I’ve had my eye on this for a bit now, seems like the speed triple RS is a hell of a bike. For some reason I wasn’t expecting it to be so one sided.

With a pipe, tune and rear sets on the MT I think the battle would be much closer.....

I think just rearsets and a suspension setup would have the match much closer. The rearsets are one of the main reasons why I have the MT-10, they were just too high for comfort on the Speed Triple R and i returned it to the dealer within half an hour with a numb leg and sore butt. The MT-10 has done 300+ miles in a day with minimal discomfort.

Thanks for the report. I always look at comparisons like this with a jaundiced eye. It does look like the Triumph has the drop on the Yamaha performance wise, does it mean much for on street use, probably not. And the British press always has a bias for European, and especially UK (Triumph!), machinery. In my case my long time Yamaha dealer is 24 miles away on rural roads, the closest Triumph dealer is 70 miles away in the big city. Yamaha wins by a mile for me. Everyone's situation is different.

Must be a huge step up for Triumph, I had the 2016R model and was greatly disappointed, it felt no faster than my 05 Speedy so I flicked it for my SP.

SP will demolish the 16 model, can't see this RS being that much quicker.

The new RS has a newly updated engine design (105 changes from previous models), RPM increase - i've never had experience on a speed triple but seems to me you can't really compare the older model to this new one

The 2016 had 104 engine changes from the previous model, me thinks this was more for Euro4 than performance. Kudo's to Triumph for upping their game, I have had 4 Speedy's and loved them all, Triumph just got left way behind in the naked power stakes, my 16 was beautifully screwed together, the fit and finish was second to none, just needed more power.

Put them on the same tires, and the MT-10 will be faster. The lap times have nothing to do with the hardware.
