First I have to give a huge thanks to Cruizin for setting this up as well as Nels and Pat at 2 Wheel Dyno Works for taking the time to do this. It was a great experience as I have never had a bike Dyno tuned and have never been a part of the process. It was a blast. We learned a lot about the bike and Nels worked his magic as always to provide a fantastic addition to this bike. First thing when I showed up we got the bike right on the dyno and did some baseline runs. First thing to note was how easy the ECU was to access versus many other bikes. Took all of one minute to get full access to. We did the few baseline runs and could immediately see the throttle limitations Yamaha placed below 6,000RPM and above 10,000RPM. It seems this was the big difference between the Euro bikes and the US bikes. The bike made right around 133hp and 74ft-lbs. Next Nels flashed the unrestricted map and we ran it again. This seemed to immediately add the power back in the bottom as well as on top resulting in 144hp. Once Nels dove deeper into the map though he noted it LOOKED as if they replaced the ignition map in the lower RPM range with the one from an R1... From this point Nels disabled all the junk (I will let him detail out all the specifics) and began his custom tune. He was very meticulous and very professional. It was great to see my bike in such awesome hands. One thing to note was after disabling the O2 sensors in the flash they still seemed to be messing with AFR while he was tuning. He said he has seen this before so we removed the O2 sensors completely and ran some more. All the issues were fixed. We ended up at around 144hp and the curves looked much better. At this point we were very pleased and we rode it around the parking lot some and right away the smoothness of the throttle was apparent versus stock. This was my biggest gripe on my bike. Then we started looking around and he said he had a Hindle exhaust which he loves for the R1 and I said "you know, I hear the R1 stuff should fit with a little modification!" He was as excited as me and we began tearing my bike apart. Now the sound is amazing, fit is not bad at all I just need to make a slightly different bracket link for the muffler mount but we went back to the dyno. This is where we made a big discovery. The first run looked very similar numbers-wise to our best stock run and we both were surprised. After further discussion we THINK the stock cat is designed so similar to the R1 that it actually is over designed for the FZ-10 and does not seem to be a huge restriction. Granted, eliminating it has other great benefits like weight savings and heat reduction but the numbers didn't shoot up like we expected. That was only part of the story though. Right away we noticed the large fireballs the bike was shooting and again in came Nels' wisdom. He said he has also seen this before where in the ECU the AIS is disabled but the valve cannot actually hold itself shut correctly. We wanted to do the block off plates but it was getting late so we just plugged the airbox line for now and away went the fireballs. The tuning continued and man does the bike sound like an absolute beast now with the Hindle system! Here is our final run tuned for exhaust versus bone stock. The gains are obviously across the board but the big thing going to the open exhaust was the addition 5-6hp we picked up in the 5-6000RPM range. Again there were gains on top as well but the low end benefited the most. My experience was fantastic and now I need to put in time on the bike to really evaluate if we need to do any tweaking. It was late last night on my ride home and Seattle traffic was as bad as always but I can tell you, it is a complete animal now. No dips in power, constant pull, the throttle is soooo much smoother...so smooth I can even ride in B Mode now which was not he case before. The bike runs amazing, sounds amazing and I eliminated a bunch of junk that I no longer need so weight savings is always nice. I will be reporting back and hopefully getting some good riding videos as long as our weather stays decent. I cannot recommend 2wheeldynoworks enough, all the guys there are great and I will definitely be going back as a return customer beyond the ECU flashing!

This is awesome! Glad an ECU flash is on the way. I had my FZ 07 flashed and man did it make a huge difference... Can only imagine how this one is going to be!

I did end up buying the Hindle as I loved the sound and it would have been too painful to take it all off and go back to stock haha. I think Hindle will be making their FZ-10 specific setup very soon but I liked the way it turned out on my bike and was not sure if they will go with a shorter setup specific for the -10. The added length, or similar to stock, gives me the best bet for not being too annoyingly loud. For the price of the Hindle plus the look I am stoked. Nels says it is his go to for the R1 as it makes the same hp as the akra for a fraction of the cost.

Did you happen to weigh all the crap you removed? It would interesting to know the weight savings.
Any noticeable difference in running temps or heat coming off the cat?

I didn't even ask if they had a scale there. My parts are all in a box at Nels' shop since I couldn't carry them home on my back haha. I will weigh it all once I pick it up. After feeling the cat though it has to be substantial. As far as heat it is hard to say. I rode home late at night so it was definitely cool out. Also he lowered the fan temp to 200 I believe so I imagine everything combined will certainly mean a cooler bike. I will report back on that.

When I yanked the heavy exhaust from the fz-09 it was an 9 lb savings and that is like more hp on a bike. Your bike will suprise a ton of sportbikes, looking at the curve you picked up some serious top end pull too!

I heard the cat alone is 11 lbs. That's huge on a motorcycle. It will make a real difference in overall performance.

Just went for a first ride and I have to say it really is a beast now. WAY more power than I need for the street. She wheelies on command now pretty much anywhere. I do find myself liking STD mode a lot now that it has the power to not make it seem laggy. I think A or B mode makes sense for smooth roads or the track but I still have a lot to get used to so we will see. It is nice having that option. The bike does seem to be running cooler all around and even when I hit some traffic it never got above 200 so the fan is doing its job. Decel feels so smooth now and does not interrupt my riding at all especially noticeable going through the twisties downhill. I ran it to redline a few times and the pull is so linear now and it just rips well above 100mph so fast that my brain struggles to keep up on the backroads. The other biggest thing to note is there is NO stutter pulling away from a red light. Smooth is pretty much my go to word describing every character of the bike now. Also I am addicted to the sound the Hindle is producing lol. Two thumbs WAY up guys!!

I don't think I have a fair fuel consumption review to give as all I did today was flog it everywhere haha. Currently I am around 30mpg compared to 35mpg normally. Starting tomorrow I will be back to my normal riding for the most part to get an idea on consumption for a tank or two...if I can resist the Wheelies. Well baby Wheelies, I still need to learn to commit.

I am looking forward to doing this myself, after I add a link pipe and slip on.
I don't use B mode, due to to being too touchy and abrupt on bumpy backroads. I am used to bikes that are very smooth on the throttle, and I want this one to be that way as well.
I have worked with Nels on 2 of my other bikes, he is very knowledgeable, and an absolute professional.

Hey gord, excellent write-up and great pics! That exhaust is sweet. I'm hoping to get my 10 flash tuned by 2WDW as well. So...I'm seriously missing the PNW right now. Was stationed there for a few years but got sent here to the east coast last summer. Loved it out there. So jealous!
