Well I just returned from my California to Florida ride on my new MT10.
Picked up the bike and drove to Palm Springs for my first oil change and chain adjustment. The Yamaha dealer in Palm Springs, California took excellent care of me and I would highly recommend them. If I lived there I would consider myself lucky to have such a great dealer.
When I bought the bike I was really worried about fuel mileage. I bought a gas can an carried it in the tail bag after hearing of poor mileage. By the time I got to Pheonix the gas can was given to a friend. No need. Most riding was freeway at 80 mph and my average for the total trip was 39.8 mpg. Needless to say, my rear end got tired before I needed fuel.
The cruise control is a fantastic feature and is probably responsible for the great mileage.
This is an awesome sport touring bike. I added the yamaha semi soft panniers and a nelson riggs large tail bag. Since I did not need the fuel can, the panniers would have been enough for me.
The other accessory I purchased was a sliicone seat pad from Cycle Gear. I believe it is the large size. It was wonderful. The pad is kind of sticky on the bottom side and does not move once placed on the seat. For the short trips the stock seat with no pad will probably be fine. If not I will buy an accessory seat and add the pad for very long rides.
This motorcycle is awesome fun to ride and made the long trek a great experience. If you are looking for a "sport" touring bike it will be a tough bike to beat at any price.
A touring bike with explosive managable power and handling. What a tremendous value.

I imagine you came over on I-10 if you came through Phoenix. One of the most boring roads I've ever driven is I-10 from Houston through the FL panhandle, generally poor roads and mindless 850 miles of flat, non descript road, especially that part over the Atchafalaya swamp. I've done it a half dozen times in a car, hate it. You said your journey was 2,930 miles, that must have been a one way gig because it is well over 2,500 miles from CA to FL, depending on where you start and end. Glad the machine performed well for you. There is always plenty of fuel on the interstates, even through AZ, NM and west TX.
