I'm trying to install my quarter turn gas cap and I feel pretty dumb right now. This thread fz10.org/thread/670/twm-quick-action-fuel-installationhas is a comprehensive writeup and everything is intuitive except one thing: If I lock the tank and remove the fasteners on top, the gas cap is latched into the tank and I can't pull it out. If I pull the gas cap out with the key in it, I can't get the key to come out even when compressing the spring loaded mechanism that seals the tank and pops the key forward. I'm squeezing it just about as hard as I can. Am I just not pulling hard enough when the cap is latched in the tank? am I not compressing the springs in the sealing mechanism enough? I am guessing someone else has figured this out as caps must be a popular mod given this bike's mileage.

You might have to release the tension on the cap as well. Meaning push down on the key as you give the spring. COunterpressure. Just like you would when the tank is on.
Just a wild guess.

I have tried to turn it, and I've compressed the springs anf had my gfgapply pressure and try to turn ot. When the cap is on the bike and the springs compress, the key will pop to the forward position and come out without any effort. I don't close the tank that way because someone said you shouldn't when I started riding.
I don't know if there's some switch I'm missing or what.
I have this video if a visual aid helps.

Can you tape the door jam to the open position similar to how if you tape a regular door jam on a regular door, you can close the door put it won't lock into the frame?
Once again, just a wild guess. I've never dealt with removing a gas cap before.

I got mine out when I replaced my cap, but I can't exactly remember how I did it. I'm useless today.

Ok...I'm not totally useless today.
I went out in the garage and stuck my key in the OEM gas cap and tried to get it back out.
Your on the right track. The seal is the "key" to removing the key. It must be pressed all the way down equally around. Then the key can be turned and removed.

Thanks guys. I took it off and my gf was able yo turn the key after I compressed the springs again. I don't know why it took so many attempts. I do think duct tape could be used to tape the locking mechanism back as well.

I couldn't get that trick to work....so I just stuck it in the spare tank and pulled it out. Everyone has a spare tank, right?
