Going to Tail of the Dragon this summer with my father (2004 BMW R1150R) and I'm bringing the 10. We'll probably be there a few days and I'm just curious as to what suggestions of other roads around there we should check out. This the first time that both of us will be up there and we're wanting to take in all that we can! Thanks! Mad

I enjoyed it so much more than the dragon -- makes me wonder why deals gap gets all the hype. You can spend hours running the dragon if you want to, but there are good roads all around there. tailofthedragonmaps.com/tail-of-the-dragon-loop/ you can run the dragon, then take TN roads to vonore and cut back towards cherohala. You will run into lots of friendly riders and locals while you are down there and they'll give you quality tips. That's how I heard of this loop because I went down intending to just do the dragon.

I’ve heard a lot about that place so I will definitely have to plan that in now. I’m hoping to run across some other fun roads that aren’t as known and I’ll have to post them here and share the experience and let others know! Thanks

I'm curious if you had any issues with fuel stops up there. Some places are pretty far apart.

+1 on Cherohala Skyway. Time it so you can hit it first thing in the morning.
If you've got a few days, ride all over that side of NC. NC 209 (The Rattler) is good and not as popular/crowded. Look up Little Switzerland. The roads around it are great, especially if you like tight corners.
On my last trip there I made a huge loop that went to Tellico Plains on the west side and hit all the good roads between there and Boone NC.
Grandfather Mountain is worth a stop! Hit this up first thing in the AM too...the line of vehicles to get in gets backed up a short while after it opens.
There are so many waterfalls in this area and many are right next to the road. You can get a tourist guide that shows you their locations so you can wrap those into your route.
Keep an eye out for cops on the TN side, especially in the small towns. I don't have much of anything good to say about that state.

I'm curious if you had any issues with fuel stops up there. Some places are pretty far apart. I had one nervous moment on the brp after trying to go too far between stops and I had the reserve light blinking for 10 miles. Started clinching up a bit. Generally you can find a station within no more than 20-30 miles so you just have to be aware of where the tank is and the next few stations. If you pick up an official map of the BRP they list exits with nearby stations. Most towns that are more than an intersection have gas stations and Google maps will give you a good idea of fuel points and triangulates your location even when you're out of LTE coverage zones. I also second going to Little Switzerland. I ran a few of their side roads and they're also excellent. Asheville is a good base point for a day trip that way.

I love that little restaurant at the corner in Little Switzerland. They have really good food. And the road just past is awesome. I'm heading up there the weekend after next and can't wait!
