I have used in decades I thought that was how they felt. When I got home I swapped the stock part back in, and aside from missing the span adjuster, the feel is indeed quite a lot smoother. I think the cable and Gilles lever had some interference when the lever was pulled that over time might cause some cable damage.
Just passing this on if, maybe take a close look at your clutch cables at the lever and check they aren't getting damaged.

You have more leverage on the stock lever since it's longer. The only way I can see an aftermarket lever damaging a cable is if, where the barrel slots in the edges around it are sharp which I doubt would be the case on a quality part like Giles or Puig. I'd be willing to bet what he's seen is the cheap Ebay and Cycle Gear $35 levers chewing up cables.

I've had no problem with CRG shortys so far but only a couple thousand with them. I did notice even when the stock lever where still on that I had some binding down in front of the tank by the frame I think routing suck and could hear and feel the cable binding in that location depending on where the bar are situated.
At least on my bike it's an issue I tried to relocate the cable for a more free flowing route with no luck . I lubed the crap out of the cable and will keep and eye on the wear. Not knowing where on your cable is having a sounds like by your lever just sharing my issue to see if anyone else hopefully just a one off.

Have had ASV aftermarket levers on my last three Yamahas......never had an issue with any sort of wear. As others have said, possible wear with cheap Chinesium levers.
