Just a question I have. I always perform my own oil changes for fear of some hack at the dealer stripping my drain bolt etc. I just picked up my MT 10 two days ago and the dealer informed me my warranty would be void if they did not perform the first service. I'm still waiting on Yamaha Canada to clarify the issue. What is the real answer. Thank you for any help.

Read your manual and other paperwork. Generally it is not required for a dealer to do the service to maintain coverage. Maybe it is a Canadian quirk.

I bought my FZ10 from a non Yamaha dealer, because i have an excellent relationship with them, and they give me great deals and great service. Its my first Yamaha. In my limited experience dealing with Canadian Yamaha dealers since owning the bike, i've found them to be generally pretty shit. Way overpriced and marked up products, poor level of customer service, i'm really not impressed. I've owned lots of euro (Ducati, BMW) bikes and they had no problem with me doing my own services, as long as i kept a record of everything, and was open about it. Yamaha was a right dick to me when i even tried to buy the Yamalube oil change kit from them to change my oil. Unimpressed.

that is just scare tactics IMO, they do the same here in chicago(when i first bought my R6 i did it) but learned its not true, they just trying to get themselves business, best way to be sure is to have them give you a document in writing stating that. Chances are they wont be able to produce it, the dealer i purchased the mt10 told me about the service, but knows i do a lot of my own work, he didnt mention anything of the sort, he did mention that yamaha will give a 100k warranty on the motor if i use yamalube though.

As long as you have receipts and documentation proving the oil and filter are within spec you should be Ok, I always do my own servicing.

a dealership cannot void the manufacture warranty. it is up to Yamaha weather or not stuff gets warrantied out or not. the dealer just sends in the request for it and has little say in what is covered but can influence one way or another. only the manufacture can void a warranty.
