So, I know that in the 4-wheeled world, especially the diesel part, Exhaust Gas Temperatures are something to be careful of. I know it's used as an emissions tactic to continue the burn of unused fuel in the exhaust, but if taken too far raises the temperature in the cylinders, leading to meltdown.
I'm looking to have an exhaust (including headers) ceramic coated, mainly for aesthetic reasons, as I hate how crappy they look after a while. However, as I understand it, ceramic coating is often used as a way of insulating the headers to keep heat out of an engine bay and away from intercooler, fuel, and oil lines, etc.
Will that insulating factor cause a significant rise in EGTs for a bike? To the point where it might compromise reliability?
If so, is there a better option for blacking out the exhaust other than black ceramic coating?
Thanks!

I actually talked to my powder coater about this very subject a few weeks ago, He said the temperature rise inside the header is minimal with a Ceracoat (ceramic) coating, it's mainly cosmetic, and probably the best choice. He also said there are crappy brands of coating that don't last very long, he said Ceracoat gave him the best results. There is a small amount of heating, but not much, so I wouldn't worry about EGT's. With bikes the pipes are out in the open, so they cool pretty well. Now if you fiberglass wrap the exhaust, that will trap some heat inside, while cooling off the outside, like in an engine bay or turbo body. I wrapped the chambers on a old RD400 and it made a big difference were they traveled close underneath the engine.
He equated it like this: Ceracoat was like sleeping under a thin sheet, and the fiberglass wrap was like sleeping under a thick blanket.

I can’t speak to any of the technical specifics. I’ve had an AK-47 cerakoted, and it was a high quality finish that held up well, and they get very hot under sustained continual firing. A guy on a KTM forum I am on just had his brand new SDGT exhaust done by Jet Hot. Looks wise I think it turned out great. www.jet-hot.com/
