Hi All,
We had a break in the the apartMent parKing lot and the thieves screwed up my lock with a broken key /piece of metal left in the ignition.
Now the dilemma I have is the workshop quoted $2.5K for the lock and key set due to the immobilizer etc in the key.
I hope that is not the case and there is a far cheaper option.
Just wanted to get some thoughts on this.
Model 2018 MT10SP Country Australia
Yes I have comprehensive insurance but I can't fathom the fact that 15% of the bikes retail value is in the lock..
I hope I'm not the only one with similar thoughts.
Regards,
K

WOW, that doesn't sound right. Have you checked with an alternate dealer?

Check overseas services? I did a quick google search and came up with this site. Shouldn't be too hard to do it yourself. The main question would be that if it will be cheaper than your deductible or not. bikedecoders.com/yamaha-motorcycle-key-programming/Good luck and let us know how it goes. I'm curious.

Well i guess that means the immobilizer works as you still have your bike.
I think the US model MTs dont have immobilizers. Maybe you can have one of those ordered and let your dealer install it. This all depends wether the immobilizer can be deactivated/taken off somehow.
For security concerns, take the kill switch from the sidestand and move it somewhere else. When you are parked, switch it and noone is going to get the bike going.

Update from the dealer 😲
Will cost approx AUD $4500 to get the lock and immobilizer replaced.
I am sure it is a rip off as it's an insurance claim as the bike costed $19990 on road.
I will challenge the dealer as this can't be 25% of the value of the bike including labour.
Seems I'm be looking for a new dealer / mechanic after this is fixed.
But I can't still fathom the cost as it was an attempted theFt and a piece of metal was snapped off inside the key tube / hole. This will impact my future premiums but it is what it is.
Genuinely awed by this 😑 and a note to myself will be to get quoted before the bike is sent for inspection.
I'll keep you posted with the final figure.

Is the lock where the piece of metal snapped of completely buggered?
a good lock smith may be able to get it it out.
I would try several locksmiths and if they can't ask them if they know someone that can.

Apparently there is only 1 assembly (lock and immobilizer) in the whole world the dealer told me, and that's sitting in Japan. If anyone orders this before I Then there will be a crisis.. 😂 the story just keeps getting weirder and weirder.
