4,500 just put a new rear tire michelen road 5s. Felt great when breaking them in! A little less grip than the stock but nothing horrible. Hoping to get way more milage out of these.

I've got under 5k...I alternate between my bad ass 09' FZ1 and the new kid on the block to keep the miles low on both. I will say that I'm not worried about mileage on the FZ1...a gal on the FZ10A forum has over 300,000 on a stock motor...never rebuilt. These suckers can rack the miles up...I hope the FZ10 is just as reliable. Oh...my 09' FZ1 only has 9k. Who's from the bay area in California? Who's also on barf? (Bay Area Riders Forum) Trying to get some FZ rides together.

I'm in the Bay Area, but not on BARF. I'd be glad to join an FZ ride!I'll add you to my follow list and send you a pm to exchange contact info. Cheers! Hey FZ10minesrdripper, question for you, since you're the perfect candidate : How does the cross-plane crank FZ10 engine compare to the 'normal' FZ1 in smoothness and power delivery? Since the FZ10 was neutered for the US market, it should be almost identical in power to the FZ1, but wondering if all the hoopla about the cross-plane engine is really noticeable or not, especially if it's smoother than an inherently vibey I-4, and if it also delivers more torque down low than a normal I-4. I wanted to stay away from I-4s due to their high-frequency vibes putting my hands to sleep readily now that I'm in my 50s, but if the FZ-10 is indeed noticeably smoother, that's the bike I want. Don't want to make another $10K+ mistake if I can avoid it . Many thanks brother.

You need to get one...I'm glad I did.
I've got my 09' set up so well and it's hopped up pretty good too...it's almost not fair to compare them for back road serious canyon carving...because the FZ10 has some issues I didn't like when I first rode it. I thought I was going to get on it and just kick ass...this wasn't the case. I'm used to the throttle on my FZ1...it's not so easy to turn and it's not so touchy. Anyway, With the suspension beating the crap out of me...touchy throttle...ultra wide bars(compared to the clip-ons on my FZ1)...it was just a little bit of a disappointment at first. So knowing that Yamaha makes kick ass bikes and that it was set up ultra stiff I think (I haven't messed with anything yet) by the previous owner. So here's where it starts getting good...I knew I could make the FZ10 better than my FZ1...it just needed some quality parts, geometry changes and maybe send the ecu back to 2wheel.
So I had a trackday coming up and I'm just not ready to take the FZ10 out for a serious flogging, so the trusty FZ1 gets the call and gets the job done...spanks almost every bike in the advanced group at Sonoma Raceway. Unfortunately there was an incident with a R1M going into turn 7...I couldn't avoid the rookie and hit him at about 67 mph...he was going about 45 mph...it was a pretty big collision...bent my axle, both clip-ons were pushed forward etc. I saved it and didn't crash...my awesome day was over...the point of telling you this is I wasn't able to take my track prepped FZ1 on a fast paced group ride to Lake Berryessa with some crazy fast guys...some running full slicks. I didn't want to miss the ride and I felt okay...minus a sore thumb...so I load up the FZ10 and head to the meeting spot to unload my bike and take a ride with these guys.
I knew I wasn't in love with the FZ10 yet...so I 'm just going to try and avoid bumps and not get the hell beaten out of my back and just run a steady pace. No...not me...I find myself pushing the bike and harassing the front running guys big time. The bike felt a little better...still has a ways to go, but I was having fun...lots of fun. The fast guy on slick shod Ducati was behind be and said I was leaving huge black mark out of all the curves...fast turns too. After the ride I realized just how good this bike is in it's current configuration. The motor is a absolute gem...so smooth. The bike has huge potential...I'm going to explore that potential. I'll do a nice write up with pictures of all the mods I've got in the garage right now. This son of a bitch is gonna be so bad to the bone when I'm done. Love it, Love it, Love it

Ditto! I recently rode a well set up S1000R around for most of a day, and I still preferred my FZ over the BMW for the engine alone!

If you got 4500 miles out of a S20...that's pretty good. I personally don't worry much about mileage...because I only use race take offs from friends or guys selling them with good tread still left. It's surprising how many people sell track tires...dots or slicks...way before the tread is used up. I'm getting tires free sometimes that have 2/3rds to 3/4ths rubber left. I had a MotoAmerica qualifying(red stripe) slick I got for free...had it mounted for $15.00 just to see what life I could get out of it. Took it easy...warmed it up and had some fun and a back canyon road. I was running a decent pace and of course it had plenty of grip. Being a medium qualifier tire I thought it would be toast in a hundred miles or less. It had 1100 miles on it when I pulled the rim of for a trackday. I'm going to remount it and run it to the cords. Free tire...$15.00 mount...I love a good deal. Keep in mind...this isn't recommended for most street rider, but I've been doing this for the last 7 years. I got 4000 miles out of a Dunlop GP211 190/60/17 and I bought it used. Obviously I don't ride in the rain or super cold weather.

I got just over 5k miles on my 18 MT. Got it in January. I've put about 12k on my FJR this year, probably be between 20-25k miles between the 2 bikes before winter.

That was an awesome review dripper; many thanks. Also very glad to hear the FZ is actually better than the S1000R, which I was thinking about, as a previous BMW owner (multiple bikes). I have zero doubt now that it's the bike for me. I talked to the local dealer today, as a matter of fact, and they still don't want to sell it for 10 grand (plus TTL), but they might at the end of the month. I'm in the middle of mmoving, then traveling next week, so couldn't buy it now even if I wanted to. Hopefully at the end of the month, so I can still take it for a shake-down ride to the TX Hill Country, before it gets too cold. Thanks again for your awesome help folks. Hope to become part of the family soon.
