Hey guys,
Any idea what size oil filter wrench I need for the OEM oil filter? I demolished the old one removing so I can size it up. Yamaha definitely had that thing from the factory tighter then 12 ft-lbs as my normal filter pliers wouldn't remove it.
So figured I'll get a wrench for my next change. Any idea which one I need?

Anything that advertises itself as working with the "5GH" Yamaha filters. I've never known them to go by sizes so I have no idea what the size is.
So basically search for 5gh yamaha filter wrench and you'll find results. Yamaha makes one but I'm sure you can find an aftermarket brand cheaper.
And yea, every bike I've had the first filter was always on way too tight. Luckily I've been lucky with the screwdriver method but now with K & Ns problems, I think I'm going back to the OEM filter so I'll probably have to buy one myself. Let me know what you end up with .

You can get this style wrench almost anywhere and In my experience its one of the best, even for removing stubborn filters. It will work on a large range of filters as opposed to a single size with a cap wrench. The only bikes I haven't been able to use it on are the R6 (and bikes w/ shared motor) and some Ducatis; both have recessed filters. A cap wrench will slip if the filter is on too tight. I've found the metal ones to grip better than the plastic ones.

The cap filter wrench size is a 'B' for the Yamaha filter. Fortunately my original filter wasn't on too tight and it came right off. I then used the K&N filters with the nut on the end but then they had their QC issue so I went for an OEM filter last time. K&N identified the defective filters and did a recall, I had three K&N's on hand and one of them was in the recall range but K&N shot a replacement out to me and asked me to throw out the bad filter. So next time I'll migrate back to the K&N as they knew the date range for the defective filters and corrected the manufacturing issue. I figure they have too much at stake not to identify and fix a problem like this.

Was a miracle none of us went down. Oil everywhere. The recall was about 3 months after that .
