looking at the picture I'm not sure how the canister attaches to the mid pipe, is there room for a clamp or does it just slip over and float around?

It just slips on. The fit is pretty tight, I just used a bit of silicone oil to help it slide on. The midpipe anchor and the muffler attachment at the rearset shinguard hold it all in place. You can look at the M4 website to see how it all fits on the bike.
