Hey gang, doing better than expected with chemo, so planning the next bike trip in May, and need input on rides in the Maryville area. We'll start with a 2-day advanced track course with Superbike School at Barber (did Laguna Seca last year, before Maggie Valley), on May 25 and 26, driving with bikes and trailer from Miami (I'll fly there from El Paso, TX). Then we'll drive to Maggie Valley, and ride the best roads there for 3 full days (27, 28, 29), including the dragon, the skyway, parkway, etc. I'd like to do 441 to Gatlinburg as a new route, but we'll see. Then we want to drive to Maryville, and do 3 more full days there, and that's where I need your input, since we've never been there.
The devil's triangle looks great, which starts at Oliver Springs, then 116, then Norma Rd all the way to 297, then head back down, and continue on 116 to Petros, then head back, and do the entire 116 again where we started (at Oliver Springs), then back to Maryville, so basically riding the entire route both ways, for a total of 175 miles and 5 hours flat. Does that sound good? Feel free to suggest any changes .
Then we don't know what to do the next 2 days, and that's where you come in. We want to do for sure the 'missing link' of the Foothills Parkway, but there are so many nice roads around that area, we need help choosing which ones with only 2 days left. All suggestions welcome . After that, we're heading to Traverse City, Michigan, and doing a final tour around the great lakes, then fly back to my crappy town, hopefully in 1 piece. Ha ha. Thank you gang. JC

I live in Maryville and the routes you mention are all good ones. Unless you like very slow bumper to bumper traffic I would suggest you delete Hwy 441 over the Smokies whether it be from Cherokee, NC to Gatlinburg or the opposite. It's a beautiful drive/ride but it will be clogged with tourists. I'm going to suggest one of my favorite rides that is a long day ride and it's away from the more popular ones such as the ones you suggest. To get to it you must travel on some very scenic but otherwise boring roads i.e. lots of straight flat stretches. From Maryville take US 411 south to Vonore, turn right on Hwy 72 and take it until it ends at Hwy 58. Turn left on 58 and take it to Decatur and turn right on Hwy 30. Take 30 to and thru Dayton and over the mountain which has some high speed sweepers as well as some twisties. As you come off the mountain you will be coming down into the Sequatchie Valley which is beautiful. As you come into Pikeville and just before the intersection with Hwy 127 you will see a small paved road on the left. It's called Lower East Valley Rd. Take it. It is a winding road thru scenic farm country and there isn't a lot of traffic. Maybe get off in the town of Dunlap and there come back north on Hwy 127 for just a few miles until you hit Hwy 111 and turn right. Hwy 111 is a 4 lane, limited access road and it takes you out of the valley back over to Hwy 27. Take 27 north to Dayton and from there you can take your pick as to how you want to get back to Maryville. All the other routes in your plans are good ones, the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway are must-do's. As for the Foothills Parkway I would suggest you do the part from Hwy 321 in Walland to where it ends at Hwy 129 (which becomes the Dragon) and Chilhowee Lake. Foothills Parkway from Hwy 321 to Wear's Valley (the new part) is boring and not very scenic and will have more traffic. Feel free to ask more questions.

Hey, thanks a million for that suggestion. Sounds awesome. But may I ask you (if you have time one of these days), which other routes you suggest for days 2 and 3? Remember we'll do the dragon, Cherohala, and some others from Maggie Valley, so we're free to do other new rides from Maryville. In one of those 2 days we need to obviously incorporate the Foothills section you mentioned, but it'd be awesome to have a suggested ride for the rest of the day . Thank you very much again for your help. Oh, and you're the second person to mention 441 to Gatlinburg to be an awful choice for a fun ride due to heavy traffic, so it's now discarded. I'll post the 3 rides from Maggie Valley when we have them, in case you have any change suggestions. One ride will be the 'dragon' one for sure, which we'll do 3 times (turning back, and the initial way again), then the Cherohala, but will post the entire routes for your review, if you don't mind . Thank you.

Watch out for cops on the dragon. They were shooting the radar last year we were there. My buddy’s got hit doing like 60 in a 30. They were lucky and got off with warning! Dragon not much fun riding 30

There is always the risk of state troopers and/or deputies on the Dragon but there are more days that they are not there than days that they are. Believe it or not the days that you are safest are the days when there is at least moderate motorcycle traffic. That way on coming bikes can give you the "head tap" warning. Don't look for HD riders to warn you however. Most warnings come from sportbike/sport touring riders. A lot of money comes into Blount County via motorcyclists on the Dragon and the county and state don't want to get the reputation of a speed trap. They do write a few tickets from time but it you're not riding recklessly you might get a warning for speeding. Just be careful and pay attention...especially pay attention.

Thank you. The section of Foothills Parkway between Hwy 321 and Hwy 129 can be incorporated into your Dragon ride or into the ride I suggested above (Sequatchie Valley). Another shorter ride than the Pikeville one (I highly recommend the ride above however) is to go south on Hwy 411 out of Maryville to Vonore. At the first traffic light turn left onto Hwy 360. Follow the 360 signs (you actually make 2 turns while still remaining on it) until you get to the Cherohala Skyway in Tellico Plains. By this time you will already have ridden the Skyway so you're not going to do it this time. As 360 hits the Skyway turn right. Go to the stop sign (Hwy 68) and turn right. In about a mile give or take Hwy 39 will be on your left - take it. You will be it for about 4 or 5 miles and you will come to Hwy 315 on your left - take it. You will be on 315 for quite a while and it ends at the intersection with Hwy 30 right after you cross the Hiwassee River. Turn right on Hwy 30. It follows the winding Hiwassee for several miles and ends on Hwy 411. At that point you can turn right and it will take you back to Maryville. If it's a Saturday or Sunday you can turn left on Hwy 411 and go for a couple of miles and will find the Chilhowee Gliderport on your right. They most likely will be flying and you might be able to get a 15 minute glider ride if you so desired. Hwy's 39/315/30 are winding and scenic - made for sportbikes. Just so we're clear since you seem to think the ride I suggested to the Sequatchie Valley was not for your extra 2 days you would be in Maryville - it is just that - a ride for your other 2 days in Maryville.

Thanks a lot for all the help. Greatly appreciated. Can't wait to start that trip. A good incentive to endure upcoming chemos .
