Poked around and I couldn't find any info, so I suspect the answer is no - but does our ignition key have any sort of security built in? About to head out on a trip and would love a backup key in my wallet just in case. Curious if I can just get one cut at the hardware store, or if i would have needed to plan this out further. Don't really want to take my only extra along with me.
Thanks!

If you have US model they aren't chipped so they can be easily copied. Not sure if the blank key is a standard item or something unique to Yamaha.

Yep, US model, so that's good news. Thanks for confirming.

I'm thinking of doing that too, but would like a stock-looking duplicate. Guess we can buy Yamaha blanks, and then just have it duplicated at a Home Depot or something like that, right? Does anybody know the Yamaha blank p/n by any chance? There're several different ones that look the same, hence my question. Hey Redshlrt, please post what you ended up getting. Thx.

Go on eBay and get a blank key and have it cut at your local hardware store. They have different colors and styles to pic from

There are vendors on eBay who will also cut the key if you give them your key code. Your Yamaha dealer can order a key, too, just give them your code that came on the aluminum tag.

Just a tip to everyone. Often your local safe and lock business can do this. I was shocked when I went into our local business and he had a key blank for my 1974 Yamaha RD 350. He mentioned that he had blanks for many makes and models and I trust the cutting skills of these people way more than any hardware or home type store employee.

The locksmith I visited has the generic Illco brand key (without the black plastic). I ordered a set of OEM Yamaha blanks and they were able to cut them without issue.
