I brought the clutch lever a little bit closer by adjusting the free play on it(very little) but i am wondering if i can lower the tension on the lever at all? It numbs my hand when i am at stop lights because of how hard i have to pull. I asked in another post and someone recommended shorty levers but again that would still have me pulling pretty hard

Span adjustable levers may help. Sadly the tension is down to the springs in the clutch. I've just change mine clutch pack and springs and its a little lighter at the lever but not by a massive amount. See if the pull lever (where the cable goes in to the holder at the clutch end) is lined up with the arrow. If not you may have some.adjautment there which could help by turning the pull lever on or back a notch or two.

I agree this bike needs an adjustable clutch lever. I wear a size large glove and it’s still a little too much of a reach for me. For a $13,000 bike I don’t get why we get the same lever as every other Yamaha. Hell even the R1 has the same lever.

Today i realized my hand/fingers may be building some muscle or something because it hurt alot less. My cluth lever has like less than a quarter an inch of free play (Correct me if im wrong but, Free play = how much the lever moves before i begin to feel resistance on the lever. IM not quite sure if im correct, this is just what i understood from the owners manual). Is there a downside to this? the tension is just as strong... its just a tiny bit closer to my hand so i feel resistance after about a quarter of an inch. Just dont want to hurt the motorcycle in any way by doing this.

As mrcdharwood said, adjusting the clutch free play will not change the tension. Clutch lever free play is the movement from full out until you feel resistance measured at the end of the lever. The spec is 5-10mm. Adjusting the free play will change how far from the bar that clutch disengagement and engagement occurs. Make sure you have at least 5mm of free play. This is to make sure that your clutch is fully engaged when the lever is released.
Changing levers won’t do anything about reducing the effort you have to put in. You could always try pulling closer to the end of the lever, it’ll be easier than choking up on the clutch lever. Get your clutch hand stronger.

Get your clutch hand stronger. Is that the same as keeping your pimp hand strong? Similar training techniques? 😜

Most people change the levers with more adjustability, ASV amd Pazzo are popular and high quality. Shorty levers are not your answer at all, shorter lever means less leverage. If I'm stuck at a red light with stopped cars behind me I put it in neutral, no need to sit there holding the lever in. It really sounds like you need a lever that is closer to the grip in operation, the stock lever doesn't have that much adjustability, after market levers do.

I never felt there was a problem with too much tension to pull the stock lever in but I didn't like the shape and how far you had to let the clutch out to engage, just didn't like the feel and was hard to do it smoothly. I got the ASV full size adjustable levers and they fixed the problem, clutch feels great now and much smoother.
