Ok this is driving me nuts. I have a tick on the left side of the engine but it’s not constant. It’s almost always present on a cold start and will keep ticking and the tick increases speed with engine revs. But say I ride to the gas station near my house shut it off to fuel up and when I restart the bike sometimes it’ll stop ticking.
If I don’t stop for gas and ride to work, about 25 miles on the interstate it’ll tick all the way through town but when I exit it’ll have stopped. I’ve talked to my dealer service manager and he can’t tell me why it’s doing this. I may be mistaken but isn’t the cam chain on the right side of the engine? So it doesn’t make sense why I’m getting it on the left side. He said I can bring the bike in (it’s still under warranty) and they’ll look at it. I don’t know if I’m just being paranoid and I’ve see dozens of posts saying it’s normal but I swear it sounds like a valve tapping.
The really bothersome things is it’s nit consistent. Any help would be appreciated guys. Thanks

It's pretty common. I think a lot of people don't take into consideration that the solenoids in the fuel injectors can be pretty noisy as well.
As long as the engine is healthy, I really wouldn't worry about it.

This is likely the cam chain. The cam chain, like any chain, stretches over time. To combat this, most sportbikes have a mechanical part called a cam chain tensioner that will tighten the chain every so often. However, being that it's a mechanical part, it's not 100 % precise. So you will fall into a limbo between adjustments where the cam chain will be a little loose and will rattle. Eventually, the chain will stretch enough that the tensioner is able to "grab" it's next adjustment and will tighten up the cam chain and the rattle should go away, at least until the next cycle of this.
It is 100 % completely normal. Some people will get a manual cam chain tensioner, but to me this is silly, because you just have to do the adjustments yourself now, and if you screw it up, you can fuck your bike up.

My bike only has about 3,300 miles on it. I’m experienced with engines. Not a mechanic but I’ve spent years working on my own vehicles. That’s why the “thus Is normal” answer doesn’t sit well with me.

Like Hooli said: it’s mainly the injectors that make the noise, nothing you can do about. Most people online seem to blame the chain tensioner for it. Either way. I’ve had multiple dealers look at mine because I was also worried about it. But all of them said it’s fine.

It’s not an injector. I’m taking it in next week. We’ll see what they say. Maybe it is normal and just a big conspiracy to get everyone to buy an extended warranty. lol

I’ll do this. I’ll make a short video of it and post it to YouTube tomorrow so you all can hear what I’m talking about.

That’s why the “thus Is normal” answer doesn’t sit well with me. Whether is doesn’t sit well or not, it’s still normal. You’re wasting your time hounding you’re dealer about it. Nothing they do is going to make it stop ticking. Good thing is the ticking goes away.

This is normal? Ok anyone want to by a low mileage one owner FZ-10? I think I should’ve stuck with Honda or Suzuki.

This tick doesn’t go away. It will for a very short time but comes back and sometimes is worse and louder than in that video. It’s intermittent in how often it happens and how severe it is. This is my first Yamaha in 23 years of riding and the 10th bike I’ve owned.

I don't really hear anything abnormal. Is it in the exhaust note or is something actually ticking within the engine? Maybe a leak in the exhaust? Maybe I gotta re listen with some headphones
I don't hear it but these ticks almost always turn out to be the Cam Chain, which as I mentioned previously, is completely normal.

An exhaust leak would explain it not being consistent.

Any update from this? It seems like my 2019 Yamaha mt10 has the same noise but coming from the right side. Noise got progressively worse.

Wow, that last video sounds much worse. Mine has had the tick since new, I installed the Grave's cam chain tensioner and adjusted it while the motor was running, no amount of adjustment made it quieter. When I adjusted toward the loose end, I began to hear the cam chain noise on the right side of the motor, which tells me the tick is likely not related to the cam chain. The ticking I hear on my FZ-10, which is like what rracer posted, is coming more from the top of the motor and seems to be much more noticeable when slowing down than at higher rpm.
To me, the post by umyboyblue sounds much worse.

An exhaust leak would explain it not being consistent. Well I do have an exhaust leak but I don't know if that's the cause or not. It's where the decat pipe of my Yosh 3/4 system joins at the Y from cylinders 1 and 2 on the leaft side. I'm going to loosen up everything and readjust that point. Hopefully that'll take care of it. I also learned that the tick might actually not be a bad thing as long as it's not causing any running or starting problems. I talked to 2WDW about it and a looser valve adjustment (but still in spec) can cause a tick but is safer than a tight valve.

I'm with him last weekend's ride it was quite in the morning then I heard then it went away by the time I got home . My question is the clicks on auto adjustment must be hair thin or what, the chain can't just keep stretching can it? New member posted so figured ide rehash it I was thinking about it on that last ride.

I have a used 2019 1200 miles That also ticks on the left side just like the OP's bike- funny thing is, I test rode it before commencing with the transaction and didn't hear it didn't even have a helmet on ?? got home with the bike buzzed around my neighborhood with my helmet on and its the first thing I noticed ?? ever since then the loud tick / noise comes and goes. From dead cold overnight first start theres no noise, as it gets to normal temps during warm up, it slowly starts to appear then gets pretty loud almost like a bad lifter noise, then ride around for like an hour and the loud tick noise is gone, what I would hear is the "normal" injector tick, then the loud noise comes back after taking a break, for like 30 min the noise would return ? have the bike scheduled for the recall also ask the tech in re: said its normal but he'll give it a check / listen when I come in I had a brand new 2009 R1 and my first complaint with the bike after 600 miles was a loud tick but on the opposite side, funny 10 yrs later the tick is now on the opposite side? very odd indeed that this noise is intermittent? its a shame coz bike has such a nice exhaust note just idling even with the stock pipe and cat, then the noise appears and totally distracts from that nice exhaust note, and honestly embarrassing at times.... sorry for the rant

Been reading the thread as different posts are added so my two penny worth Cam chain, Solenoid ?
If its normal or not, the question hasn’t been answered and if it is normal that doesn’t mean its nothing to worry about
‘ What is causing the noise, does anybody know ?’ Cam chain, Solenoid or something else ?
It would be nice to know and it would give peace of mind.
I would like a dealer / manufacturer to say
‘ It is the …………………… making the noise and the reason it sounds like this is because…………………..’ so giving an explanation.
If they don’t know what is causing the noise, how can it be said that it is nothing to worry about ?
Do all 10s suffer with it ?
I’m in rracerfz10 boat here when he wrote “That’s why the “this Is normal” answer doesn’t sit well with me”.
There are number of vehicle cases where manufacturers have produced vehicles that they thought were bomb proof and they were found not to be. It happens. Sometimes faults come to light when vehicles are in use and not before.
Bottom line……… it’s nice to know rather than hope for the best.
