I picked up my K-Tech rear shock on Thursday. Friday night I get home with plans to change it out. When you look at it you think, it's only 2 screws. Then you start.....top screw comes off easy, then you look at the bottom and you realize that you have to take the 2 dog bones off to get to the bottom shock bolt. Still pretty easy. Now the shock is free. Try and get it out. NOPE.....no room....you gotta take the link off. Still easy just one more bolt. Now you have to get the pin out, back in the house to look at a parts diagram because the pin only comes out in 1 direction. Better have a rear stand and a jack or it's near impossible to align to put back together. 3 hours later I'm cleaning the garage. Does it seem possible that it would take 3 hours to take 2 bolts off and reinstall them? The only consolation was that it was twice as hard to take the same corresponding 2 bolts of my former FJ 09.
Right now I'm going out to breakfast with my GF and then ride the hell outta this thing and see how it is with new suspension, exhaust and reflash.

Hehe. Not laughing at you by no means.... but I know exactly what you mean. I went to a professional suspension tuner and after checking everything decided on a simple ohlins rear spring only.....easy peasy right!? NOPE...everything you described in your post is correct. What should have been a 10 minute removal had me practically sleeping in the car waiting while it was being done....he has done literally hundreds of bikes and couldn’t believe how much of a PITA this bike was... No pain no gain but come on Yamaha!! Lol

Had the same experience when I changed out my shock for a Penske. Unreal how much time & effort expended.

A couple of years ago I changed out the shock on my 07 R1. Watched all the video’s and read all the guides, still took me half a day,got there in the end. Fast forward to today and with my previous experience thought changing the shock on this bike would be a walk in the park. Sure enough, just like what you said,it took me the best part of half a day! I guess next time I’ll find it easier...

OP tell us you reinstalled that lower bolt the other way around, so that future servicing will be much easier?

I am happy with it but it won't be right until I get the front springs done. I'm 6'1" and 250 pounds and I think this bike is sprung for somewhere around a 185 pound rider. With the new shock on, it's too much weight on the front. It's at the shop right now so I'll be going over in a few days to do the setup and then really see how it is with both ends working together.

What spring rates are you running?

Yes. I called K-Tech and that's what they recommended.

You may want slightly stronger springs.
I have 10nm Ktech springs in the front.
Preload is 4 turns out from max.
I now no longer bottom out.
Rear is 10.25 spring and raised 10mm.
I weigh about 225 pounds.

I had it set up this morning by my suspension guy and it's good with the 10's. In fact he was a little concerned that I should have gone with 9.5. It was too cold to try it out for more than 15 minutes so I'm not going to know for the foreseeable future.

I was curious what similarly weighted people were running. I’m running a 1.05 kg/mm front (1.0 and 1.1) and a 575 lbs/in rear (close to 10kg/mm)

I haven’t tracked it yet but I’m 6’3 280 on the stock stuff and ride pretty hard (couple years of amateur racing and a control rider) and I would think stiffer in the front @250lbs but it’s all about the rider. If it’s never going on track, I’m sure it’d be fine for the novice/intermediate rider. Even some fast guys don’t brake super hard. The rear being extra stiff with our short wheelbase is just gonna loft the front easier/earlier.
I’m certainly not a suspension expert but had one at the track with me often and learned a little. Having 1.2’s on a street bike is gonna be pretty gnarly on the street with bumps and pot holes, etc. I have a zip tie on my fork leg and any type of hard twisty riding will send it to the bottom of the travel—but it’s certainly use-able and doesn’t chatter, etc. I’d love to ride your bike with the new setup and see the difference—I’m sure it’s massive!

It transforms the bike. I'm just an average rider but I ride a lot better on a bike with the suspension done. It's not one of those things where you have to be an expert level rider to tell the difference. It's apparent as soon as you ride it.
