I recently decided on new rubber mainly because I caught a staple in my rear tire, so I was speaking with my parts guys that I really like at the dealer and they have always steered me in the right direction. After going over some info we looked at the new Michelin Five's.
They no longer call them "Pilots" but they are listed under that if you search. All I can say in the short time I've had these on is wow! never have I had a tire like these before. Grip in wet like you can't believe, and according to other thrird party reviews have amazing tread life due to the dual compound designs.
They were not the cheapest set of tires I've ever bought but they are definitely the best I've been on in fifty years.

I run Dunlop Roadsmart 3 tires, great performance and mileage, also dual compound construction. Any time you put new hoops on you will get a perceived increase in performance because they have new tread and have a nice, perfect profile, plus they have been freshly balanced.

Yeah I agree, I don't judge a tire until I have a few thousand on it. If you do any sort of commuting on them you'll get to see how they hold profile.

If you are about to need a rear and the front still has a lot of life do you guys swap the front too so you dont have 2 different brand tires?

I always replace both at the same time, regardless of condition. Rubber deteriorates with age, AND heat cycles, so even if the front looks new, performance would be mismatched with a new rear. Since I like to tackle the twisties aggressively, it's not worth the risk to me. Therefore, what I do is run the front at 33 psi, which gives me better grip, and therefore wears more, almost wearing out at the sides when the rear is toast at the center, so that works for me. What is absolutely a no-no is mixing brands. Remember motorcycle tires are designed as a PAIR, so that practice can even be dangerous, especially in the rain. So either get the same tire, or change both.

If the front has only been on for 1 season, i only change rear. If the rear tire has lated more than one season, both. Then again i do move the bike around a lot during winter storage so deterioration decreases a bit. Else, whats said above. Never ever change one tire to a different brand or even a different model. You want equal performance and drawbacks on both. Here is an extreme example on what two different tires do (on a car, but rubber acts the same wether there are two or four tires)

As a follow up on these tires, like I said earlier I could tell these were far above and beyond many I've had in the past. The service guy when he came back from a "test ride" gets off my bike and the first thing he says to me is "Man that's the first time I've ridden something with those tires, those are INCREDIBLE, wow"......And went on to tell me his comments on what he did. So yes the Michelin Five's are really above and beyond what I've been used to now that we have some miles on them.

I can second that opinion of the Michelin Pilot road tires I have used these tires ever since they had Pilot road 2 then 3 then 4 and now the 5's. I used them in the past on my FJR1300 and they are amazing and last an incredible long time. The way my FJR was outfitted it was a heavy bike and that did not matter they still preformed great. I put 13000 miles on a set when I did the Iron Butt Rally as I rode 11000 in 11 days. I also used the Pilot road tires on my FZ8 which I had just before upgrading to the FZ10. I just put on a fresh set before heading to Austin TX for the MOTOGP races and put on about 3000 miles and the 5's are as good or better than the past versions. I've tried a few others like Pirelli Angels but always go back to the Michelin
I always change both tires when the rear wears out. I do about 2 tire changes per season and just believe it's well worth it to do both at the same time. Saving $150.00 is just not worth it.

The fives may be a bit more then some others but one they will last longer and two when it's just you and two relatively small contact patches between you and the ground I'll gladly pay a bit extra for good tires.

I've had good success with Dunlop Roadsmart tires, but I think I'll give the 5's a chance when I replace the tires in a month or so.

Sounds like i have to get on the hype train too. I hade some pilots on my fz-07 (not sure which ones though, maybe 4?) and i did really enjoy them. Currently still on factory bridgestones, except the rear was changed at 5,6k miles. Wont be able to do much riding this year due to the drafts, but i guess ill see what you guys have to report on them until the next change
