Hi all I have a 2017 MT10 SP, when I bought it from a local dealer it had 800miles on the clock, when I bought the bike I also bought extended warranty but to keep warranty the bike has to be serviced by them, so every time they serviced it they used motul semi synthetic in the engine, well my warranty has run out so I decided to service it myself new oil and filter, I decided to use silkolene pro4 fully synthetic, since changing to this the engine tick has 90% gone, I thought maybe I was a one off but I use the bike to commute to work so have used it 5 or 6 times since the change, and each time it's the same 90% better than it was, so just thought I would sheare my findings see if it works for anyone else.
Enjoy your tick free rides out.

Hey Tom, it is possible that your auto tensioner for the cam chain kicked in and tightened the cam chain.
Me from the other thread about manual cam chains:

Hi red
Yes it is very possible that the tensioner clicked onto the next position, the bike has always ticked since day bought it in 2017, like most people the tick annoyed me but wasn't too concerned after googling and seeing it was something that most of them do, so yes it could be a coincidence that it clicked on after I changed oil, or the oil change might have helped, either way it's quieter so thumbs up.
and I agree with you on the manual tensioner, as the chain slackens off if you have a manual tensioner and don't adjust it its gunna slip, or if you do adjust it and go too far your going to wear things out, Yamaha deffenatly knows more than me.

Ok cool, glad you were aware of what's going on. I'm sure the new oil doesn't hurt either! This thing with sportbikes ticking has become a pet peeve of mine. It is quite possibly the most misunderstood thing involving sportbikes. Like I'm trying to sell a bike right now and I have to try to explain this to people why my bike is ticking when it turns on, and you can see it in certain buyers faces that they are worried about the engine.
And the whole manual tensioner discussion kills me because the auto tensioner was specifically designed so people wouldn't have to go in and manually tension the cam chain!

Yes cheers, I know what you meen with the noisy engines, I've had two BMW S1000RR although they didn't tick the engines did sound very accricultral a bit like diesel tractor, the only bikes I've had that had quite engines we're the early Honda fire blades, CB1000R, don't know about the later ones. A mate of mine bought a brand new R1 back in 98 he took it back a few times for noisy engine, he was told not worrying about and only start to worry if there was NO noise. Anyway would be interesting to see if an oil change has any effect on anyone else's bike.
Cheers

I think lots of people are unaware that the fuel injectors themselves can create quite a racket too, especially since the sound can resonate in the cavity beneath the air box and the bottom of the fuel tank.

You stated that your dealer had been using semi-synthetic oil, Yamaha states that only full synthetic oil be used. The oil used may or may not have been related to the ticking, and if the weight of the oil was changed it could have an effect as well. Perhaps your dealer was just saving a few dollars every time it was changed, but he should have been aware of the engine's requirements.
