Hey gang, have several questions that weren't answered, so figured I'd give it a shot to start my own thread, instead of hijacking the 2018 started by somebody else. He he. Here it goes: 1. Can't find an FZ-10 comfort seat anymore. Only an MT-10. Are they identical? By the way, my stock seat rubs exactly at the same place than the comfort ones. It's probably the same crappy base. In addition, my seat came without one of the front rubber bumpers. After transferring one from the rear, found out why. It's a PITA to slide forward. After lubing them, and forcing the seat up at the sides, it slides in without much trouble now. 2. Found the EvoTech grilles for $160 at Amazon, and identical ones with 'FZ-10' engraved for $110. Both aluminum. Has anybody bought those? They seem identical. Wonder if they fit the same. What I didn't like is having FZ-10 grilles and MT-10 seat. Ha ha. 3. Our bikes have TWO different rear spool locations. Never seen that before. Which is better to use: in front, or behind the rear axle? Thanks. 4. Ended up ordering the Vagabond F.E. Noticed most folks mount the plate as is, meaning the rubber bumpers increase the already steep angle of the plate. I plan to put spacers behind the top location, so my plate should be the opposite. Hope that solves the only issue I found with it (too boy-racer). Even with one spacer, it should be like the Yoshi. With two, even better. We'll see . 5. Ordered the full set of Shogun sliders, except the handlebar ones (back-ordered). I like they're completely sleathy, with no logos. Will also remove the Graves logo from the slip-on, for an OEM look. At any rate, does anybody have the factory torque for the engine bolts? And any 'gotchas' when installing them? Do I need to jack up the motor, or just replacing one at a time makes it unnecessary? That's it for now. Just ordered over $1,200 of crap... and still have to order 2 stands, chock, ramps, levers, cover, etc. Geez. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. JC

1. I don't believe they are the same. My comfort seat says "FZ-10" on it.
3. I would use the more forward one. It should better support the bike since that mount is in front of the rear axle. I feel that would better support the bike and prevent tipping over.
5. Torque values will be in the service manual. That's usually a bolt I hit with Red locktite as well but I'm not even sure if that works. That location might be too high temp for standard locktite. Just something I do.
I would definitely only do one side at a time to prevent the engine from dipping out of line with the frame. As long as you're quick about the swap and don't let the engine start to settle out of the frame, usually you don't need to jack up the engine. But if you're having a tough time getting the bolt in or out, I would use a jack to prevent crossthreading.

Using the front spool point also will lift the rear tire a little bit higher than the rear point, I use a Pitbull forward handle stand and the rear tire just clears the bottom support brace when the bike is lifted with the stand supports set at their lowest spot on the stand (maximum stability). Only disadvantage I see is you get less leverage with the forward holes when lifting the bike, not an issue unless you are very weak.

I have a Yamaha FZ-10 comfort seat on a 2018 MT-10. I'd imagine the reverse would work as well.

Yeah, might have no option but to buy an MT seat. Not even Yamaha has the seat available anymore. Will look into that next week, along with the quick shifter. Would still like to know if a 2017 doesn’t object to clutchless upshifts when releasing the throttle with a QS installed. Or a 2018, which has it standard.
Finally, the reason for this post. Do I need to install engine case protectors with Shogun frame/swingarm/fork sliders? Prefer not having to install them, since they’re the ugliest. But if they’re still necessary, would probably buy the GBs, which are the least ugly. The Shogun sliders are quite long, so hopefully enough protection with the axle ones. Thx.

As many have said, the QS feels cleanest when you're hard on the throttle and high in the revs. You can use it when you're off the throttle, but it sort of defeats the purpose.
You don't 'have' to install case covers or sliders. I did drop my bike in my garage before I put case sliders on, and there was absolutely no damage to anything because my slider took the full impact. That said, you don't know what will happen in any given drop.

Good to hear about the frame sliders offering protection at least with a low-speed drop. That’s good enough for me. Thanks.
On the shifting, I can’t seem to be able to explain what I do. At slow acceleration, I do normal shifts but without using the clutch, meaning hitting the shift lever at the moment throttle is closed. Shifts are seamless. At high acceleration, that’s when I use the QS. As you all know, the QS doesn’t like to shift at low accelerations/speeds. That’s when shifting normally without the clutch is best. Although I have to say, this cable clutch (my first) is awesome. No lag at all when shifting, like is always the case with hydraulic ones.

Juat came back from a second ride, which took mileage from 8 to 27. It was awesome to finally be able to ride the bike without ear plugs (no turbulence from windscreens). Before, even at less than 40 mph noise was deafening without plugs. Today, even at 70 it was perfectly tolerable for a few miles, but obviously need plugs for any kind of trip, or over a few miles of freeway. I wanted to do that to listen to all noises, and be aware of them. First of all, with the Graves slip-on, the engine sounds absolutely fantastic. Very deep, just the way I like it. Better than the Aprilia V4s I've heard. Very similar, but more sophisticated, due to the even firing. Just incredible. But now on the 'bad' news. I clearly heard a noise I read about before when shifting to 6th gear, especially below 5K rpm. Glad to know I'm not the only one, but wonder what the heck it is. It doesn't make it in any other gear. Not a worrisome noise by any means, but just wondering what is it. Does it get better after break-in? Hopefully just a break-in issue. Now to a second noise I like even less. Ha ha. The chain tensioner (or rather, the chain) was making a lot more noise than I like to hear. I don't think this will go away with break-in, but what about after an oil change? What kind of oil is in there? Sometimes manufacturers use thinner oil for break-in. Hope that's the issue now. All comments welcome. Other than that, what a fantastic machine. Clutch (my first cable one), is just perfect. I was doing perfect throttle blips right off the bat. Throttle is just perfect in 'std' mode too; reacts instantly to blips, and at the perfect revs, so will leave it at that setting all the time. Clutch also disengages instantly, unlike the hydraulic units that have a fraction of a second to disengage. Very annoying. No need to upshift without the clutch with this machine. And with the suspension changes I made, it's just about perfect. Couldn't be happier. Hope to be able to take it to the mountains tomorrow, for a 300-mile ride, and see what else comes up, like vibration issues, knee, etc.

Hey guys, wanted to post pictures of my progress with the bike. Guess you'll notice that, but I like my modifications to look factory, meaning great fit, function, and looks (although not always can have all of that), including no freaking aftermarket brand decals. So far it has a Graves slip-on (best mod; sounds fantastic), Vagabond tail tidy, full set of Shogun sliders (swingarm, front axle, and frame), black radiator grille set, Ogio tail bag (removed stock seat wart and strap, while I get another one), Grab-on MC-401 foam grips. I think that's it. Have the GYTR QS and Pazzo (black with red adapters) on the way, Just have the seat left at this point. And need to order stands, chock, ramps, and make a platform for my truck (to haul the bike). This site was a lot of help for most of the mods (thank you , except the grips, which I'm glad to contribute for those who like a precise fit. He he. Will post final pictures with levers and QS installed. I'll be done then. I'm surprised the mirrors are usable for me after widespread condemnation (ha ha), so will leave them alone. Not a fan of the look on the barend mirrors, but that's just me. And wouldn't be able to do that until my house is built, since I'm living in a rental now, and the bike barely fits thru the front door as is (mirrors folded). By the way, Yamaha lists width as 31.5", but that's barend to barend, without mirrors. So far nothing I have installed has any decals, so awesome. I don't know if the Pazzo levers will have any (hope not), but if they do, will try to remove them, or black them out to mask it. Also removed passenger pegs and used Dorman 963-056 plugs (they fit too well), removed all decals (except the VIN one), and all reflectors too.

Hey gang, didn't know where to post this, so came back here. Went for my 3rd ride on my new bike today, and wanted to post some comments and questions. Mileage went up from 28 to 38 (yeeeey). Basically wanted to make sure my radiator screen wasn't going to touch the finned area when hot, check out the new foam grips, test the new QS, and also confirm the shift lever was at the same position (it was). Here are my comments and questions: 1. The first 2 shifts with the QS were awful. I probably didn't activate the QS, and ended up banging the gears. Heard a bang/crunch and bike lurched forward. Have never tried upshifting like a QS without one, but I'm almost sure that's what it'd sound and feel like. Anyway, I wasn't accelerating hard, but not too leisurely either. Previous QSs would have shifted much better. Would that cause any damage??? Hope not. At any rate, tried accelerating harder and shifting at higher rpm, and it shifted like butter, so QS is working properly (and of course the QS is showing on the dash). Guess this QS needs more pressure than others. And that's probably why I needed to basically shove the shifter up before the ECU activated the QS yesterday. All my previous QSs didn't like shifting at anything less than hard acceleration and higher rpm, so guess this one is the same. I'm probably going to leave the QS only for hard acceleration, and at higher rpm, to make sure they're smooth. Don't want to wear out my tranny prematurely. Hope Yamaha built our tranny robustly enough that those 2 abrupt gear changes didn't cause any damage. 2. I'm very happy that this bike is the only one with a QS that likes upshifting without the clutch but closing the throttle, like I did before installing the QS. So I now have the best of both worlds: I can now make clutchless upshits with or without closing the throttle . And that probably explains #1. This QS needs higher pressure, so with the relatively slight pressure needed for clutchless upshifts closing the throttle, the QS doesn't detect it, and doesn't cut power or anything. That's great, but that also means I definitely have to shift more positively when using the QS, to make sure I don't accidentally force an upshift without cutting engine power via the QS. Maybe I'm wrong, but since every QS I've ever owned doesn't like shifts at lower throttle openings or rpm, but not going to try them anymore. Comments welcome, but rather wear the clutch a litle more by using it, rather than having abrupt clutchless QS upshifts, right? 3. Good news with my grilles. The gap remained at the 1.5 to 3mm when hot, and now I know why. Checked it with a magnet after it was cooled to the touch with the engine coolant at 220ºF. And confirmed the thing is aluminum, just like the Evotechs. But it's very thick and sturdy, which is great news. Glad I was able to make it fit properly, since I like them better than the Evotechs... but if I was going to do it all over again, I'd buy the Evotechs just to avoid the time it took me to fit them properly. You definitely don't want any grille touching the finned area of the radiators. Fortunately, the oil one fits perfectly, and doesn't touch anywhere except the 3 mounting points. The radiator one fits perfectly too, but doesn't come shaped perfectly. Had to bend it left and right everywhere until it seemed to fit properly. But still managed to change shape when installed, so had to mess with the play at the 4 mounting points (pulling or pushing a little) until it cleared the finned area all around. 4. Now to the best news of my ride. Noticed the cam chain/tensioner wasn't noisy anymore. In fact, my valvetrain in general is probably as quiet as any other bike I've owned. AWESOME. Don't know what happened. Maybe when I accelerated harder thru the gears for the first time. Who knows. Bike sat for over a year after factory fired it up. Maybe something was partially clogged. Anyway, I was maybe expecting a change after the 600-mile oil change, not now. But very happy it now sounds like the awesome machine it is. That was the only slight disappointment I had with the bike. Couldn't be happier now. To finish, I took a short video of my exhaust that will upload and post later on. But it does it no justice whatsoever. It sounds amazing, especially when trolling around at 3K rpm. It's super deep and throaty. You can even feel it reverberate on cars and houses. And it's much louder and deeper than the crappy iPhone speakers pick up. That's my favorite mod for sure. Only have left the Pazzo levers to install when I get them next week. And only left to order the seat. Will probably order the MT-10, since the FZ-10 seems to be discontinued by now. They're the same thing, after all; just different letters. Need to research again the stands, chock, and ramps for my truck. Thank you for all your help and input.
