Hey all,
I searched the forum but couldn't find anything similar. Just purchased a used 2018 MT-10 with 2,200km on it. I already put approximately 800km and for the life of me, I can't smoothly shift from 1st to 2nd as wells as 2nd to 3rd. I am not a beginner and had a few bikes (FZ8, Ninja 650) but I can't get this thing to shift smoothly.
There is a jerk when upshifting, and I am not sure if it's the cutting out throttle and rolling on it is what's causing it, because this bike is a beast with the engine braking. If i somehow manage to shift around 4k, it's smooth, anything above 4.5-6k it's jerky, mostly in 1st to 2nd. I've tried doing it quickly, i also have tried feathering it, can't seem to get it.
Just recently changed the oil, 10W-40 Synthetic Yamalube. Clutch cable adjusted to spec. Chain slack also within spec @ 25mm.
Is everyone experiencing this or something is up with my bike? Thanks in advance.

Taking a shot, my guess is going to be It's the shift linkage that needs adjustment. It might be in a poor position causing the bike not to shift optimally. Mess around with i

That's the first thing I had adjusted and it's good. It's something to do with clutch engagement when I let on the throttle. Like the shift happens but the kick/jerk usually comes when I give it throttle or in that whole motion. I assume you don't have that problem? Wonder if the tune helps with this.

You could be feeling snatching of the fuel injection if your not used to it or have felt it thats what it could feel like , maybe read up on here about that See if that help with diagnosis. It can be very unsettling especially in the turns in the 5 to 6 k ranged little bumps and the extremely touchy throttle can maybe give you that feeling.

A few things could be the cause. 1. Does your bike have a tune/flash? 2. What throttle mode are you using? Mode 1 is very touchy, mode 2 is a bit softer and is perfect for the street. 3. If you have the Quick Shift, it will cut the ignition/throttle momentarily. Make sure you are not applying any pressure on the shifter until you are making the shift. Pulling the clutch lever deactivates the Quick Shift.

Pulling the clutch lever deactivates the Quick Shift. 1. No tune/flash. Bone stock 2.I have tried it in both modes 1 and 2. Issue is the same. 3. I'm not using the quickshifter unless I am gunning it. This issue I am describing happens with the clutch. With QS, there is a slight jerk in lower gears but I hear that's normal. Hmmm, injector snatch could be it tbh. I noticed, this bike is very twitchy on the on/off throttle which I think is normal for it because of decel cut? So when I do change the gears and turn off the throttle, me rolling back on it is what makes me feel that jerk. I just wanted to see if y'all are experiencing this or its silky smooth. It's just weird because some say this bike is silky smooth while others say completely the opposite. Go figure.

My MT10 shifts silky smooth, however, it did take a few rides to get used to the throttle response/clutch feel as compared to my prior ride (Ducati ST4 916). When using the QS, hold throttle steady, when shifting with clutch, reduce the throttle some (not all the way off). It just may be a bit of a learning curve. Happy and safe riding#

Low throttle settings are jerky. As you know, using the QS only really works if you are 50% or more on the gas accelerating hard. Otherwise clutch up shifts as traditional.
You can fix low great throttle snatchyness with either an ecu flash or a G2 throttle tamer, which transforms the bike.

Hi Malim, did you figure out the issue with shifting or you got used to it? I am having similar issue with by Bone stock (5000Km) MT10, specially when i compare with my R1M which is silky smooth on any mode!

Hi Malim, nope no luck... actually i have two MT10s both brand new 2021 Models. Other one is also behaving same (Stock) at only 2500Kms.

I guess need to ride another to see if it's just me but the fact that you have two identical ones makes me think it's the bike. Maybe the tune will be the fix as everyone seems to praise it!

The tune definitely fixes the jerk in the quick shifter. Have never noticed jerking with manual up shifts, but to be honest rarely up shift manually.

I have 17 that was bought new and it's a clunky jerky shifter. The tune helps a little but I've never liked the way it shifts.

Late to the party on this thread, but sharing my experience. Just got a 2017 FZ-10, also have an R7. Shifts on the R7 silky smooth, FZ10 jerky. For me, I think it was about changing the speed at which I release the clutch plus the amount of throttle I maintain during upshift. The added power of the FZ-10 I've found to require a slower clutch release than the R7, plus given how jerky (on/off) throttle is on the bikes, that it benefits from holding a slight bit of throttle during shift (as opposed to R7 where I could come off the throttle completely and then back on after shift).
Point being, in my case, it was just developing a different muscle memory.

Get the ECU flashed even if you still have the stock exhaust.
