Hey all, Do any of you have any GPS trackers installed on your bikes / do you have any recommendations? A few criteria: - I don’t want it to kill my battery
- Ideally it should still work even if they unhook the battery
- Small enough to hide somewhere deep in the bike
My bikes are relatively safe at home (I live in the middle of nowhere and my garage has a dedicated security system for my bikes) but I commute into the downtown core of a semi-large city. I’m looking for a good solution for tracking the bike if it’s stolen.
Ive also got an FZ09 that came with a Gorilla system installed that I eventually had to disconnect as it was KILLING my battery. It caused it to start kinda weak and eventually drained it flat after a week or two of sitting off the charger. Thanks in advance for your input!

If bike theft in the US works like in the EU, once its taken you arent getting it back. Its driven far away and chopped into spare parts. Even if you know where it is its likely already getting taken apart, and the police cant get into wherever it is before they have gotten a warrant from the judge, so its gone sadly.
The best anti theft device in my opinion is a cover. It even protects your paint from the suns harmful UV. Doesnt matter if it isnt waterproof as its only on for relatively short periods of times so you might even find one that packs into a very small size.
Thieves are thieves because they are lazy. They wont go looking under the cover because 1. it looks very suspicious and takes more time for them (some of them you can even out a lock on on the bottom). 2. They will just go for another bike that they know what it is from blocks away, much quicker and easyer.
You cant outrun a bear, but you can outrun your friends to be safe.

I use that with a cover, by the time the thief gets the cover off the alarm will be blaring and I will receive a text message notifying me. I think that's a pretty good deterrent

Yes when the alarm goes off they will be running. Draws way too much attention.

I live in an apartment and have to leave my bike in front of my door which sucks. I use a cove, heavy duty cable lock that goes through the rear wheel and both passenger footpeg brackets and a Xenia disk lock with a built in alarm on the front disk. The Xenia disk lock alarm is a bit sensitive and goes off when it rains hard enough but I prefer that to not being sensitive enough.
A thief would either need to pick my bike up and carry it off, not very likely, or spend the time/have the tools to get through both locks before getting caught. The key is to make your bike more trouble than it’s worth.
Pick up an alarmed disk lock and if you can carry a kryptonite chain and lock and lock your rear wheel to something immovable and throw the disk lock on your front disk.

Sounds good, just want to add that most thieves who are looking to make money off of your bike will lift it into the back of a van. They use two boards with wheels on it if the bike is further away, lift the wheels on those boards, roll the bike to the van and lift it in. Its easy to do even with two guys who are a bit on the stronger side. Stealing a bike like you steal a car is stupid. Same amount of work, more visible and you make less money. Thats an ancient way of stealing a vehicle. If you really want to make it hard for the thieves, connect the lock to some sort of anchor point. To make it absolutley not worth the risk put it through the hole in the swingarm where the spring goes. They will need a good lockpick (they usually arent lockpicks anymore) or a blowtorch or an angle grinder if your chain is bulky enough.

With the correct tools i used to put parked cars on similar boards with wheels on each tire and roll them away like a shopping cart (on my job, not criminally). Took us less than a minute to get an unmovable SUV in park and handbrake on to roll around the ship like a shopping cart down the isles. A bike would propably take around 5 seconds from the time the thieves first touch the bike.

You guys give the common thief too much credit. 99% of them are thieves of opportunity. Yes if a career criminal wants your bike he’s going to get it. But that’s not the case in most circumstances. I’ve had a bike stolen. Luckily the idiot took it to the dealer I bought it from to have a key made and I got the bike back. Do what you can make your bike a pita and most garbage humans will move on to an easier bike.

Do what you can make your bike a pita and most garbage humans will move on to an easier bike. Making it hard to get (and covering it) will also deter most organized crime. Their rutine is to get the back of their van filled with bikes as quickly as possible and call it a day, they wont stay to look around under covers. Common bike thieves are a dying breed. Its so hard to get away with it nowadays. Sophisticated handlebar locks, immobilizers, security cameras etc makes it a much riskyer for much less payoff. Atleast where im from the police has automatic plate scanners which dings them when a plate comes back to having an expired inspection, expired insurance or most importantly has been reported stolen. Noone rides in a stolen vehicle for long. Even if the owner doesnt report it, he can never get its papers renewed or get it insured. When ots expired its done. Yohd have to run from the police every time you see them. Nor can you sell it without the paperwork. Organized crime in this area has however gone up due to the internet and specialized parts for bike models. The used parts market is huge, especially for 1000cc bikes. They will sell every piece of the bike that doesnt have a serial number on it. Personally im more worried about some drunk person accidentally tipping the bike over (again, a cover will deter these people) than a common thief stealing it. Its the organized crime im most scared of.

That being said im not sure what the case is in the US, maybe organized crime is lower for vehicle theft and the simple thieves are that simple that they steal bikes for themselves.
