Hello everyone. Longtime biker and owned many and all brands-HONDA, SUZUKI, KAWASAKI, YAMAHA and HARLEY-ranging from GIXXERS to VRODS to ROAD KINGS. I have been looking over threads on this forum for the better part of the last 6 months. I live in Minnesota and went to my dealer in January and put down $500 for the upcoming CB1000R. Meanwhile, my backup plan was the FZ10. I have been monitoring the pricing speculation on the '18 CB and it looks like it's going to be over $13000 in the USA, which I'm not willing to spend. My dealer has a 17 FZ10 in Black with the red, which is my favorite color. In your opinions, should I wait 4 months for the CB, get the 17 FZ for $11,400 or order an 18 MT10 with the updates for $12499? I know this is a Yammi forum, but would still appreciate some honest feedback. Thank you very much

I haven't exactly researched into much of what changed from 17-18 so I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I'm aware, there's not many changes besides cosmetic.
I always try to find older models to get discounts especially when there's not much difference between model years, so if it were me, I'd go for the 17 FZ10. Look at the extra money you save as money you will likely dump back into the bike for mods. So do you want an FZ10 with your mods for the price of what you would buy an MT10 for?
But it's your decision! Good luck with it and welcome to the forum. Feel free to create your own gallery or build thread when you commit!

I think we’ve determined that differences between the 2017 FZ-10 and 2018 MT-10 are negligible. Aside from the model badge, of course, the 2018 does come standard with the quickshifter rod hardware installed. Or, if it’s important to you, the same Yamaha QS can be purchased online for about $139. Super easy plug-and-play installation, as the 2017 stock ECU is already programmed to work with it. Otherwise, there are evidently some minor changes in the ECU between the two years, but don’t know exactly what. In either case, US models are unfortunately locked down a bit and require a reflash to remove those governed restrictions. I think those are the only changes — oh, and 2018 has a color blue option. I’d definitely buy a 2017 model for $1,100 less!

I can't really comment on the Honda as it isn't available yet. I like the looks ok, but for the money and traditional inline 4 I would probably go with BMW.
I think I have a similar background as you, it's easier to say what I haven't had than what I have.
The engine is really what sold me on the FZ/MT. I bought a leftover 2017 at the end of December for a little less than your numbers above. From what I have read, the 2018 Mt changes are new colors, standard quick shifter, and revised ride modes. I got a quick shifter when I bought mine, no big deal. I was kind of holding out for a blue 2018, but I don't like the amount of black it has, I wish it was the same as the euro model. For $2k off it was hard to pass up on the 2017 for me. If you like the black one, go for it, add a quick shifter and save some bucks.

Besides the colours, the only difference between the 17 and the 18 is the quickshifter, $1100 seems a bit expensive for a quickshifter that takes about 20 minutes to install (that includes the time it takes to go grab a beer in the fridge to enjoy while you install it) and cost about $150.

As others have said, save the money and get the '17 model, use your savings to buy radiator/oil guards, frame sliders, axle sliders, and other necessary stuff to protect your ride. And you'll have money left over for a QS and a few other goodies to personalize your ride.

The decision for me was 2 long test rides on the bikes I was considering. Comparing prices, you get the latest reliable tech from Yamaha and best bang for the buck pricing. IMO Honda lost their innovation leadership years ago. Suzuki still thinks they can sell in the naked class with the old K5 motor. Meh. They still make a good reliable bikes but there’s something missing. They do however make the best mini bike and I love my Grom but the only reason I bought one was because Yamaha doesn’t make one. If you still own your Harley, I will warn you that it won’t be used much. My Road Glide Custom collects dust now that I only use it on long road trips.

I personally would save the money and get the 2017. I don’t think the changes are enough to justify the price. You could also find some great deals on the leftover 2017 models. Someone on the forums recently purchase a 2017 model with zero miles for $10,000. Good luck with the decision!

Thank you to all. To muddy the waters, I am now considering the 18 MT 09. I am seriously doubting my need for anything other than a "around the town, get my two wheel fix, commuter" bike. I've actually ridden a 17 FZ09 so at least I know what I'm in for. Anyways-thanks a bunch for the advice. I appreciate it very much

Totally get it. I was seriously considering the FZ09 as well, along with the 10. That $8999 MSRP is attractive. And, I also thought the same way...850 cc is more than I need, right?!
In the end, I knew that I would regret not getting the big boy bike. A guy at work has an 09. I purposely park next to him to make him jealous. Hahaha. 😈 The 10 is not only a different class machine, but it’s also physically larger than the 09, which is very apparent when they’re sitting side by side.
I know the 09 is a great machine, but.... 😉

I've actually ridden a 17 FZ09 so at least I know what I'm in for. Anyways-thanks a bunch for the advice. I appreciate it very much I test rode the FZ-09 and the FZ-10 back to back. I first went out on the FZ-09 and was very impressed with the power delivery and overall sportiness of the package, then swapped over to the FZ-10 for the ride back to the dealership. No comparison, the FZ-10 was a far more engaging, powerful and overall more satisfying ride, but I could have been very happy on the FZ-09 if I hadn't ridden the FZ-10. If you can afford the extra money the FZ-10 is the way to go, at least in my situation. I'm no boy racer but I can appreciate the extra attitude and power of the FZ-10, and the sound of the cross plane engine is mesmerizing. I bought the FZ-10 on the spot and 15 months into the experience I can say it was the right decision for me. Both are great machines, but there is a reason for the price difference, only you can decide if it is worth it.

I would take the 10 over a 9, but I do want to get a commuter so I'm not filling up twice a week.

So, I stop for fuel on the way home each day because I wouldn’t even be able to make it back to work again in the morning, otherwise. I’ve even considered what it would take to have a 50 gallon fuel tank at home just to make the daily process slightly more convenient. Haha.

I've seen a good number of enviable garages, but now I could really appreciate one with a gas pump.
There are aspects of my r6 that I miss. The light weight and seat position made it a lot of fun on shorter rides. That said, i can't wait to get to west VA and into the Appalachians on the 10.

Hi, one thing to consider is the suspension on the ten is in a different league to the 09 ..... i could not live with the 09 set up, to me it was dire, and i'm in the weight range its built for 185 lb, looked in to the cost of changing the suspension and it made more sense to go with a ten.
after test riding a ten and then getting back on the 09 my mind was made up, i tried to set the 09 suspension, even had a pro set it for me, but the front end just was never right.

I am (and was) in same boat as you on bike history. I owned an 09 both FZ and FJ and loved the FZ. Nothing wrong with it at all but I will say that fit and finish on the 10 is way better. The FZ as you know is a sweet little bike but the 10 is way more solid and just better quality if that makes any sense. In reading your posts I think you answered your own question almost. Your desired color is available in last years model for a price that keeps you happy. I want to see the new honda and maybe will like it more but in another year it to will be reduced price and more reviews and things will be out there. Good luck with what you decide and keep us posted.
