i don't buy cheap chinese crap for my bikes.
I want a tad more sound - not for performance but for hearing what the bike is doing.
I traded my '17 1290SDR (fully setup) for a MT this weekend, and got a 250 mi shakedown ride in.
It's very different, and I'm at peace with the lower performance... but...
>>its so smooth and quiet it's hard to keep track of what gear/RPM range i'm in, based on feel and sound alone.....
>> I'm not after more power, it's enough (because it wheelies easy in any gear), but i need more SOUND to be close to what motor's doing.
//
Ideally a mid-pipe/cat delete, but sending ECU off is outside what i want to do (YESS warranty, etc), also heard that can be excessively loud.
--> whats the sweet spot - just adding a bit more sound. I dont' want some $150 chinese no-name muff.... but there's no reason to spend $700 on an Akra either.
//
Can i cat delete without ECU? I saw GYTR sells a mid-pipe... does this mean dealer can flash ECU and it run right?
//
should i disable the exhaust valve flapper for more sound?
i don't want it obnoxious, just a tad more.
thnx

Do what I did and find a used can for sale on here. I scored a Graves can for $250 and it really woke it up. I’ve heard a few decatted R1’s and they sound great but IMO are way to loud. Not what I was looking for

jacoby, did you disable the flapper valve, or leave that stock as well?

jacoby, did you disable the flapper valve, or leave that stock as well? I just swapped cans. In an out in 10 minutes. Much improved

Even at full price (which I paid), the Graves slip-on is still well worth it IMO. Sounds incredible. I removed the decal, and it basically looks OEM, like I wanted (but it has to be done before firing the engine). Quality is probably better than stock, and no springs or bands here, like others. Welcome to the family .

^^thanks, i scored a graves muff and a few other odds/ends from a forum member.
i'll try that for a while, and if sound/feel isn't enough, i'll go to the Hindle bundle from the forum support guy who does ecu mapping.

^^that's him - i have him in my inbox messages, so i know where to go when im' ready. I want to give it a real chance with just a slip on first...
i'm coming off a series of KTM 1290 Super Duke's (most recently a 17 curr-gen), which had $5k in upgrades or so.... so really i already made the decision that i don't need max power... I'm going for a smooth refined low-maintence but still fun (wheelies, etc) experience... stock bike had enough power and on-demand wheelies, just needed a little more sound.... Maybe i'll get bored and do it anyway in the spring... will see.
So far, have purchased: *muff *comfort seat *taller shield *pillion peg eliminator plates *rad guards *CRG arrow bar-end-mirrors (having OEM bar ends milled down to accept) *luggage rack *front fender extender

That’s a great question, some answers: I’ve had 3-4 SDR’s and just wanted a change. I’m approaching 50yrs and wanted a touch of “just turn key” reliability. I’ve owned both gen 1 and gen 2 FZ1’s and always had a soft spot. I wanted a crossplane engine bike for a long time but have never been interested in a “crotch rocket” (R1) due to torturous ergo’s. I bore easily and go thru a lot of bikes. ////// That about covers it. So far pretty happy. There’s a bit of an emotional gut punch I’m still dealing with after having let the more exotic and powerful SDR go, but I’m finding the MT up to the task. Just got back the 2Wdyno ecu this week. Shakedown this weekend.

Shakedown this weekend. Ah, makes sense. I'm the same, lots of great bikes to try out and at 52, I'm not as concerned with having the fastest bike, just one that works the best for me.
I had an '07 SD, loved it. Exotic, beautiful and it sounded amazing. But I also had two '07 FZ1's and an '08 R6 track bike. I always thought the Yamaha's were more confidence inspiring, handling wise. I wished Yamaha would combine the R6 and the FZ1 with a crossplane, then they did with the FZ-10. It did not disappoint.
I'm still a KTM fan, I've owned nine of them and there's three in the garage right now, Including an 1190 Adventure S.
Great time to be a motorcyclist.

So I wanted more sound for cheap too. I'm not really into spending $500-$1000 just for the bike to sound better. Slip on's are a waste of money IMO. Adding a mid pipe to remove cat requires tuning and usually makes the bike too loud anyways. So I tried just removing the muffler for a bit. It sounded pretty good. Then I started searching for a tip to put on there. Ended up taking a shot in the dark and buying a powder coated matte black exhaust tip for a truck!!!! LOLOLOL $22 on Amazon and it even has a little baffling. It sounds freaking perfect!!!! Loud without being too loud and does not require a tune. I am a happy camper right now.

Ha did kinda the same. Got a prorace tip. You can definitely alter the sound with just a tip. Do have to say would love to hear the cp noise without the cat box but I'm sure its loud.

I did the same a while ago... posted pics etc. No one really seemed to comment and have all gone the other routes. I am super happy as well with the sound. Did a little modification to keep the stock cover to hide the tip clamps.... guys.... if you want sound but not willing to spend $$ or tune etc.... this seriously is a great mod to start with. I also love the burbles on deceleration.... borderline addicting. Lol cheers. no 1d5

What size should I look for when ordering a muffler to fit the OEM linkpipe? is it 51mm?
