Hey guys, I just joined the forum and have been poking through posts. My sole bike for the past 8ish years has been a 2006 R1 and I love how much fun to ride it is. But I've been looking for awhile for something else. Trying to find something that is 'close' to that much power but more comfortable for daily riding and touring. While I'm proud of my R1 Ironbutt, I don't ever want to do that again. On paper the FZ 10 looks great and the reviews are great, but I haven't found anything from a supersport rider talking about how it felt on the FZ10 - can anybody share your experience on the switch?
My only experience on a naked bike was a GSXR-S1000 at a demo ride a couple of years ago. I came away being really underwhelmed on the torque. But that could have been because a)I have no idea what engine setting it was on if they even do that and b) being in a demo ride pack - not much you can do.
So again, in short, anybody coming from a supersport want to share your comparisons and feedback to the FZ/MT 10?
Thanks for the info!

I have always had sport bikes and am now sold on naked ones. I have also had every gen R1 and mostly stuck with hayabusas. Ended up with an FZ09 in the garage and found myself riding it more than anything else. Within the next year or so no more super sport and added the FZ10. I can tell you it's not a sport bike for sure and doesn't rev top end like one either. But it's a worthy transition. Easy to ride and more comfy for sure. Another bonus is not removing the fairing for oil changes etc. I am sure you know this but the gas mileage is not good. And I mean not good as in comes up short in my opinion by about 30 miles. Doesn't sound like much but it is to me. Overall super happy I have jumped ship to the perfect hybrid of sport and comfort. Just mention the gas mileage due to your mention of touring. Not sure my comments help in any way but if you are already considering the swap you shouldn't be disappointed if you do it.

Thanks for your take on it - sounds like I should be pleased if (when) I pull the trigger. As for the gas milage, it is a bummer but I'm going in eyes open. Likely not much worse than my R1 - on that if I get 150ish miles between stops I consider that an achievement. Sounds like this bike is somewhere around 130ish.

Likely not much worse than my R1 - on that if I get 150ish miles between stops I consider that an achievement. Sounds like this bike is somewhere around 130ish. Not that i'm coming from an R1 but I did come from an R6. I loved my R6 but being a bigger framed guy was just hard to ride for long periods of time without my back tightening up. Even riding to work for 40 minutes was tough. So I decided to make the switch to the FZ-10. If you are looking for comfort and power you will not be disappointed. I can't comment on how it will feel getting off an R1 but this thing is no slouch. As rs said, the gas mileage does kind of blow, I would get close to 130-150 on fillup with the R6, then around 115-120 IIRC when I got it flashed (this was mileage until the gas light came on). I can barely get over the 100 mile marker without the low fuel light blinking at me on the FZ-10. You can probably push it to 120+ but i'd assume you would be putting around on fumes at that point. I don't drive the bike hard and use it for commuting so I guess your results may vary. I was very hesitant on getting a flash but I did because of the lovely throttle twitch Yamaha just seems to negate on every bike (was noticeable a lot too on my R6). I'm hoping my gas mileage doesn't suffer that much more from the flash. Gas mileage aside, the bike is so much fun to ride, so comfortable, and has plenty of power. I think you will be extremely happy with the switch.

I've been riding for too many years to count, and I've always ridden sport bikes. Two years ago I decided to get something more age appropriate, and sold my CBR1000RR, and bought a Goldwing F6B. To say that was a big mistake is the understatement of the decade!! Not that the F6B was a bad bike. But, after riding 1000cc sportbikes for over 20 years I just didn't feel comfortable with my feet in front of me, and the lack of power I was accustomed to. So I had no choice but to take a loss, and find a new bike (after only 10 months, and 2500 miles).
So I started to do some research, and saw the emergence of this super naked category of bikes. I was attracted to this type of bike mainly for the seating position, and power. Initially I was planning on buying a KTM Superduke. But, as I started doing more research I came across this new bike from Yamaha called the FZ-10. Once I rode this beast I was sold. Dollar for dollar this is the best bang for your buck! Period!! If your coming off of a sportbike you will not be disappointed. The only thing that your losing is top-end speed. But, you'll be gaining massive low-end torque. For me that was a trade-off I could live with. Besides, how often are you hitting 187mph.
The only issue that I've found with this bike is the fuel mileage (34mpg). At least it has a fuel gauge not just a light. As far as the mods go...the sky (and your wallet) is the limit. I'm addicted to adding accessories to this bike. And, there are plenty out there. Bottom line, If your coming off of a crotch rocket you won't be disappointed (IMO).

I currently have two motorcycles, a 2013 CBR1000RR Repsol and a 2017 Yamaha FZ-10. The Repsol is amazingly fast and a very fun motorcycle, but not that great for commuting to work or touring, that’s why I purchased the FZ-10. It’s a fast bike with a lot of torque, very comfortable, and has great style. I’m also planning on taking a trip to the tail of the dragon, so the FZ-10 will be perfect for that. You will not be disappointed coming from a supersport and going to the FZ-10, if you can’t decide just get both like me haha.

Thanks for all the feedback - and yeah, for at least the time being my R1 isn't going anywhere. The gas is a bummer, but I expect the only time it will really bug me is when I'm touring with my set crew and I'm suddenly the one dictating fuel stops. But a round of beers should take care of that.

Last bike was an 08 R6, which was stolen, and there are aspects that I miss. It was light enough to throw into corners without even thinking, and the tank was obviously engineered to catch your leg. Supersport is more fun when you have frequent breaks or the distance is limited, but it's awful for any extended riding. I do an annual trip from DC to southern WV (and sometimes down through NC) and wearing a backpack on those ventures borders on excruciating in a sport riding position. That's a non-issue on the MT-10. The crossplane is also a massive upgrade both in terms of performance and note.
Mileage is going to be just as bad on the mt-10 as it is on your bike. I went up 2 on the rear sprocket on my r6, so the MT-10 wasn't a big shock for me, but my commute has increased and filling up 2x/week is a PITA.

Great thread @redshirt
I'm a mature rider and the analogy that the FZ/MT 10 is an older mans sports bike rings true to me, I've been riding since the '70's and every bike I have ever owned since my Honda CB 750 has had flat bars. I absolutely unapologetically love my MT10, but having said that I recently bought my first bike where the bars point down, a fully kitted out R6 track bike. I can now see what all the fuss with sports bikes is about. Personally, everything about the MT/FZ10 makes sense and ultimately it rules as a street bike, the upright riding position, the gearing, the low down torque, it's the ultimate street predator. However having ridden both the the MT 10 and R6 on the track I can honestly say that sports bikes can't be beaten for track use, after all, everything about a sports bike are ergonomically designed for racing.

I finally made it to the dealer and threw my leg over the 2017, and I'm sold. They won't do a test ride and being in MN - my first demo ride chance is June - but I think I'm just going to jump in. Now to decide if I really want the black for a discount or wait for 2018 with the quickshifter stock... Probably wait a few weeks for Spring to show up in full and see if they have the 2017 still laying around.
